Westministenders: Reployed back to No Deal Planning

Now Covid-19 is over (yeah I know right) lots of civil servants who were switched from brexit no deal planning to covid-19 planning have been switched back to their original remit.

For some reason this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

We've also seen yet another doubling down on the EU not being flexible and how they need to make a deal. And lots of rhetoric about being serious about no transiton planning.

Remember we have something of a deadline looming at the end of next month.

So before we are even out of this crisis, the government have lost interest. Today's press conference was an eye opener - Van Tam openly said that the time taken to get test results was too long and wasn't good enough yet and meant track and trace wasnt still operational despite it being such a crucial factor in being able to go into the next phase as planned on 1st June.

Another deadline we won't make - the Manchester Nightgale still has patients and the local authorities in the NW are going mental. So the government is playing more silly buggers over blame and villianising the evil workshy teachers. Noting the government guidance for teachers on how to teacher children at home says fuck all and the guidance on reopening schools makes a Theresa May dog ate my homework style document look positively well thought out, in terms of practicality. (Not even going to touch on the question of whether its safe - the whether its workable one is more important).

I guess that means things are getting back to normal at least.

A recession looms, but workers rights are now fair game and fully in the government cross hairs - as we see from a lack of PPE for the 'heroes' and the attacks on the teachers. As well as the carers who were sold down river. That'll be the ununionised carers...

Taking back control.

Cummings Goings has distracted from this COVID cockup scandal by BJ:

Sunday Times Insight: 22 days of dither and delay on coronavirus that cost thousands of British lives
[[http://archive.is/qbvY7
archive.is/qbvY7]]

....After being initially hostile to the idea,
the prime minister put his libertarian instincts to one side and agreed in principle that a lockdown would be necessary.

However, rather than locking down immediately,
there was a further nine-day delay as he deliberated over how and when a lockdown should be introduced.

That prevarication proved, for some, to be fatal.

New back-dated modelling assessing the historic spread of the disease

  • which is published for the first time today -

estimates the number of people infected in the UK was indeed doubling every three days during late February and early March,
just as some of the initial reports from China in late January had suggested they might.

The work, produced jointly by an Imperial College London team led by Samir Bhatt and Oxford University,
suggests that on March 3 - the day the government committee gave the warning about the dire consequences of a mitigation approach -

there were about 14,000 infections in the UK.

Such was the speed of the spread of the virus that

200,000 people were estimated to be infected by the time the government began to change its mind about its policy on Saturday, March 14.

The last nine days while Johnson wrestled over the decision on when and how to go for lockdown were particularly brutal.

By the time the lockdown was announced on Monday, March 23,

such large numbers were doubling over such a short period that infections are estimated to have soared to 1.5 million.

According to the data,
no other large European country allowed infections to sky-rocket to such a high level before finally deciding to go into lockdown.

Those 20 days of government delay are the single most important reason why the UK has the second highest number of deaths from the coronavirus in the world.

I love that Labour ad. I do hope they are all convinced that they have neither bent nor broken any of the 'rules', though.

Whatabouttery.

Labour didn't advise on the drafting of the regulations that Dominic Cummings couldn't be arsed to follow.

I know it's whataboutery : it's what MN and the media are brilliant at, though and they will be examining any muck to rake as we speak!

Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2020 15:35

Today's briefing delayed by an hour....

HesterThrale · 24/05/2020 15:40

Police have just turned up at Dominic Cummings’ house and knocked on the door. No one in.

Nto so sure about that - haven't picked up too much sense of that for now.

Which is what is making this such a story.

The old adage about being nice to people on the way up might be proving true here. It's certainly a known fact that "the Dom" (as everyone might start calling him) has not been bothered to be nice to many people while he felt he enjoyed the protection of the PM.

There's also the possibility that this has been engineered to disguise the fact the ERG and acolytes have suddenly realised that Boris pulled a fast one last year with his "Brexit brilliance" and sold them well down the river. I can well believe they happily voted for something on a "chaps" say-so, because that is still how Britain is run in the 21st century.

The comments on that thread are priceless ..

Try the fridge, you might find Boris there too ...

Neighbours are concerned for his wellbeing because they haven't heard anything from Laura Kuennsberg for over 24 hours.

plus some analysis ...

We know DomCum is at No 10 Question is... why are his wife & son not at home? Thought we were all meant to stay at home. Press pack have been there since this morning, so not a quick shopping trip or walk in the park. So WHERE ARE THEY? Breaking rules AGAIN???

Rearrange these words to make a sentence:

Roost home chickens Cumming to

Miaowse · 24/05/2020 15:52

Robert Halfon, one of the MPs to tweet support yesterday, has now changed his mind (sounds like a very full inbox may have made him re-think):

www.yourharlow.com/2020/05/24/harlow-mp-robert-halfon-regrets-writing-tweet-over-pm-adviser-dominic-cummings/

My own MP, usually very loyal and keen to defend the gov to the hilt, is remaining silent on this.

DarkenedTimes · 24/05/2020 15:52

On a different topic, have you guys caught this thread too?

The schools’ reopening plot has thickened. Problems, problems.

Yes Rossetti, a few ERGers calling for DCs head which has made me wonder whether we should hang on to him? Horrible prospect but maybe Hilaire Beloc applies here?

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 24/05/2020 16:02

Johnson's apparently showing up at the briefing today. Inquiry incoming I bet

BigChocFrenzy · 24/05/2020 16:02

Maybe better for Cummings to stay on officially, rather than have PM by Skype

  • probably he would continue telling BJ what to do, one way or another
Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2020 16:23

Yup darkened . The EYFS guidance was only issued today! There have been 41 different versions of primary schools guidance so far. Nothing for secondaries.

Bloody teachers, though, eh !?!

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 24/05/2020 16:23

Oh yes, full inquiry into this, may take some time, so no more questions on that subject.....

Also wouldn't put it past him to cancel the Journos and take questions from Year 6 about going back to school.

Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2020 16:25

The peach in the EYFS guidance is about the children having access to tests.

Ermmm, they are 4 and 3..

RedToothBrush · 24/05/2020 16:33

Mr Toothbrush here.

Watching the reporting of Cummings on BBC News, they've put a clip of him up packing his pushchair in to his car. If you were cynical and assumed he was showing what a family man he is then it's interesting that he didn't know where the button to close the boot was. Can't be doing it that often.

I spotted that too, Mr Toothbrush Grin
Maybe he should have read the manual Wink

Peregrina · 24/05/2020 16:48

Will Johnson doing the briefing improve matters, or will he put his foot in it? We will find out very soon!

One commentator to Rawnsley's Observer article, points out how many Tory voters are pensioners and grandparents and will have stoically endured not seeing family and grandchildren for a couple of months and will be very annoyed by Cumming's behaviour.

rogueantimatter · 24/05/2020 16:49

What time is today's press briefing?
