Westminstenders: War and Weirdos

RedToothBrush · 03/01/2020 21:34

With weirdos set to run No10 and Trump seemingly having started a new war in the Middle East, 2020 already looks set to be a cracking year.

To start off your year, it turns out that chinese curse about interesting times is actually a fallacy...

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_you_live_in_interesting_times

Happy New Year.

May we make 2030...

Squid 💐
Take all the time to recover that you need
You have given more than your body and mind had to give

The system's demands on hospital doctors are cruel and must break many

"What is the internation legal situation when a country does not leave another country when asked ?"

An occupation
Occupied Iraq

"What is the internation legal situation when a country does not leave another country when asked ?"

Of course we could have asked people from NI Sad

I wonder how being excluded from the sexy shiny bits of Galileo is working out for the UK and it's defence industries right now ?

BigChocFrenzy · 07/01/2020 14:13

NI still has a narrow majority of Unionists

Iraq has no historical ties to the USA and if the govt wants the USA out, they probably reflect the wishes of most people there

Be curious to watch Boris straddling that Iraqi fence.

I believe it was the UK which wanted third countries excluded, or at least to make it difficult for them to get involved - to stop them having to waste time with countries which had no hope of joining putting in repeated applications.

I wonder how the new plans with New Zealand and Australia are coming along/

Mockers2020Vision · 07/01/2020 15:40

Parliament returns, but PM is still on holiday.

A good thing nothing much is happening at the moment.

yolofish · 07/01/2020 15:44

PM still on holiday?? WTAF? no dont bother answering that... been busy today and not caught up with anything.

Mockers2020Vision · 07/01/2020 15:46

....Apparently, his absence is because he believes in cabinet govt. so thought the Defence Secretary could take the questions in his very busy absence spaffing in bed "Running the country."

CrunchyCarrot · 07/01/2020 15:47

Parliament returns, but PM is still on holiday.

According to Ben Wallace (Def secretary speaking just now in Parliament), Johnson is 'busy running the country which is something you will never do!' (said in reply to JC's question of where the PM is).

DGRossetti · 07/01/2020 15:56

For Galileo ?

Last I heard they said they'd be quite happy to use it as long as the UK pays for it all. Which is never going to happen.

Which leaves the UK rather exposed. Yes, we can use the old US GPS tech. I'm sure we can pay the US for "no refunds" access to the latest GPS tech. But (like our "independent" nuclear deterrent) that leaves us at the mercy of POTUS.

I think Indias GPS is coming along nicely. Who knows ? Maybe a few hundred thousand visas and we can have a go on that ?

Mockers2020Vision · 07/01/2020 15:58

GPS? Pah!

We can use good old Ordinance Survey printed on linen.

Peregrina · 07/01/2020 16:03

When will we realise that we have cut off our nose to spite our face?

DGRossetti · 07/01/2020 16:19

When will we realise that we have cut off our nose to spite our face?

If by "we" you mean the Brexiteers then "never". They will never admit it.

The rest of us will just plod on.

Coming back to GPS, I've just remembered that when my last employer (insurance company) was looking into autonomous cars, one workstream was looking at how all the various liabilities fell out once you remove the driver, with GPS being flagged as 3rd party liability, since it was outside the control of the vehicle manufacturers and (then) the UK government. Assuming we do bottom out the legislative framework for autonomous vehicles, I wonder how that would look in the insurance policy ? "You insurance is invalidated if the GPS goes belly-up".

DrBlackbird · 07/01/2020 18:20

So is it just me, as does the silence about leaving in 3 weeks seem deafening? Just exactly what will happen on Feb 1st? Other than Nigel's party. Should I stock up?

borntobequiet · 07/01/2020 18:38

Well I’ve booked to go to Portugal for a week, departing on the 31st.
Actually I don’t expect anything to be different, including the pitying looks from citizens.

DGRossetti · 07/01/2020 18:43

The danger now for the "bad boys of Brexit" is that with an apparently devoted Brexiteer at the helm whatever gets delivered will be called "Brexit". There is some cold comfort to be derived from imagining one N.Farage trying to kick off about how "Brexit is betrayed" to discover nobody is listening. Even Tommy Robinson has drunk the Tory Kool Aid.

In hindsight Labours mistake will have been to miss the opportunity to campaign on a "get Brexit done" platform, knowing damn well that once they were in power, they could deliver whatever they wanted.

It's worth reminding ourselves that all the problems the UK faces in leaving the EU melt away if we don't ...

Brexit could become the UK version of that wall where not a single brick has been laid nearly 4 years after Trump took office.

No change until the transition is over. After B-Day we shall begin to see where BJ really wants to take us, not very far at all or over the cliff.

Peregrina · 07/01/2020 19:16

What I could see happening is a gradual decline - basically a continuation of what we have seen over the past ten years.

When will the Opposition parties get their act together though, and start holding Johnson and his cronies to account?

40 New hospitals were promised - in five years time Labour - assuming they sort themselves out and don't collapse completely like they have done in Scotland, should be publishing numbers of how many have been built. Ditto with the number of nurses.

Peregrina · 07/01/2020 19:28

Since when did Johnson care about Scotland? You know, that country to the north of England.

Part of me wants Scotland to become independent, so that Cameron and now Johnson can be held responsible for the break up of the UK. I will leave May out because in three years she didn't manage to Brexit.

Mockers2020Vision · 07/01/2020 19:29

I see Wrong-Daily has given Corbyn 10 out of 10 for his visionary leadership. (Visionary as in seeing things that aren't there.)

This will be a Moment of Truth for Labour: Does it want to be a serious political party that aspires to power, or a circular wank-squad aiming at a very small Biscuit on the carpet.

derxa · 07/01/2020 19:41

Part of me wants Scotland to become independent, so that Cameron and now Johnson can be held responsible for the break up of the UK. Please don't wish this. It would be catastrophic for Scotland. Even worse than Brexit. Who cares what people think of Cameron or Johnson- they don't care what you think
And Labour. Where to start. I watched Ben Wallace the Defence Minister in Parliament today. He was calm, informed and on top of his brief. On the other side - fucking Jeremy Corbyn

Torchlightt · 07/01/2020 19:42

Will we be able to use the European Health Card?
