Brexit

To feel so angry that we'll be getting a no deal Brexit now on top of all this shit

Australia deal = no deal effectively. Quite annoyed with the PM smirking though his speech as well. Seemingly uncaring about what he's inflicting on people. I do believe people in 2016 weren't voting for no deal. I know it's happening anyway, but it's a cheek to try to blame the EU for it imo.

He doesn't need to be an expert - he has been employed to schmooze for want of a better word

What like Prince Andrew used to?

I cannot imagine there wasn't a more qualified person for this job than Tony Abbott

Clavinova, you must be the last person standing who thinks...Brexit is going to bring untold wealth to the masses.

I don't but I want Brexit to be a success (preferably with a deal).

Clavinova · 18/10/2020 20:12

What like Prince Andrew used to?

Hopefully not like Prince Andrew.

I cannot imagine there wasn't a more qualified person for this job than Tony Abbott

As far as I can tell - Tony Abbott does have the experience (and the contacts/influence/drive) that qualify him for the role.

Emilyontmoor · 18/10/2020 20:34

Oh dear Clav Come to pastures new to spread your cut and paste? As we discussed elsewhere, the only part that Tony Abbott played in Australia's trade policy and implementation was to use his talent for going into their parliament big and dirty (and right wing and misogynistic) to silence critics who said that the China trade deal had conceded too much, especially in terms of allowing the Chinese to bring their employees to Australia without the safeguard of their famous "points based immigration system" thus threatening Australian jobs. Not a good look that for the Brexiteers if they had bothered to look a bit more closely at his CV Hmm

He was the shortest serving Australian PM since the one in the 60s who waded into the sea and left his clothes on the beach, presumed drowned, and he is clearly a lot less honourable. He was kicked out by his own party after all his bloopers. Since then he has been available to open a fridge if anyone would pay him attention. But dream on that your Brexit project attracts and is piloted by anyone who can organise a piss up in a brewery.

During March 2020, being mindful of the potential crisis in PPE supply facing the NHS and wanting to use its experience and contacts to help, our client’s directors began intensive efforts for building a supply-chain which would be able to procure large quantities of medical-grade PPE from China. In building that supply chain, our client drew upon its Company Director’s established business network in the Far East. Our client also drew upon the Company Director’s personal contacts, including his wife (a veterinary surgeon) and her extended family who are based in China. In circumstances where the difficulties with air travel made it difficult for make visits to China, these family members were able to visit and negotiate directly with factories producing compliant products, in order to secure production space that might fulfil the requirements for PPE supplies including for use in health and social care settings."

Well apart from Litigation lawyers being famously creative do you have any clue how many British citizens in the UK and Asia would be better placed to negotiate a medical supplies deal in China than simply through their wife's contacts?? In fact have a far more effective network of contacts. But thanks for highlighting this because I will put the good law project in touch with them immediately.

Yes, I’d love there to not be hugely detrimental economic and social impact too. Sadly, I lack your faith. We are heading towards 1933.

2017 -
"The nation’s most powerful union leaders have exaggerated an “unlimited” surge of Chinese workers coming into Australia under a free-trade deal, with new figures revealing the flood they predicted has turned into a trickle."

"The union campaign took the free-trade agreement to the brink of defeat in the Senate less than two years ago, amid dire warnings that new visa rules would allow Chinese companies to exploit an “immense loophole” to put Australians out of work."

"But those fears have been debunked by official results showing a 15 per cent fall in the number of new visas granted to skilled foreign workers coming from China in the year after the trade deal took effect."

"the latest data shows the number of 457 visas granted to Chinese applicants fell from 3270 in the year before ChAFTA to 2781 in the first full year after the trade deal."

"Rather than taking jobs from young workers with trade skills, the applicants were overwhelmingly managers and professionals, with only 18 per cent being classified as trades or technical workers."

You don't need to put the Good Law Project in touch - the letter is on their website - that's where I found it.

Mistigri · 18/10/2020 21:16

Abbot is a misogynist, homophobe and climate change denier.

He is such a weird hill to die on. He's not British, he was a useless leader of his own country and he has no trade credentials. I can understand Tories cheerleading for Boris, because for all his faults he's still our prime minister, but cheerleading for the failed prime minister of a country 15,000 kilometres away?

That's just flat out weird.

It will be interesting to see how the matter turns out - either way.

he has no trade credentials

I disagree - that's the one thing he does appear to have.

bp300 · 18/10/2020 21:44

@Clavinova

Antonov 57% to remain 35% to leave 8% would abstain

"Specification for the Survey"

"The survey will be representative of all persons aged 15 and over (no upper age limit) resident within private households in each country, regardless of their nationality, citizenship or language."

Not necessarily entitled to vote in a UK referendum then.

Younger people are more pro EU so the leave vote would likely be much higher than this.

Except they haven’t actually delivered any that meet the spec, have they?
SabrinaThwaite · 18/10/2020 21:51

I’m enjoying the defence of Pestfix.

Did Pestfix also explain why it’s newly appointed MD was appealing for PPE supplies on LinkedIn and why he and all the Directors rapidly deleted their online presence? Or why a company with c£18k of assets was awarded a £108m contract?

And why have the two brothers who own Pestfix recently set up two new holding companies?

JassyRadlett · 18/10/2020 21:52

I disagree - that's the one thing he does appear to have.

‘Bloke who shows up at the end for the photo because he happened to be in the big chair after the years of work have been done’ does not a trade expert make.

Mistaking the role of a senior politician in a trade negotiation with an expert trade advisor is a pretty big error.

Clavinova · 18/10/2020 21:55

I think you mean the remain vote - nothing to stop them voting for the Lib Dems at the end of last year.

Except they haven’t actually delivered any that meet the spec, have they?

I must admit to have lost track of who supplied what - Pestfix were contracted to supply gowns?

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 18/10/2020 22:03

Fuck every single one of you who voted for this

Beautifully put. I second that.

The chink of light for me is that I'm a Scot. I was conflicted about indyref1 in 2014 but I'm not conflicted now.

I'd be happy to build a huge wall and leave the English rats to fight it out in their sack. I do feel sorry for those who didn't vote for this, but I sat and watched the GE in horror as England handed Johnson (or whoever is pulling his strings) the whole of the UK on a plate. Unforgiveable.

SabrinaThwaite · 18/10/2020 22:11

Official government documents stated that the Pestfix contract would encompass the “delivery and supply of urgently needed gloves, gowns and masks”.

But the government has now said this is incorrect, and “rather than a contract for gloves, masks and isolation suits for £108m as indicated, the contract that was concluded with [Pestfix]… was in fact for isolation suits only, with a value of £32m instead.”

However, documents showed that the £108m purchase order issued by the government was made on 10 April — three days before the tender process for the contract was supposed to conclude on 13 April.

www.cityam.com/government-pest-control-firms-108m-ppe-contract-issued-in-error/

And then this is rather odd:

Dan England, the co-founder of the business, told the Times that although the company had not previously sold PPE, he had “very good connections in the supply chain” in the far East and had “tried to help the NHS in their hour of need”.

Perhaps the “broad range of products” Pestfix claimed it had been selling to the NHS for 11 years was more to do with rat bait than PPE?

KenDodd · 18/10/2020 22:11

And unbelievably the Tories are still ahead in the polls.
This is despite the appallingly incompetent response to covid resulting the thousands of deaths.
The corruption and profiteering from covid.
The lies and lies and lies.
The disregard for their own rules when it comes to following them themselves.
This government must be pissing themselves laughing at us. They know they can do ANYTHING and their followers will still flag wave and cheer.

Although quotation marks were not used and your link goes on to say;

"A spokesperson for Pestfix said: “Pestfix is a public health supply SME that has been procuring and supplying PPE—among other items for use in pest control—for more than a decade, to a range of sectors, including many NHS Foundation Trusts.”

chomalungma · 18/10/2020 22:46

It seems to be a massive game of chicken at the moment.

The thing is - ultimately we need the EU more than they need us.

We are hung up on fishing. Which is worth £784 million to the UK economy. About 0.1%.

And state aid.

I hope it's worth it.
