Dg390 "I think you might find it was a decade of a government of the Tory party"
First Tory Government since Major was in 2015 (2010 if you count the coalition). Brexit was a direct result of Tony Blairs Labour policy, where despite being warned he refused to put transitional limits on immigration when the A8 countries joined the EU and ignored Labour's traditional base.

Anywhoo , 🍷 🥂 on chill! And a meme from Dobby!

RedtreesRedtrees · 31/12/2020 21:23

@XingMing fortunately as your fellow Brexiteer posts: “You can still live, work and travel in the EU. Nationals of other 3rd countries manage to do so successfully. Your option to do so hasn't been removed.”
And you wonder why we despair...

RedtreesRedtrees · 31/12/2020 21:24

@BelleHathor yes we do count the coalition. So that’s 10 years (although it feels like a lifetime).

Diclofenac · 31/12/2020 21:31

Evening all,

Very happy to see the Arms back in business! Hope it will continue and thanks to the various landladies for persevering despite the nastiness.

90 minutes to go 🥂

(Long time lurker de-lurking)

XingMing · 31/12/2020 21:46

Tony Blair's failure to limit migration from the A8 countries brought millions of brave clever people who wanted to escape unemployment at home in those countries. Not totally surprisingly, they found work, settled down and acquired rights. I don't think I have ever read criticism of their motives for coming to the UK here (we all understand self-interest). I have read, frequently, all across MN of people lamenting the difficulty of finding an affordable place to live, or getting an appointment with a GP, or a school place. Brexit was fuelled by a seismic population shift, for which no provision had been made, because everybody underestimated its scale. And the migration wave has restrained earnings for UK citizens, shaken up expectations, but on the plus side it has also helped us care for our increasingly elderly population. I remain in the 4% who really didn't know absolutely what the correct answer was, and I am prepared to admit it. I'm also certain that the argument has been made more divisive than was necessary by people not listening to what others were saying. There's been less people sticking their fingers in their ears to shout louder here than elsewhere. It's been instructive, and thank you everyone who has participated.

Over and out, wishing goodwill on earth, to all.

Bellablahhole · 31/12/2020 21:51

Another Brexiteer popping in to wish you all a very happy New Year.

We really are nearly there.
Thank you to all the Alms people over the last few years. I have enjoyed your company.

bellinisurge · 31/12/2020 22:07

Just to remind you that in less than an hour GB leaves the EU. But Northern Ireland, in effect, doesn't.
Mission accomplished?

XingMing · 31/12/2020 22:12

The pedant in me has to point out that you're not a mathematician @RedtreesRedtrees. 96% of the people who voted did NOT vote remain, or remain would have won. Of the 100% who bothered to vote 52% voted to leave, and 48% to remain. Is that clear enough, dear, or do you need a picture? I (just) voted leave, and I am no xenophobe and resent your churlish slur.

ListeningQuietly · 31/12/2020 22:12

Xinming
Your post at 21:46 was spot on
except that all of the issues you raise could, and should have been dealt with in the intervening

  • Blair was a twat for not restricticing accession in the way everybody else did
  • Blair and Brown were twats for not rolling back Right to Buy and ramping up social housing building while they had the chance
  • Brown was a twat for thinking he'd abolished Boom and Bust
  • Cameron and Osborne were twats for bringing in Austerity
  • Clegg was a twat for enabling them
  • Cameron was a twat for not facing down Farage
BUT None of that lot ever needed Brexit to sort it. The UKs shit politicians are here to stay
Whythesadface · 31/12/2020 22:14

Don't worry Bell, I recon that both parts of the island will soon be totally out of the EU .
Wait till one half sees how much the EU want in fees. . . And without us to say no to things, the fees will rise a lot to cover C19 and other things.

BelleHathor · 31/12/2020 22:17

Excellent points as usual Xing it was never a case of Black or White, rather a number of choices that led down a certain road. I remember friends worrying about getting a school place or even space on the Maternity ward when giving birth back in 2007.

45 minutes. Who knows what the future holds but here's to an interesting 2021!

XingMing · 31/12/2020 22:23

Listening, but nobody listened, and the politicians failed.

So now, we must move on and not keep returning to eat the vomit. We need to do that with good intentions towards the whole population, not just the people who agree with my/our/your politics.

bellinisurge · 31/12/2020 22:24

@Whythesadface would that be based on the 90+% pro-EU membership vote ? Just enjoy the 3/4 of the UK that are out. The rest is going nowhere.

Have also enjoyed your posts on this thread Xing Wine

You've way more patience than I do 😂

Thanks to ALL who have contributed over the past years - it's been an emotional ROLLERCOASTER!

2019 was relentless in its nail biting frustration... but the #AccidentalHeroes served us well in the end 😉

I can't namecheck everyone, there's been so many - but it was great to have this place to band together & weather the storms as a group 😍

Lovely as well to see old faces pop up here for the final hurrah! 🥂 🍾 🍻 Wine

Just over 30 mins to go!! 🙌🙌🙌

@Whythesadface oh god 🤦🏼‍♂️.

Morsmordre · 31/12/2020 22:33

Accidental Heroes 😂 - that was my favourite Pic you created! 🥂

XingMing · 31/12/2020 22:34

Thanks for the Grin RedTrees. You're correct that I am not a mathematician (scraped a 6 on 2nd attempt at O level). But I voted poised on a knife edge. I didn't want to leave the EU after having voted for it on every previous occasion, but I also did not believe a federal Europe of 28 states (and expanding) could cohere. But again, I am not a xenophobe, and I am cross that you took such a cheap shot.

HeyHeyImABeLeaver · 31/12/2020 22:35

Anyone got a copy of the poster? would be good to give it one final outing on here tonight.

ListeningQuietly · 31/12/2020 22:36

Xing
Brexit has happened.
That is a given.
It was on 31st January.
But how can we move on when we have the same shit politicians in post
who made the shit decisions over the last 20 years
and are actively doing so at the moment?

At the decision making level nothing has changed
so why do you expect anything to change ?

FFS Farage got himself and his kids German Passports so they keep free movement
Stanley Johnson is getting a French passport so he stays European
its only the poor who are being, yet again, left behind.

BrandySours · 31/12/2020 22:38

There were so many pics 😂😂

I've deleted most (if not all) I think 😟

I've done a quick one for tonight though 😉😍
