Today is the last scheduled day for talks with the EU.

We have til 30th June to ask for a transition extension. We won't.

That leaves us starring down the barrel of a no deal exit, when we still could be in a covid-19 crisis and the US may be in turmoil given recent events and the coming election...

It's not a pretty picture.

Adventures in Arithmatic with Matt Hancock

An 'R' of greater than one is 'near one.'

Makes you feel sorry for the poor sods recovering from covid who get Hancock's donated antibodies. A grillion little Mattys swimming around your system. Ick!

Tanith · 05/06/2020 17:30

I agree with prettybird. Certainly it seems to be experience of the Leavers I know, and they bitterly regret voting for Leave.

DGRossetti · 05/06/2020 17:33

Because I was a naive twit. I've never been much into politics, in fact since this shit show started I have learned so very much more. I had just been diagnosed with Hashi's, literally the same month as the Referendum, and was pretty focused on the NHS being improved with more funding (insert hollow laugh here, 4 years later).

Thank you.

There's something deeply depressing about the low level of political engagement in the UK (or maybe I should limit that to England). Starting with a lack of lessons about the very constitution of the UK. (Compare with US requirement to memorise their constitution ...). However the flip side is that there should be less room for indoctrination.

If you are referring to me as that, you can fuck right off.

Can I respectfully suggest you (re) direct your anger at that not at yoikes but at the people that sold you the lie. They are the villains. You, yoikes and I are all the victims. As well as our children and their children.

I grew up in Australia and was educated there, didn't come to the UK till I was 23 so haven't had the same background as most of you wrt schooling.

Sorry to lose my rag, it's being called a racist that I simply won't stomach. I am angry at the people who sold me the lie but I am also angry at people who have been abusive to others (no matter which side of the vote they were on, or not at all as not everyone voted) with awful name-calling and insults. Totally unnecessary.

Have we seen what lovely Oakeshott, Tice and a Tory MP have been up to?

It' inevitable when people see something which they regard as stealing advantages from their children. You need to remember that (for example) Farages kids are all EU citizens - they aren't losing a thing.

If it's any consolation, then given that Brexit was all about unicorns, you are pretty much a unicorn yourself. A Leaver who does realise they were conned (because all Leavers were). Who is not only willing (and brave Sad) enough to admit it, but who can also articulate their reasons for voting leave beyond the mindless mantras that end up going in a circle forever.

We need more people like you.

yoikes · 05/06/2020 17:45

So you were ill and you're not UK born. Both of those things apply to me too.

Why do either of those things stop you exercising a little critical thought?

Didn't you pause - even once - when Farage at al were spouting their vile filth?? Not at all? When Jo Cox (RIP) was assassinated?
Not then?

Coz - honestly - you call me what you like! Seriously. I've heard it all! Been told to "fuck off out of this country" for good measure too.

And - really - what more harm could you and people like you possibly do to me and my kids that you havent already done with your vote?

DGRossetti · 05/06/2020 17:49

As I said years ago. This is the new civil war (or continuing the last one). Divisions will last generations. All we can do is try and focus the energy of anger in the right direction. Otherwise it's just the equivalent of the Dresden firebombing. Cruel. Unnecessary. And totally ineffective.

Oops.

I wonder if there will be a resignation?

Sorry. Stupid question.

yoikes · 05/06/2020 17:52

The pandering to regretful (and not so regretful) leavers on this thread makes me feel a bit queasy at times tbh.

I get it. "We" all need to move on etc etc. A new Albion. "We" need to BeLeave etc etc.

Except I can't do any of those things ^

And never will. Hey ho.

CrunchyCarrot · 05/06/2020 17:56

So you were ill and you're not UK born. Both of those things apply to me too.

I am ill still and I was born in the UK. I went to Australia at a few months old.

Why do either of those things stop you exercising a little critical thought?

You're not a naturally understanding person, are you. I'm not interested in calling you names. What for? What will it achieve? What does calling me names achieve? I am a typical human being - flawed and stupid at times. I make bad decisions at times. I do things that don't always make sense. I am not going to engage with you further, because I don't think you and I can have a constructive conversation.

DGRossetti · 05/06/2020 17:58

The pandering to regretful (and not so regretful) leavers on this thread makes me feel a bit queasy at times tbh.

I'm not pandering. Not has time dimmed my anger. But it's Hamlet isn't it. You either do something. Or you don't. And I don't count just being angry without trying to change anything as doing.

Yes I am as sceptical and cynical as they come. But life can be full of surprises, and some of them can be pleasant. If I really thought there was no chance tomorrow might be better than today, then I can assure you I wouldn't be here. I would have met my maker - whoever they are - a long time ago.

yoikes · 05/06/2020 17:59

Agreed.
You want a pat on the head for admitting you made a terrible mistake. One which will blight a generation (if we are lucky)
I'm not going to do that.
Bit others here will so enjoy.

yoikes · 05/06/2020 18:01

I guess my work makes me more aware of what's happening behind the Brexit fuckscape.

And makes me angry.

Coz it's gonna be bad, folks. Buckle up.

MagisCapulus · 05/06/2020 18:11

yoikes · 05/06/2020 18:19

I'll make a few predictions before I tootle off:

  1. The situation in the US will have far ranging consequences for the UK that aren't Brexit related. Have no doubt that TR and his EDL chums are already plotting how they can turn the febrile race situation in the US to their advantage here.
  1. The covid-19 deaths will continue in the UK at a rate we seem to have decided is acceptable.
  1. Life isnt going to be back to normal this year and those that act like it is will are deluded.
  1. Once January 1st comes around and the like of JRM, JR etc have shorted the £ and made their billions (which has always been the point of brexit btw) they will retreat into the ether.
  1. BJ will resign. He will plead ill health I imagine. The Govt will fall apart. Labour will be asked to form a GNU or there will be a GE.
  1. There will be food shortages, fuel shortages and people will die.
  1. Massive unemployment.
  1. Negative Interest rates. Obv this will be good for some
  1. Massive increase in MH issues, missed cancer dx and deaths from strokes, MIs etc. We may never know the true number of deaths.
  1. We could start 2021 under martial law thanks to the CCA.

  2. The GOP and Trump administration will do ANYTHING to stay in the Oval office....watch this space.

I realise none of you want to hear this (or agree) and I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

Good luck all x

thecatfromjapan · 05/06/2020 18:26

Yes. I think things are going to be very grim in the U.K.

I still can't deal with how bitter I feel about all this. And the people who brought it about and those who enabled it. It's still too much and I'm too angry.

I just wish I didn't live here.

ListeningQuietly · 05/06/2020 18:31

On the up side
Biden has put his foot in it again
but
Trump is upsetting the middle as well as the left
so there is a chance of that panning out

There is a chance that the perpetual liar Johnson will capitulate to the EU and tell his fans he has not
they believe all his other lies and how would they tell

Oh look, a squirrel

yoikes · 05/06/2020 18:47

cat

yoikes · 05/06/2020 18:49

LQ Trouble is once you incite the mob you have to deal with the consequences....BJ is scared and frankly he should be.

pontypridd · 05/06/2020 18:53

I voted to leave too Crunchycarrot.

I have no idea why now.

6 months ago I was furious with myself but now so much has happened I feel like that person who voted to leave wasn’t really me.

I’m angry about everything now. Have always hated the Tories - I can’t even put into words what I feel about this government now.

colouringindoors · 05/06/2020 19:11

cat me too Gin

colouringindoors · 05/06/2020 19:18

yoikes interesting predictions, many of which I sadly agree with Sad

RedToothBrush · 05/06/2020 19:21

The pandering to regretful (and not so regretful) leavers on this thread makes me feel a bit queasy at times tbh.

Queasy? Ofgs.

What does it actually achieve by remaining angry at people who were conned? It seems that sometimes being merely respectful is interpreted as 'pandering'. I certainly do share common concerns and fears with many leavers at times. I think the main difference is in how I saw was the best way to deal with the same issue.

Its unproductive to get angry at other people without any power. Directing anger at those doing the conning at least has a point. Being angry at the gross abuses of power and massive conflicts of personal interest from those in government has a point.

I had a conversation with a guy, must have been 18 months or so ago, and it started with a real confrontation, but the end he insisted on shaking my hand because we had a really good conversation and expressed similar concerns and grievances. We didn't agree beyond that but it was very much worthwhile in understanding why we were motivated in the way we were. He's not done anything dodgy or potentially corrupt.

Its frustrating and annoying but making you feel queasy? Thats not healthy for you, never mind anyone else. And it doesn't change where we are now unfortunately.
