Only my Mum was Irish. My dad's family were refugees from Eastern Europe.

Otellie · 02/01/2021 17:44

Well you have your Irish passport don't you so no issue for you there.

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 17:45

The decision on the UK as far as NI is concerned has already been taken through a democratic vote - it is separated from GB. The refusal to grant Indyref2 can only go on so long. Obviously, it will be Scotland's decision and they may want to stay. Wales has seen how loyalty gets shafted. Ultimately, it will be up to the Welsh.

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 17:46

Friends and partners @Otellie , that's what your boy calls them. We can still be friends and partners.

TerryHearn · 02/01/2021 17:54

@bellinisurge

Loads of immigration to Ireland from all over the world. There are actually a few racist meatheads there who don't know the meaning of irony. Ireland is becoming a very diverse country and the study of Irish is growing.
That’s what I thought. I wonder if Brexit will mean that EU immigration will ramp up. It may be an unintended consequence.
bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 17:57

Ireland's population was severely depleted in the Famine and with subsequent immigration. It can take it.
As with everywhere in Europe, there are noisy racist meatheads. But that's all part of democracy.

Otellie · 02/01/2021 18:05

It won't be up to Scotland and Wales. Why on earth do you think it would be. If wee Jimmy cranky got her way she'd hold a ref now. But she can't. She can demand all she wants. But it doesn't mean permission will be granted again. Once in a generation opportunity. And probably not even that.

TerryHearn · 02/01/2021 18:05

Yes. Every populace has a load of idiots.

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 18:06

Emigration not immigration Grin. There's even a museum to it

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 18:07

It was once in a generation unless there is a substantial change. Er.....

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 18:19

And the whole "Better Together " campaign was predicated on Scotland's continued membership of the EU via the Union.

Even if Johnson or his successor refuses to grant a referendum , it'll probably be a condition of an electoral alliance with Labour. Who, if they have any sense, will make electoral reform in Westminster part of the deal.
Unless Labour sweep the board and form a majority government. Which is probably the Union's best bet for continued existence. Something to work for, eh?

Aria11 · 02/01/2021 18:30

"Some EU nationals won't want to. And undoubtedly others will take their place"

Otellie, if you are talking about other EU migrants taking their place, this simply won't happen. The level of reputational damage is huge and most people would not contemplate making such a move. In the sector where I am currently working (i.e. higher education), around a third are EU nationals and all my friends and colleagues have plans to leave or have already left. I know of no-one that has suggested otherwise. If you were referring to non-EU migrants, it will depend on the trade agreements concluded by the UK. For instance, India’s government has made it clear that it will be in no rush to reach a trade deal with the UK without significant concessions on movement of people. The ‘hostile environment’ message has been heard loud and clear there as well though and it will be difficult to shake this off, especially given the political climate at the moment and the uncertainty regarding the political union and the economy. I am sure though that all Brexiteers will be satisfied with these developments.

Otellie · 02/01/2021 18:46

Go for it. You'll have a job on your hands there. Lifelong labour voters left for a reason. They're an absolute shambles and completely untrustworthy. It's really labours fault we're in this position in the first place. You can thank the Blair years for that. I doubt I will ever put a cross in the box again for Labour again. Many won't. Especially if Brexit turns out to be successful. And I think there's a bloody good chance it will. And you're assuming if Labour ever got in power again, and things ever got to that stage, that the EU will still be as it is now. I very much suspect it won't be. But that's the whole point of democracy. If you want something badly enough then go and try and achieve it. It's your choice. Maybe you'll be successful, maybe you won't. I don't think for a moment we'll ever be part of the EU again. Not now. But if you think differently then go ahead and try to change it.

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 18:47

We are currently seen as Plague Island because of the UK variant of Covid 19 - yes, I know everyone is getting it. But moving here now, with all the bureaucracy created by Brexit makes it a much bigger deal to upsticks and come here.
It's got to be worth the while of the people we'd like to come here. And when there are so many options that are just as hard to transfer to , why bother?

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 18:49

"If you want something badly enough then go and try and achieve it. It's your choice. Maybe you'll be successful, maybe you won't."
Like, say, independence for Scotland or the reunification of Ireland.
I'm old, I've travelled far and worked all over the world. I agree, it takes gumption . And making it harder puts people off. It just does.

ListeningQuietly · 02/01/2021 18:54

Re the Population of Ireland and Emigration and the like.
Its hard for most Brits to understand the impact of the Famine on Ireland
but this should help : County Leitrim
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_Leitrim
The population in 1861 was nearly 105,000
It is now just over 32,000
at the current rate of growth, it will take 100 years to get back to that peak

Otellie · 02/01/2021 18:55

And making it harder puts people off. It just does.

It depends what it is. A causal bar job, yep probably. A professional highly skilled job, with good opportunities? I doubt people would let a points based system stand in their way.

ListeningQuietly · 02/01/2021 18:58

And those high skilled professionals can choose where in the world they want to work.
They pick the countries with the best options.
At the moment the UK does not provide good options.
It may do once COVID is out of the way
but it may not .....

Aria11 · 02/01/2021 19:04

Those EU migrants that have left so far the UK could have stayed here, provided of course that they had applied succesfully to the EU settlement scheme. Despite this, lots have already left. It would be naive to think that others, especially high-skilled migrants, would actually choose to come to the UK given the additional hurdles they will have to go through now in order to be able to work and live here.

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 19:04

But kids from deprived backgrounds now no longer have the chance to give life and a short term crap job in another country a chance. And who knows what opportunities they'll get if they build up their language skills. A cheap bus ticket or even a cheap plane ticket gets you there. You meet people, you enhance your cv. You grow up.

Noname99 · 02/01/2021 19:14

bellinisurge

I’ve quietly lurked watch you demonstrate your disgusting racist and European imperialism to the max with little comment but really enough now. At the time of referendum, there was a sort of excuse for your ignorance but now there really isn’t. You need to do some reading & educate yourself & THINK about what you are actually advocating here ... in 2020 with all that is known and understood with regards to the impact of European imperialism....you continue to actively and shamelessly advocate for the continuation of it.

And ‘plague island’ .... wow!! I guess you are one of the ‘Chinese virus’ people too? I guess you are Trump supporter too? Advocating for the white Christian majority over the rest of the world?

Noname99 · 02/01/2021 19:21

And please don’t pedal that crap about the working class access to Europe. Please show me a single piece of evidence that shows that British working class got anything out of EU membership.

Even the eu have had to admit that Euramus is basically a middle class freebie ‘gap year.’ Working class freedom of movement has been into the Uk not from it.

White, Christian & Middle class is who the EU is set up for. Those who are working class or a bit too brown (like the Turkish!) well we are excluded.

Otellie · 02/01/2021 19:24

You do realise that many of the people who voted for this were from a deprived background right? Your cheap plane and bus tickets weren't enough to improve their lives and prospects here were they. And many of those people couldn't even afford your cheap ticket and the opportunity to bum around that you were able to experience. People won't miss what they couldn't have in the first place. That was the whole point. I find it utterly bizarre how many people still fail to understand why Brexit happened. I hate to use the term educate yourself, but in this case it's probably apt.

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 19:33

"Please show me a single piece of evidence that shows that British working class got anything out of EU membership. "
I could introduce you to them but you wouldn't like them because they all voted Remain.

Noname99 · 02/01/2021 19:34

otellie

It’s quite incredible isn’t it? White middle class ‘socialists’ lecturing the thick working class and brown/black people who made up a sizable proportion lecturing us on what is good for us ..... again. Because of course they know best
