The government have FINALLY started to treat no deal brexit and covid as one entity in terms of fucking the economy.

On the one hand you have one camp who think they can sneak No Deal through as a consequence of Covid. On the other you have people who realise that it might be quite a good idea not to doubly screw your entire economy and to continue to be able to import medical supplies freely.

We now no that No Deal Brexit will involve passports to get into Kent and 7 mile queues of trucks because this has passed the lips of Gove. Y'know one of those who has been denying this for the past 4 years and presenting it as 'scaremongering'.

We are now firmly into the end game where businesses have to make plans based on the government plans and technology. Y'know the ones that aren't complete yet despite it only being 2 months to go.

Johnson has today done an interview about covid restrictions in the NE in which he got all the detail wrong. Its almost as if he forgot the lines he was instructed to recite and have no fundamental understanding of what rules he's putting into place to control the lives of the population.

As we lurch into October, there is speculation of full local lockdowns being brought in to try and deal with the spiralling number of cases which have to be the result, in no small part, of a dire lack of local testing facilities in the North of England. Meanwhile we've got The App finally. The one that doesn't work and the police and many health care staff are being advised not to use cos its so bobbins and will lead to them constantly isolating needlessly. Thats just something the rest of us have to contend with.

The feeling is that Cummings is up for No Deal. Johnson has been brainwashed into it, which lets face it, isn't too hard given how hard of thinking he is. However there is a growing sense that Johnson may now bottle it and declare victory in the jaws of defeat. That might be a premature hope.

We await the answer and the all important question of whether Christmas is indeed cancelled - that is for everyone who hasn't already cancelled it due to financial hardship...

Another day, another fuckup

🐏 but not an ordinary fuckup; this is a goatfuck : 🐏

It's what happens when a government does IT on the cheap
(or alternatively has done it very expensively with another contract to an incompetent crony somewhere along the chain)

22,961 cases yesterday, including more cases mislaid because of a software bug
That follows 12,871 cases including cases missed

Official figures before Saturday were that daily cases were around 7k and levelling off

In reality they have been > 10k since 30 September, approaching 12k by 2 October,
with figures for 3-4 October still to come

==> So cases 70% higher than official figures
and increasing

AND

The missing cases have only just been given to track & trace after up to 2 weeks delay

==> so infected contacts will have been wandering around infecting others
who have been infecting others

🐏 So a goatfuck 🐏

To be fair it was of course the way the UK gov managed the UK quota that allowed it to be bought by foreign operators of supertrawlers.

This Greenpeace article explains incidentally why brexit won't bring recovery to the 'artisan' fisheries - whatever deal is agreed:

Sostenueto · 05/10/2020 09:26

Totally agree BCF

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2020 09:28

There is no track and trace service.

Just an expensive computer system not fit for purpose. They should refuse to pay for it due to breech of contract.

Oh sorry, thats just what they threaten to do when the word EU is involved.

Anyone spot today's fine print?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54412581

Meanwhile, the head of the government's vaccine taskforce, Kate Bingham, has told the Financial Times that less than half of the UK population could be vaccinated against coronavirus.

"There is going to be no vaccination of people under 18," she said. "It's an adult-only vaccine for people over 50, focusing on health workers, care home workers and the vulnerable."

As I said to DH what does that mean for 18 - 49 year olds who want to travel? Will being vaccinated be a travel requirement for many countries because I suspect it will - at least in the near future.

I guess that means that 18 - 49 year olds will probably have to pay to be vaccinated if they wish to go on holiday abroad.

And if the first vaccines are only rolled out in the Spring, getting one privately is liable to be the Autumn at the earliest for most who fall into this category.

I also expect that the vaccine will be freely available to all ages groups in other countries...

After all, selling them to make a quick buck is a damned foolish thing to do when your local economy needs the industry.

It wasn’t so much making a quick buck, it was the failure of the UK to join the EU scrappage scheme back in the 80s, which would have compensated UK boat owners for scrapping their boats and retained the quotas. Instead, skippers were forced to sell their boats which included the licence to fish and the quota share. And it was a UK government decision to attach the quotas to the boats in that way too, as other EU countries manage it differently.

...we’ve been told we’re surrounded by the sea which is a source of fresh fish.

As my late DF would have said 'You're a beggar for finding things out.'

52andblue · 05/10/2020 10:02

I was pondering the news about the vaccine restrictions too @RedToothBrush

I wondered not just about travel but if those who cannot afford to pay for a vaccine in the UK will not be able to demonstrate they are 'safe' for all sorts of other things / movement / choices ? So we create a (nother) two tier / class system in the UK, of our own (dear leaders) doing?

DGRossetti · 05/10/2020 10:04

I know it's totally not the thing, and fortunately unheard of in the West Midlands, but I did like rock salmon in London.

I'm quite happy to try all fish. The main problem with the white fish alternatives to cod is that they are bland as hell - so you'd think the average Brit would wolf them down ...

That said, if you are buying fish these days - particularly fish fingers, breaded fish or prepared fish, you really have to look carefully past the "FISH" bit on the packaging to see what fish it is.

Trivia fact is that until the industrial revolution oysters were peasant food, and salmon was common - so common there's a letter to a bishop in Elizabethan times from some novice monks complaining about having salmon every fucking day (I extrapolate).

Eels anyone ? I know how to build an eel trap from willow and reeds.

YES!!!

If I were Matt Hancock I don't know how I could (walk into the Commons?) 'explain' it later today, I really don't.

Regardless of knowing you knew very little about the process, you introduced the subject as if your comment had a factual basis, or relevance.

Highly topical subject in my opinion and very relevant;

^"They made a bigger mess of it than the UK'"
...
"why has one line of computer code caused such disruption to the Leaving Cert grades?"
"The algorithm which brought together lots of different factors to come up with students’ grades had two errors – but those mistakes have had massive knock-on effects."

www.independent.ie/business/technology/explainer-why-has-one-line-of-computer-code-caused-such-disruption-to-the-leaving-cert-grades-39580586.html

Even before the coding errors were discovered;

"The skies are darkening with the chickens coming home to roost. The High Court cases are the big test of a Leaving Cert which may have seemed two weeks ago to have been a success. In reality, it was always nothing short of a shambles."

www.independent.ie/opinion/comment/leaving-cert-is-a-total-mess-that-could-have-been-easily-avoided-39545227.html

Looks as if you are still chipping in with unasked for advice on a subject about which you know virtually nothing...

I quoted from your link!

A little nuance for you to ponder.

The data in your current link refers to 2013/14 and 2014/15 - do you have anything more up-to-date? I was told yesterday that my quote from August 2020 was too long ago!!

NB I am out for most of the day/evening.

Absolutely.

But it’s always easier to blame the nasty EU.

@Clavinova - Highly topical subject in my opinion and very relevant;

Perhaps you could explain its relevance to the current thread as I'm failing to see its relevance.

Is it a fuck-up? Absolutely. Is it relevant to what's going on in this thread? No, not at all.

Just found this mildly amusing. Perhaps I'll go and see what the Fail etc make of the news.

My Nonna was one of the village bakers. My DF has never got used to brown bread. To this day he can't understand why you'd put back in the stuff they worked so hard to take out.

As for wholewheat pasta ...

A rap on the knuckles for mathanxiety then with her post;

"The Irish Leaving Cert is a nationwide exam offered in several iterations, including the Applied Leaving Cert, a less academic track."

"Universities do not make offers directly to students. The process is almost completely automated, anonymous, and impersonal, handled centrally in the vast majority of courses and cases by the Central Applications Office."

"Students list up to ten courses on their application, grades are sorted according to an order of merit, applicants are slotted into their first choice based on grades, then second, and on down the line until you get an offer, for students applying on the basis of LC results for the year of application. Each student is also assigned a random number and sometimes an offer is made based on random selection of this number if there are several students with equal grades applying for the same course and a limited number of places available on that course. 'Available Places' course applications can be made after offer rounds have closed if a student hasn't received an offer or an offer they like or if they find to their joy that they underestimated the results and applied for courses below the level they could have applied for. This process is more often used by underperforming students."

"In a great many cases, students have a variety of courses/degrees that are similar in scope and value in their list. Nobody is assigned to a degree course for which they have not applied, and it is assumed students have researched all of their listed choices."
"For instance, available courses in the area of Law" -

Although she lives in the US - perhaps she doesn't understand the rules of the game on here.

I have a long drive today!

TheElementsOfMedical · 05/10/2020 11:10

Don't worry, everyone! I can answer the question addressed to C&Pnova on their behalf:

🐿 "The Argentinian lake duck has the largest avian penis, a corkscrew measuring 42.5 cm. This is also the longest penis of any vertebrate in relation to body length; when fully erect it can reach about the same length as the bird itself. Female ducks have a corkscrew vagina which spirals in the opposite direction to the penis, which is thought to allow the females to prevent fertilisation during forced copulation. Therefore, please pay close attention to some really nitpicky tangential details over there 👀👈 which are supposed to convince you that they are relevant to ToryBrexitannianNationalPlague being really Great!" 🐿
