Westministenders: Reployed back to No Deal Planning

Now Covid-19 is over (yeah I know right) lots of civil servants who were switched from brexit no deal planning to covid-19 planning have been switched back to their original remit.

For some reason this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

We've also seen yet another doubling down on the EU not being flexible and how they need to make a deal. And lots of rhetoric about being serious about no transiton planning.

Remember we have something of a deadline looming at the end of next month.

So before we are even out of this crisis, the government have lost interest. Today's press conference was an eye opener - Van Tam openly said that the time taken to get test results was too long and wasn't good enough yet and meant track and trace wasnt still operational despite it being such a crucial factor in being able to go into the next phase as planned on 1st June.

Another deadline we won't make - the Manchester Nightgale still has patients and the local authorities in the NW are going mental. So the government is playing more silly buggers over blame and villianising the evil workshy teachers. Noting the government guidance for teachers on how to teacher children at home says fuck all and the guidance on reopening schools makes a Theresa May dog ate my homework style document look positively well thought out, in terms of practicality. (Not even going to touch on the question of whether its safe - the whether its workable one is more important).

I guess that means things are getting back to normal at least.

A recession looms, but workers rights are now fair game and fully in the government cross hairs - as we see from a lack of PPE for the 'heroes' and the attacks on the teachers. As well as the carers who were sold down river. That'll be the ununionised carers...

Taking back control.

So, people who are not Cummings, who do not have COVID, and who are not meeting vulnerable people, but break lockdown, have to get monstered by the press and resign. Preferably on a day which distracts from news of the UK having the highest death toll in Europe.

But people who are Cummings, who have COVID, and are meeting vulnerable elderly parents, are totally entitled to drive 260 miles to do so.

🤔

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 18:12

In which case, Clav, he was looking after his child, so why did he need to drive 250 miles to do so?

He probably drove up there expecting to work all day as a senior adviser to the PM - but then became unwell.

I'm not keen on Dominic Cummings but I still think he's within the guidelines as they were in March - there are exceptions listed. If Catherine Calderwood and Neil Ferguson had done the same (instead of having a jolly) I don't think they would have lost their jobs. DC may still go - Nicola Sturgeon backed Calderwood initially.

AuldAlliance · 23/05/2020 18:20

A job he could have done in London.

The rules were clear.
They didn't say that if a family member had CV symptoms, you could hop into a car with them and a child and drive cross-country to another town. You can certainly try to argue, as people are, that DC was interpreting the rules in his own way, but that doesn't change the basic fact that he was flouting them.
Stay at home. Not Stay at one of your relative's homes.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 18:25

He was up there for his mum's birthday party.

Making an ill person (his wife) sit in a car for several hours each way is STUPID
Covid or no Covid

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 18:28

The rules were clear.

His job is classed as essential and his small child would be classed as a vulnerable individual - but I don't care if he stays or goes.

TheElementsOfMedical · 23/05/2020 18:28

They didn't say that if a family member had CV symptoms, you could hop into a car with them and a child and drive cross-country to another town.

Also, I'd be very impressed if this car load of viral shedders - one of whom was the all-important small child who made breaking lockdown not just excusable but admirable - managed to get from London to Durham without stopping at services, thereby knowingly endangering members of the public.

Plus, being far too ill to care for the child themselves, needing to be heartrendingly spooned Ribena by said child, plus heartrendingly worrying oxygen sats almost necessitating a call for medical attention, yet fine to drive hundreds of miles in search of very specific childcare.

Except, apparently, they weren't too ill to care for the child themselves because they were in a totally separate house and definitely weren't endangering elderly parents by installing a potentially infectious child in with them and there was no contact, or something or other?

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 18:30

endangering elderly parents
That's not clear either - DC's sister and niece/s are mentioned as helping.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 18:30

Clavinova
If Cummings job was essential, why did he bugger off up to Durham for a few days? that coincided with a family party

Peregrina · 23/05/2020 18:31

Anyway, he says he's not resigning. It will all depend on whether the story dies down; if it doesn't Johnson will probably have to get rid of him.

TheElementsOfMedical · 23/05/2020 18:33

How many have we got? Grin

So, just to be sure I have this right, the wife had COVID19 symptoms. She should therefore have been isolating for 7 days or until having a negative test. The rest of her household should have been isolating for 14 days if none of them got ill, and 7 days from symptom onset if they did. Why the fuck did they leave the house at all, let alone 250 miles??

TheElementsOfMedical · 23/05/2020 18:36

Why the fuck did they leave the house at all, let alone 250 miles??

I think that's covered by "Because... Reasons" - want a dabber?

FuckThisWind · 23/05/2020 18:37

Of course he's not resigning. He is far too much of a career psychopath / narcissist to do that.

But someone needs to sack him. Perhaps Carrie might have a word in Boris' shell like. Or maybe it will take an inquiry. Personally I think the sheer outrage from the public that is ensuing should do it. And with a bit of luck, Starmer will garner support too. So this may be the catalyst needed to show the tories up for their gas lighting disgraceful and lazy ineptitude.

georgedawes · 23/05/2020 18:37

Snap polling looks dire for the government, unsurprisingly. He's toast but burning everything else on the way down.

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 18:37

If Cummings job was essential, why did he bugger off up to Durham for a few days?

I guess he only needs a computer and video conferencing/zoom. Apparently teachers are finding it difficult to work at home with their small children under their feet.

SwedishEdith · 23/05/2020 18:39

How do you pronounce Cedd? Is it Sed or Ked? Like Wlfred, those Brexiters love their Anglo-Saxon names.

Peregrina · 23/05/2020 18:39

I guess he only needs a computer and video conferencing/zoom.

How well do they work in a moving car?

TheElementsOfMedical · 23/05/2020 18:40

I wonder two things:

  1. How many services they stopped at between London and Durham, knowingly exposing members of the public to COVID.
  1. What the real story is that this massive arrogant arse squirrel is meant to be distracting from.
TheMShip · 23/05/2020 18:40

I'm furious about this. My household did two periods of 14 day isolation. It was shit, especially the first one which started a week before lockdown. Couldn't get tested, delivery slots were like gold dust, but we pushed through it. Like hundreds and thousands of other people. One rule for us ...

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 18:46

How well do they work in a moving car?

Maybe he drove up there at night?

I actually came on this board by mistake - couldn't work out where my post had gone - going back there now. Grin

Peregrina · 23/05/2020 18:51

Maybe he drove up there at night?

Yes, and he used zoom and his laptop while he was driving? Pull the other one! His wife was ill, so she can't have been doing the driving.

TheElementsOfMedical · 23/05/2020 18:52

Virus shedding is not restricted to daylight hours.

To answer Sarah Wollaston's question - if you are called Dominic Cummings, travel is permissible. If not, no you have to stay at home and isolate.
