Today is the last scheduled day for talks with the EU.

We have til 30th June to ask for a transition extension. We won't.

That leaves us starring down the barrel of a no deal exit, when we still could be in a covid-19 crisis and the US may be in turmoil given recent events and the coming election...

It's not a pretty picture.

I can't find anything about the pêcheurs de Calais intending to bloquer anything since newspaper reports in 2018, but it would never surprise me. 😂

DGRossetti · 09/06/2020 17:06

In the interests of balance - of possibly of more interest to some here ( Louise Hmm ) seems British Farmers are organising a demo in London 20th June

www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/drive-tractors-trucks-cars-to-parliament-square-drive-slow-demo-tickets-108429748296

And if they feel inspired - or dare I say emboldened by recent events, then I hope it's as injury free as Bristol.

Peregrina · 09/06/2020 17:14

I do hope they take their slurry spreaders!
Or maybe spread rotting fruit in Whitehall and Parliament Square, thus creating a traffic jam.

DGRossetti · 09/06/2020 17:21

I do hope they take their slurry spreaders!

As a Stone Roses fan, I do sort of agree.

Of course they won't see Boris. It seems no one does these days ...

I also hope they invite chaps like Farage and Banks to address the crowd. Again, they won't but the declined invitation would be interesting to spin. I imagine Nigel won't be able to attend as he's already committed to a BLM rally in Haslemere.

Sky News, Ian King Live yesterday talking to Doug Bannister CEO Port of Dover.

Not on the website yet but it's on catch-up if you have Sky.

yoikes · 09/06/2020 17:28

Boris has plenty of time to play tennis.

Fiddling whilst Rome burns springs to mind...

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 09/06/2020 17:28

And I think Cap'n Farage will be away on the high seas trying to arrest more people on lilos.

ListeningQuietly · 09/06/2020 17:29

Johnson may say that Britain's establishment is not racist
but Black female MP's rather disagree
as do today,

Peregrina · 09/06/2020 17:30

But we are not going to ask for an Extension.

I suppose Boris,(or whoever is standing in for him at present) is hoping that the EU will say, please do, we want you to. I well imagine that they will call our bluff and say fine, we can manage without you.

DGRossetti · 09/06/2020 17:37

Johnson may say that Britain's establishment is not racist

Not really sure why the media gives a proven cheat and liar any airtime at all. Especially as he is our Prime Minister.

I wonder what the Donald feels about hanging around with such a proven loser ? It would be too funny if his aides decided that he'd boost his ratings by dumping Boris and the UK.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 09/06/2020 17:37

...And it was the Old Fartonians choice of Swing Low Sweet Chariot to praise Chris Oti when he scored a hat-trick against the Irish in 1988 that started that "tradition."

missclimpson · 09/06/2020 17:45

OK so not an actual threat from French fisherman. Justs coulds and maybes in the Brit press.
I am always enchanted by the warning in our local church. "Dieu te regarde pécheurs".
Just a little oblique line separating the fishermen from the sinners.
😂

Chersfrozenface · 09/06/2020 17:52

There must be a pun somewhere with sinning, fishing and peaches. Like the blackberries ripening on the wall.

DGRossetti · 09/06/2020 17:54

There must be a pun somewhere with sinning, fishing and peaches.

If there is, I'm sure the French will find it Grin .. from what I recall.

titchy · 09/06/2020 17:59

Surely if BJ asks for an extension it'll be in December so he can blame the EU for saying no?

DGRossetti · 09/06/2020 18:02

@titchy

Surely if BJ asks for an extension it'll be in December so he can blame the EU for saying no?
Well after he passes a bill in Parliament allowing him to do so ...
DGRossetti · 09/06/2020 18:04

Couple of days old, but asking the question everyone should be asking

yorkshirebylines.co.uk/what-happened-to-the-oven-ready-deal/

Has Boris been a bit too clever ?

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 09/06/2020 18:17

We have until the end of this month to ask for an extension.

I seem to recall a TV prog from the 80s about a poor young student receiving advice from a sweet lady who'd got through the last war on rationing with lots of handy recepies for boiled nettles and potato peelings on stale bread.

Could be worth digging out for the Netflix generation.

Peregrina · 09/06/2020 18:23

I had to think hard about that one missclimpson.

Having once been caught in an absolutely massive jam near the Channel Ports because of someone or other being on strike in France, I am not sure that Dover will deal with it swiftly.

We have to remember that Boris likes an easy life. Who he gives in to, depends on who gives him the most grief. We have to remember too, that for all the Cabinet desperately trying to support Cummings and his little adventures, the public didn't buy it. Too many people had already suffered.

Peregrina · 09/06/2020 18:47

Oh dear, things are difficult for Boris, or whoever is minding the shop. There is now a protest going on in Oxford about the Cecil Rhodes statue. Again this is something the students have protested about for a number of years, and got nowhere.

I am sure this isn't what he wanted when he became PM.

DGRossetti · 09/06/2020 18:59

I saw a tweet saying that the reason the powers that be are so keen that people should use "the proper channels" is because the powers that be control "the proper channels".

When does the deck-stacking reach a point where going outside the "proper channels" is justified ?

MashedPotatoBrainz · 09/06/2020 19:15

The feeling I get inside the EU is that we've got enough going on with covid and the aftermath of that to be dealing with Britain's petty tantrums. Take the deal, don't take the deal, but fuck off already. The grown ups have work to do.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/06/2020 19:20

"the reason the powers that be are so keen that people should use "the proper channels" is because the powers that be control "the proper channels".

Exactly that

Jason118 · 09/06/2020 19:23

If I was Barnier I would declare the talks over at the end of the month (assuming there isn't a deal by then), say thank you and walk away.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 09/06/2020 19:28

If I were Barnier they'd have been over years ago. But then my tolerance for English, exceptionalist nonsense is running at zero. Barnier has the patience of a saint.
