How will we measure Brexit’s success or failure?

Bearbehind · 21/01/2020 14:30

I’ve been pondering this for ages now

In any ‘normal’ project you’d have targets, objectives, deadlines, reviews etc but for Brexit beyond 2 deadlines of 31/1/20 and 31/12/20 there’s nothing

People talk about politicians being accountable now but what do we expect them to deliver and by when

Please stop dragging other threads into this.

It's unnecessary & actually quite goady.

malylis · 26/01/2020 18:27

This isn't a massive echo chamber there are lots of different views.

jasjas1973 · 26/01/2020 18:27

Bear, i recently went in there, made a carefully worded and polite comment in a non brexit related discussion and the first reply was "You can xxxx off back to a remain thread...."

I left in fear of my personal safety, it's not a nice place, grubby, aggressive clientele, run down inner city, den for drug dealing/criminal elements, doesn't serve food and not suitable for families.... a relic in the age of gastro pubs (only joking before i get kneecapped)

LilyMumsnet · 26/01/2020 18:30

Hi folks,

Can we not turn this into a TAAT by talking about other current running threads, please?

Thanks.

NiceGuyNeddie · 26/01/2020 18:34

Yeah jasjas, pack it in or I'll kneecap you meself! Grin

Bearbehind · 26/01/2020 18:38

Well done neddie - you’ve managed to get us a warning here too

OP posts:
LilyMumsnet · 26/01/2020 18:40

Just to say, making this a TAAT will be taken as an attempt to derail, and as such, it would be breaking talk guidelines - which can result in a warning or a suspension. Please do bear that in mind.

NiceGuyNeddie · 26/01/2020 18:41

That must be very annoying to someone who admires good posting form

Bearbehind · 26/01/2020 18:42

Seriously neddie could you please stop this

OP posts:
NiceGuyNeddie · 26/01/2020 18:47

So OP, did you ever clarify what would represent Brexit success to you? Or answer those posters who stated what they would be looking at for measures of success?

Parker231 · 26/01/2020 19:08

Very difficult to judge what is going to happen next and any successes when Ministers are giving out different messages. Hard for businesses to prepare when they don’t know what to prepare for?

NiceGuyNeddie · 26/01/2020 19:12

And we don't even know which Ministers will be around after 1st Feb or what influence they will actually have when they are constantly contradicted by Boris so who to believe?

frumpety · 26/01/2020 19:36

I think it would be best to separate the referendum and the promises made during that and the last election and the promises made in that.

The only one that appears to be holding any water is actually leaving the EU.

Bearbehind · 26/01/2020 19:38

I don’t disagree but, as I’ve said repeatedly on here - there’s no alternative

We just have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best

jasjas1973 · 26/01/2020 19:49

We just have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best

I don't really know how we can do either, what do you suggest?

Bearbehind · 26/01/2020 19:50

You do whatever is in your ability / might be needed and see what happens

OP posts:
Parker231 · 26/01/2020 19:53

I have two clients who have already decided that the risks of continuing with a UK trading base are too great. One has moved to Belgium in order to be based in the EU and the other is in the process of moving their base to Singapore. All UK employees are being made redundant.

Coppersulphate · 26/01/2020 20:41

I don't think now is the time to think about the metrics of success.
Once all the euphoria and despair have died down then we will be better placed to think about it.

I still maintain there are those for whom the mere fact of Brexit will be a success and a similar number maybe who feel it will always be a failure.

However the vast majority of people just want their lives to improve.

And that is difficult to measure because circumstances may change for the better because of Brexit or in spite of Brexit . Or vice versa.

Lonelycrab · 26/01/2020 20:56

However the vast majority of people just want their lives to improve.

This, although it’s vague, is true. And there lies the circle that needs to be squared.

NiceGuyNeddie · 26/01/2020 20:57

Yes, you certainly have said it repeatedly over 34 pages, you seem to be indefatigable in your determination to spread a sense of hopelessness and apathetic acceptance but have met a wall of resistance, thankfully

Peregrina · 26/01/2020 21:03

Another question that no one seems much concerned about is not just the how, but when will we judge it to be a success or failure?

Churchill chose to miss the boat on our going into the European Coal and Steel community, in 1951, (being more wedded to the rapidly dissolving Empire), so the UK then missed out on being part of Treaty of Rome in 1957. The United Kingdom's first application to join the EEC was in 1961.

So ten years at most to realise that a mistake had been made but a further 12 to be able to rectify it.

I know that Rees-Mogg doesn't expect us to know until 50 years have passed whether it was a success or not, by which time, I will certainly be long dead and he either might be or well into his dotage.

Coppersulphate · 26/01/2020 21:06

Bear, I know you are a remainer and have been since these threads started in June 2016.
You have shouted at me many times about it.
But, I have to say, that I admire the way you have stoically accepted that it will happen and are trying to move on.
You are right.
There is no alternative course of action.
I hope we can find a way to measure its success or failure but I also hope that eventually we will be able to resolve our differences for our personal and collective sanity.
I hope Boris keeps his promises to the north. I was born and brought up there. I hope the NHS has the money it needs and the transport links are built.
I am optimistic and positive.
I believe this is better for my mental health.

Bearbehind · 26/01/2020 21:06

neddie have you offered anything to this thread, or indeed any other, which is any more than goading and provocation?

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 26/01/2020 21:08

Thanks copper

In my head the time for trying to change the outcome is long gone

Battling it further achieves nothing

I now just want us to get on with it and make the most of it

OP posts:
NiceGuyNeddie · 26/01/2020 21:11

Bear, stop attacking me. If you don't like what I post report it or ignore it but leave me out of it, I am not interested in your opinion of me
