The Silence is Deafening

For the last however long, I have read threads and posts by Remainers stating confidently that the Prime Minister wanted a No Deal, would get a No Deal. Here are just a few quotes. Some Remainers may recognise their own predictions:

'He is going to give us No Deal and then fuck off into the sunset with millons in bungs from his crooked mates,'

'I'm pretty certain on no deal...'

'I fully expect a No Deal Brexit.'

'Bojo will 'deliver' no deal and then F off into the sunset'

'Boris Johnson and your disingenuous divs - How dare you try and spin a NoDeal'

'He was elected to not get a deal and to make his supporters feel good about the fact the had stuck it to the man (or something).'

There are lots more if you want them.

Now he has obtained a deal, where are all the threads by remainers? Do any have the the guts to hold up their hand up and say 'I was wrong'?

@baroqueandblue

The silence from OP since that first post is deafening.

Funny that...

Yup.

Goady troll, goady troll,
Goading all the way...

@yellowspanner

I am a leaver and am very happy with this deal. I would have been happy with no deal. We now have control of our borders and a good immigration system Our fisherman and women can get more fish from our coastal waters and we have control of these waters once again. We are a sovereign nation in control of our own laws and don't have to kowtow to the ECJ. We can improve animal welfare.
We could do all of this before. As for fish we sell most of it and don't have the boats currently to fish for more.

You're just trotting out the same old tropes.

baroqueandblue · 25/12/2020 15:44

yellowspanner really? you trust that nasty shower in westminster to give a shit about animal rights in practice?!

I think the last few days told us all we needed to know about border control...

You don't seem to be aware that any trade deal with any country (including various existing deals we have with non-EU countries) mean we have considerable immigration responsibilities? And as a result, any we make in future to try to compensate for some of what we're losing by leaving the EU will come with heavy immigration demands?

As for the fishing, go Google the figures and read about what it means for UK GDP going forward, compared to what we're losing. You're in for a shock.

But whether you genuinely care or not (something tells me you don't) there are absolutely no real gains for most of us from this deal. Far from it. So stop grabbing at straws, it's sad and it convinces no-one with even half a critical mind.

so fucking sad. who told this idiot these lies? we could do all that anyway.

sally067 · 25/12/2020 15:52

Lets hope we can sell enough fish to make up for the drop in GDP, jobs and tax revenue that will be lost from the financial services industry not having access to passporting and European markets. Do you think this will be possible?

sally067 · 25/12/2020 15:54

We can improve animal welfare.

You think the Tory party and those they represent care about animal welfare? What stopped us setting animal welfare laws before today?

Do you know what?

Its nice to be wrong for once.

I am happy to be.

This isn't a deal I like, but its better than the alternative. And for that I'm grateful.

And if there is one thing I've learnt this year its to be grateful and make the most of things.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/12/2020 16:14

Its nice to be wrong for once.

For once?

What wonderful expression of humility.

akerman · 25/12/2020 16:31

Why should she be humble? She’s not in charge of things. She was just expressing a view on what was likely to happen.

RedToothBrush · 25/12/2020 16:34

Did you have chips for your dinner?

Oh do fuck off.

I'm having a bloody great day. I'm sorry you obviously aren't and feel the need to take a swipe.

It'll be better new year. What with Brexit and all that.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/12/2020 16:38

No I'm fine, thanks.

Sorry to see you aren't.

bellinisurge · 25/12/2020 16:39

Hi [waves to the op] . I never said he wanted No Deal. I said it's where we are going unless Johnson capitulates . Which he has. Turns out a bad deal is better than No Deal.
Enjoy every moment because it's what you wanted.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/12/2020 16:40

Really?

It's nice to be wrong for once. For once?

akerman · 25/12/2020 16:42

I get that the tone is very much not humble! I’m just not sure why she should be humble.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/12/2020 16:47

No one has to be.

Then again, no one likes a gloater.

Mistigri · 25/12/2020 16:48

I still believe he was going for a no deal. I think the stranded trucks this week made that impossible and he caved.

I don't think no deal was the plan. But I certainly think that the way the queues of lorries spiralled quickly into complete paralysis of the roads around Dover, and the way Manston filled up almost overnight, concentrated minds wonderfully. It also gave the govt cover to sell a deal to the people that it cares about (back benchers and newspaper editors).

Just a few days ago there were brexiters on here talking about how 25% of fish fell well short of what they could support - funnily enough the talking points have done a 180 since then Wink

Mistigri · 25/12/2020 16:52

Also, the willy waving is all designed to cover up the fact that this is a deal that the EU could and would have signed a year ago. It gives ground to the EU on trade in goods, on the LPF and on fish, and provides nothing - nada, zilch - to the U.K. on trade in services (which is far more important to the U.K. economy).

nosswith · 25/12/2020 18:26

Cod catches.

EU fisherman in 2019- 47%
EU fisherman in 2026- 43%

Looks like a last minute cave-in to me.

bornatXmastobequiet · 25/12/2020 19:36

Until they disappear through overfishing.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 25/12/2020 19:40

Contrary to the entrenched belief of the more rabid Brexiters, no remainer actually wants a disaster. I would be absolutely delighted if it all proves to be a roaring success. It's just that I'm not optimistic about that.

Mistigri · 25/12/2020 19:40

*EU fisherman in 2019- 47%

This was the issue where the queues on the M20 and at Manston had the biggest impact. The British caved with minimal EU movement, because the covid travel ban poked great holes in British contingency plans for dealing with a standstill at Dover.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 25/12/2020 19:45

We are a sovereign nation in control of our own laws

We've always been a sovereign nation. If anyone voted for Brexit believing that anything would change in that respect, they're doomed to disappointment.

Peregrina · 25/12/2020 19:46

Until they disappear through overfishing.

Now this is where I am a little hopeful - it seemed to be dependent on the British Government rebuilding its fishing industry. Now rebuilding isn't something they have spent much time doing in later years. So I think fishing will actually dwindle but fish stocks will recover, so this will be an unlooked for bonus.

Quartz2208 · 25/12/2020 20:05

I agree with other posters - the situation at Dover and what it meant I think galvanised both sides. Boris Johnson into truly realising what chaos No Deal would cause and the EU also didnt want it

But it isnt about being wrong - it was a genuinely realistic fear I think and the worst possible outcome for all

JacobReesMogadishu · 25/12/2020 20:07

I’m certainly glad there is some form of deal.

Though it appears we are on worse terms than if Brexit wasn’t happening so not sure it’s exactly to be celebrated.
