Brexit

What have we gained by Brexit/leaving the EU?

Elephant4 · 29/12/2020 18:39

In simple terms.

I've read so much about what we've lost.

Please no sarcastic comments. I just want to know what we've gained - probably best if those who think Brexit is a positive thing post.

Well there should be more black and brown immigrants, which will please at least one contributor to these threads.

@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst

Terry, how about just listing, broadly, the areas where you expect to see benefits? I'm not going to demand benefits that haven't happened yet (that would be daft, at this point in time), just benefits that we will enjoy later?

I'm not sure what "sovereignty" allows us to do that we couldn't do while in the EU, but I expect you do, so can you outline it for me please?

I already have. But here is a few areas in one link. This is the tip of the iceberg of what changes we could make.

www.businesslive.co.za/bd/world/europe/2020-10-29-yes-there-are-some-benefits-to-brexit/

(I predict there will be comment upon employment in “Red Tape” going up, conveniently ignoring the rest of the article).

@AethelsWhiteGoose

Terry is like the description I read yesterday of the ERG. It doesn’t matter that they ‘won’. They will always be angry at something (Europe) and everything will always be someone else’s fault (Europeans).

They will never be satisfied.

You’re angry.

I’m content. Smile

@TerryHearn

Sabrina. Delusional. Genuinely. You. Are.

The intellect you believe you retain is a feat to behold. You must be part of the 0.00001% that Brexit is supposed to be reserved for. A true genius in a field of thousands of Mumsnetters. Someone capable of understanding every industry, every walk of life and everyone’s point of view. All in the blink of an eye.

Unfortunately none of this is true. What is true is we leave for good tonight. See ya!

Nonsense. Brexit wasn’t just an individual act. It’s an ongoing state. And one that is likely to be reversed. The mood of the country is changing. When the SHTF, then it will change even quicker. Global populism is on the wane and soon we shall see this expressed here too especially when the fall out from the pandemic starts to bite and people realise just how tory the current lot actually are.

It’s very funny seeing Brexiters saying we've left for good and it’s over. Time to move on, etc. That isn’t going to happen. The battle now has moved to them having to continually demonstrate the benefits of Brexit, because there is nothing to stop a future UK rejoining. Which clearly is what many people now are going to start working towards.

It’ll be one of the major issues in British politics for many years to come. I suspect we will rejoin within the next 10-15 years but in a much weaker position than we had. There is a massive appetite for it despite the current sense of loss. The starting position is that 51% think we were wrong to leave and just 37% still think it was the right decision. Like Chamberlain and Eden, history will not remember BJ well.

sally067 · 31/12/2020 17:23

@TerryHearn

Bitter losers.
Doesn't even know what has gained out of this except for the equivalent of "my team won".

We’re now in control innit. We may have ceded Northern Ireland. But we can now control our regulations as long as we keep them same as the EU’s but have no say in their implementation. Otherwise we get massive penalties. Sovereignty is great.

Peregrina · 31/12/2020 17:27

Benefits:

The UK will control its fishing waters post-Brexit and British fishing firms will be able to expand their catch.

Whoops. Johnson didn't negotiate too well there.
Other benefits: GM foods - presented with no discussion about whether they are good or not.

US trade: It could also lead to greater variety and cheaper food by opening up the domestic market to US agricultural products.
Our food is already cheap and quite varied. Not everyone thinks that chlorinated chicken is a bonus, and I am pretty sure that the MPs will make sure that it's not served up in their subsidised dining rooms.

ListeningQuietly · 31/12/2020 17:28

Terry
I just read that South African article you just linked

  • increased tolerance of risk by insurers
  • lower transparency rules for IPOs
  • ministers picking which businesses to support
  • lowering the CT take for big business
Not much there for levelling up
TerryHearn · 31/12/2020 17:44

What a pointless “debate” this is.

If you think any politician in this country will stand on a “Re-join the EU” manifesto in the short term then you are seriously deranged. You don’t know how politics works. The Remainers got it wrong with the referendum. They got it wrong again during the initial 2 years of wrangling, They then got it wrong again at the 2019 election. How many of those MPs that stood for remain on the Tory let alone Labour side lost their seats....

Until you start to show a willingness to learn from your mistakes you will continue to make more of them. Once Starmer is out who is the next Labour Leader? An embarrassment of riches there. Haha. Lib Dems? Nope. Nowt there too. As bad as you think the Tories are a glove hasn’t been landed on them. To rejoin the EU you need Labour back in power for probably 3 terms. With a stonking great majority to pass a new Referendum. Likely? Nah.

It is true that not all remainers have the stomach currently for endless more division but make no mistake the rejoin campaign is just beginning. There are many who will be annoyed that they don't have the same freedoms as those who have a EU passport and that British kids will not grow up with the same benefits to live, love, learn, work or retire in the sunshine or ski resorts of Europe or even to live in the wonderful cultural cities like Paris, Rome, Berlin, Stockholm or Seville.....its a life limiting deal like no other.

Those same British kids will no doubt feel the same and by the time of the next rejoin referendum over 10 years will have passed since the great lie of 2016 and another generation of little Englanders who stole their grandkids futures will have shuffled off this mortal coil (with their heads bowed in shame, along with many of those who lied to them....the cunits). Racism and stupidity will have been exposed for what it is - economically and socially ruinous. We will be in a post pandemic world which will be increasingly smaller.

The pressure points (i.e.follow the money) have yet to be felt and I suspect we will initially follow the Norway and Switzerland example to get equivalence for our major sectors.

In the UK this is services which comprises atleast 35% of our £2.8 trillion economy and market forces will demand equivalence as they bleed business to Dublin, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, etc but the EU will be in no rush to grant this unless of course we pay handsomely - my guess is this will be more than £8.5 billion net contributions pa we were originally paying as full members i.e. costs less than 1% of the GDP of our services sector alone. The maths is compelling and the rationale of business will have a life of their own.

Be sure of one thing though, we will be rejoining be that in name only or as full members. It will not be the deal we had before but there will be enormous benefits which will slowly become apparent.

SabrinaThwaite · 31/12/2020 18:20

The maths is compelling

To the numerate at least.

Whythesadface · 31/12/2020 19:12

Europe is a group of countries, not a country, they are heading into trouble.
I really do think it will be their budget that bites them in the bum.

Another Remainer thread, no different from the thousands that have gone before. It's the last one I'm ever going to read on here.

This is how I shall remember you, no doubt singing a dirge.

Tonight I will be celebrating and wish you all a very Happy New Year.

Depends which 'this country' you are talking about there, Terry. England? - I would doubt it. Scotland? - almost certainly - because, if you hadn't already noticed, the UK is not a 'Country'. It is a political union. And it is coming apart at the seams (at last!).

TerryHearn · 31/12/2020 20:13

Huh? Ground control to Major Remainer? I am referring to England. Yes. Scotland stood on Remain at the last election. They can stand again. It makes no difference. Like it did last time. If they want independence they can have it. Forge their own way. Good luck to them.

So do tell, what good stuff is happening on those sunny Brexit uplands to make your life so much better than it has been up till now? That seems to be a closely-guarded secret no Brexiter is willing to share. Bit unkind to your fellow-citizens, aren't you?
Whythesadface · 31/12/2020 20:28

Oh I know how to win lottery 100%.

You just need to get enought tickets to ensure you cover every number....
