The Silence is Deafening

For the last however long, I have read threads and posts by Remainers stating confidently that the Prime Minister wanted a No Deal, would get a No Deal. Here are just a few quotes. Some Remainers may recognise their own predictions:

'He is going to give us No Deal and then fuck off into the sunset with millons in bungs from his crooked mates,'

'I'm pretty certain on no deal...'

'I fully expect a No Deal Brexit.'

'Bojo will 'deliver' no deal and then F off into the sunset'

'Boris Johnson and your disingenuous divs - How dare you try and spin a NoDeal'

'He was elected to not get a deal and to make his supporters feel good about the fact the had stuck it to the man (or something).'

There are lots more if you want them.

Now he has obtained a deal, where are all the threads by remainers? Do any have the the guts to hold up their hand up and say 'I was wrong'?

God op surely you have something better to do on Christmas day!
I didn't hear anyone saying what you claim. I did hear Boris saying it would be the easiest deal in history then last week said no deal was the most likely outcome. This was from the man's mouth himself so you're obviously being an idiot.

Goamd pull a cracker or something!

JamSarnie · 25/12/2020 12:24

I am a remainder but never wanted a no deal and am glad we got a deal.

I also recognised that once the decision to leave was made then we needed to leave rather than keep having a vote as that wouldn't have solved anything.

Not sure I recognise your claims as most remainders I know felt the same that we just needed to get on with leaving as soon as possible.

Neptunesgiraffe · 25/12/2020 12:24

As it's Christmas (and the news only came yesterday) I think most people have been too busy. Isnt it a massive document? I skimmed the newspapers last night but there didn't seem to be much info about the specifics. Tbh I'm only on MN now because I'm cooking and I've got 2 minutes to myself.

Barbie222 · 25/12/2020 12:28

I voted remain. Very glad we have this deal rather than nothing. However, not even the most ardent Brexiter can pretend it's anything like as good as the conditions we had under EU membership, and won't be for decades.

praepondero · 25/12/2020 12:29

OP, it's Christmas. Is there really a need to start picking to bits old threads, what would it achieve? 'I told you so?' I suppose.
The document that sets out the deal is apparently 2000 pages long and until the fine detail, nah, any verified detail, emerges, no-one will know how good it is to the UK.
I'm terribly glad there is a deal though, being a Remoaner and all that.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 25/12/2020 12:30

It's Christmas.

I thought this was going to be about spending the day without a huge family gathering.

I wouldn't have opened a bloody brexit thread.

This. Your a fucking fool op if you think this 'deal' is going to better than what we had before. I'm glad there's a deal - I live in Kent, near where all the poor lorry drivers have been stuck in their lorries - no deal would have lead to food shortages and chaos. I'm glad Boris finally caved in and agreed to a deal so maybe the lorry drivers sacrificing their family Christmases to deliver us goods/food/meds was a good thing in the end.

Please say you haven't spent your Christmas combing old posts for these direct quotations

So - in plain English OP - What has Britain gained that it didn't have before?

Chloemol · 25/12/2020 12:43

@praepondero

Why not Remainers have been downright nasty on here for months

ZaraW · 25/12/2020 12:44

YABU he's got a good deal but is it a good deal for the UK?

ZaraW · 25/12/2020 12:44

Should be he's got a deal not a good deal.

FortunesFavour · 25/12/2020 12:48

I think the OP has a fair point considering some of the bile thrown by Remainers on these boards in recent months.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 25/12/2020 12:48

I'll put my hand up. I already offered to eat my hat, on another thread. Happy?

I've seen a pdf outlining all the disbenefits, ie what we've retained (not much), what we've lost (a lot) and things where it's less clear ("depends on t's & Cs" ).
Just waiting now to see the companion document listing what we've gained from the deal. Anybody got a link?

MaryLeeOnHigh · 25/12/2020 12:50

How sad do you have to be to save all those posts up so as to paste them on here?

He told us he had an oven ready deal months ago, a few days before the deadline he comes up with an incredibly half-baked deal that leaves us a lot worse off than when we were full members. Is that really something you want to crow over?

nosswith · 25/12/2020 12:51

I voted Remain.

I long argued that there would be a deal, just didn't know when it would happen. Probably a bad last minute panicky deal, but a deal nevertheless.

I await some more of the details. Preferably followed by Mr Johnson's resignation, so we can get a competent Tory government as the pandemic is not over yet.

mountains76 · 25/12/2020 12:51

If i admit I was wrong about no deal, will the OP admit that this deal is worse then what we originally had?

Whammyyammy · 25/12/2020 12:52

We left the EU nearly a year ago, a deal of sorts has been agreed, it will all be finalised in less than a week. Its Christmas day, let's stop the brexit goading now please

jacks11 · 25/12/2020 12:54

This deal is not a good deal, really. It is better than uncertainty of “we’re still working on it” (wasn’t this going to be the “easiest negotiation in history”?) and the tariffs that would go along with a no deal scenario. It is still not a GOOD deal though. It is certainly not the “oven ready one” Boris wittered on about for ages.

It does not cover services, for instance- a HUGE part of our economy. There are still lots to unpick about this deal. Don’t think it’s going to be as wonderful as some of the brexiteers think. More of a fudge, in my view, to allow both sides to save face.

I think Brexit will be damaging for the UK in many ways. This deal does not change my view in that. Boris is not a hero, he lacks the statesmanship of Churchill, whom he so admires, and conducts himself with all the gravitas and dignity of a boiled turnip. I am ashamed this is the image we are presenting to the world.

Are we going to drop off a cliff into economic oblivion die to Brexit? Probably not, but I think it will diminish us in the longer term. I think Boris’s conduct yesterday was undignified and embarrassing. I’d go as far as to say that the way the Tory party have conducted themselves over this matter (and so many others over recent months) have ensured that I cannot foresee a circumstance in which I could vote for them again- floating voter- as they have disgusted, frustrated, exasperated and angered me in equal measures. I’m ashamed they represent us. I’m not left leaning, BTW. Previously not keen on Scottish independence or SNP particularl (Scottish). Now, I am more open. Though undecided, and recognise serious issues for Scotland if we tried to become independent.

Pukkatea · 25/12/2020 12:58

Oh no, remainers are so mean with their words on the Internet. That's just as bad as dividing the country, ruining the economy, setting UK science back decades and removing the rights of half of its citizens against their will. But the key issue is that remainers said mean things online, that is a complete equivalence.

FoolsAssassin · 25/12/2020 12:58

I thought this was going to be about how quiet the roads are !

All I have to say is that gunning for an argument on Christmas Day of one of the hardest years for most of us in my half century on the planet is extremely weird and in the spirit of Christmas I hope you are OK OP .

OhWhyNot · 25/12/2020 13:03

While I am sure vast majority wanted some sort of deal their is no doubt some wanted to rage about a no deal and are disappointed they can’t

Christmas wouldn’t stop them

pusscatsinblankets · 25/12/2020 13:03

@Crankley what do you want to get out of this thread, exactly? I think people are probably trying to make the most of what is a pretty shitty Xmas for most this year, and are relieved that we won't be crashing out next week on WTO rules (or should that be an "Australian" deal, as that wankpuffin BoJo started to call it?).

maddiemookins16mum · 25/12/2020 13:07

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/12/2020 13:07

I'm a die hard remainer, and I fully realise that the deal we have now is worse than what we had and I'm convinced Brexit was a folie, but some threads and posts have been really uncalled for. There were so many of "Hope we get no deal so people suffer" and "We deserve everything we get" and so much idolising of the EU it was ridiculous.

I'm convinced many just wanted their "Told you so" moment.
