Brexit

What have we gained by Brexit/leaving the EU?

In simple terms.

I've read so much about what we've lost.

Please no sarcastic comments. I just want to know what we've gained - probably best if those who think Brexit is a positive thing post.

Karmanomore - Tesco does not employ people on zero hour contracts. I doubt Aldi does either, at my local Aldi the staff I chat to are usually on 10 hour shifts.

Whythesadface · 31/12/2020 14:04

Still the demand for answers!
Do you think we are the government?
You will just have to wait and see like everyone else Peregrina as your just one of 60 Million.

TheSandman · 31/12/2020 14:27

@HeyHeyImABeLeaver

It's a plan. Not a done thing

Wow, what a bunch of negative Noras! Sucks to be you guys.

Reality.

It's the place where most of us live as opposed to some wishlist lala land.

TerryHearn · 31/12/2020 14:34

Sabrina. Delusional. Genuinely. You. Are.

The intellect you believe you retain is a feat to behold. You must be part of the 0.00001% that Brexit is supposed to be reserved for. A true genius in a field of thousands of Mumsnetters. Someone capable of understanding every industry, every walk of life and everyone’s point of view. All in the blink of an eye.

Unfortunately none of this is true. What is true is we leave for good tonight. See ya!

DemolitionBarbie · 31/12/2020 14:37

We're slowly gaining a more realistic understanding of our diminished place in the world.

Peregrina · 31/12/2020 14:38

Do you think we are the government?

Now this is a good comment. The Government don't think they are responsible for food security - that is the job of the supermarkets. The other day they said they didn't need to see any necessity for supporting Britons who got into trouble abroad, even those wrongfully arrested by hostile regimes.

So quite honestly, since the Government seems to think it doesn't have any responsibility for looking after the people of this country, your ideas are as good as anyone's because that's all you are getting.

j712adrian · 31/12/2020 14:39

This conversation anywhere always leads to the same place - a total lack of any benefit at all.

And a jumble of dissimulation.

Perhaps not directly, but they do use agency staff who will be.

Aldi et al use a hell of lot more staff than what you see in your local store.

We did some IT work for Lidl, the pressures they are under (pre Cv) is unbelievable, no way would i want to work in this sector, very long hours, crap hourly rate, huge pressure to hit targets.

jasjas1973 · 31/12/2020 14:56

Terry
Your posts are just a long string of insults to anyone who has a different opinion to yours.

Sure we are leaving, that has been known for 4.5 years, what you and others cannot do, is name a single benefit of Brexit, not one!

It upset you. A fact of Brexit.

It really is very boring dealing with people like you who don’t want to see anything they disagree with. We haven’t even left the transition period yet and your demanding is like a toddler having a tantrum. The partner we are divorcing has tried to wreck us over the settlement. It will take time to move on and real benefits. But we will. What don’t you understand about that? We are getting ourself out of the most enormous tangle 47 years in the making. Do you seriously think that is a simple task? Particularly when the other side doesn’t want us to leave. Grow up and get real!

Figmentofmyimagination · 31/12/2020 15:11

Getting real.

Some other viewpoints here, especially for you to enjoy Terry. I guess they are all delusional too. Or maybe you really have managed to persuade yourself that “they” tried to “wreck us over the settlement”.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 31/12/2020 15:13

Terry, how about just listing, broadly, the areas where you expect to see benefits? I'm not going to demand benefits that haven't happened yet (that would be daft, at this point in time), just benefits that we will enjoy later?

I'm not sure what "sovereignty" allows us to do that we couldn't do while in the EU, but I expect you do, so can you outline it for me please?

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 31/12/2020 15:23

Terry

Grow up and get real!

‘Grow up and get real?’ ‘See Ya?’

WTF 😂

Cohenlover · 31/12/2020 15:40

"See ya!
Grow up and get real!"

I think you need to do that Terry instead of hurling insults at people.

SabrinaThwaite · 31/12/2020 15:43

Let’s just say that I have lots of experience working in interesting industries and doing start ups in various countries with all that entails. I also know plenty of similar people and, well you know, we discuss things,

Something you might aspire to one day eh?

jasjas1973 · 31/12/2020 15:45

As i said TerryHearn just a stream of insults.......

If you and others actually came up with the benefits of leaving, then we could argue the points and you could win me over?

But you can't, hiding behind false equivalence like its a "divorce, nasty EU screwing us over" so you come out with "Grow up, get real"

Peregrina · 31/12/2020 15:56

The partner we are divorcing has tried to wreck us over the settlement.

Or otherwise, the man you put your faith in turned out to be a lousy negotiator. But when you spend your time insulting people, you shouldn't really expect them to be nice and friendly and meet you 90% of the way. I believe his ex-wife took him to the cleaners too, after his shitty treatment of her.

TerryHearn · 31/12/2020 16:12

This seems to be a pretty fair analysis of why the UK got 'screwed' as Terry would have it. It's by Jonathan Powell who was Downing Street chief of staff and chief British negotiator in Northern Ireland from 1997-2007. His argument is the UK didn't get 'screwed'. The UK from the start of the negotiations (which it initiated by invoking article 50) was totally unprepared. It went in to them not knowing what it wanted, why it wanted it, or how to go about making sure it got whatever it was.

The article starts:
"I have spent the last 40 years involved in international negotiations of one sort or another, and I have never seen a British government perform worse than they did in the four years of negotiations that concluded with the Christmas Eve Brexit agreement."

Peregrina · 31/12/2020 16:33

Jonathan Powell served under Tony Blair, so of course, his opinion is worthless. Only True Believers have opinions which count.

Except that Powell was in office at the time of the Good Friday Agreement, the signing of which is a much more powerful statement to his abilities than the shabby deal that the Johnson cronies have served up.

You buying?
Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 31/12/2020 16:47

@TerryHearn

Bitter losers.
You have yet to tell us one single thing the country has gained by leaving the EU. It really shouldn't be so hard if you are such a winner.
AethelsWhiteGoose · 31/12/2020 16:59

Terry is like the description I read yesterday of the ERG. It doesn’t matter that they ‘won’. They will always be angry at something (Europe) and everything will always be someone else’s fault (Europeans).

They will never be satisfied.
