Westminstenders: War and Weirdos

RedToothBrush · 03/01/2020 21:34

With weirdos set to run No10 and Trump seemingly having started a new war in the Middle East, 2020 already looks set to be a cracking year.

To start off your year, it turns out that chinese curse about interesting times is actually a fallacy...

Happy New Year.

May we make 2030...

Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

My take on it is... After the "celebrations" on 31 January, all EU related issues will be shut down. By the Press of course as they actually run the country anyway!

So it will be EU/Brexit free Spring Summer and Autumn and even if it is a disaster, it will not be portrayed as such. Ever.

Brexit is dead now, it will be delivered on 31/1/20. (Transition period accepted). Back in that box now, it is all over isn't it? Because no matter what, the promise has been kept and that is all that matters.

I welcome, really welcome those who think otherwise. But honestly that is it to me.

Torchlightt · 07/01/2020 20:27

What do yo mean Kinsss? What do you expect to happen after the transition period?

yolofish · 07/01/2020 20:34

I asked on the Brexit Arms what people thought, if anything, would happen. The consensus seemed to be that international affairs were taking over.

NoCountry · 07/01/2020 20:37

Might as well have asked one of the cats on this thread..

kinsss · 07/01/2020 20:38

@Torchlightt

Nothing much TBH. But in any event we won't care because Brexit is done lol. Do you think otherwise?

yolofish · 07/01/2020 20:40

Still not sure which way you are approaching this convo kinss?

As said above, I think international issues will take over, and am not impressed that BJ, allegedly on holiday, doesnt have time to come to the HoC - I guess that's only for the little people.

AuldAlliance · 07/01/2020 21:30

kinss
How can Brexit be both done and dead?
(I am vvv tired and not feeling v bright)

kinsss · 07/01/2020 21:35

I just think that come 31/1 Brexit will be forgotten. It will be done. Because the Press rules the UK and what they say becomes the rule, and they will not report on anything negative.

I did not intend to offend anyone, it is just my gut feeling.

Tanith · 07/01/2020 21:38

Isn’t BJ going to change the name of it and ban any mention of “Brexit”?
NF might want to hold fire on his celebrations.

Peregrina · 07/01/2020 21:39

Brexit might not be spoken about or recorded, but it won't be 'done' by any means. The hard work of negotiating trade deals will then start, and if Johnson and the Tories chose to rip up the rules in force between ourselves and the EU then we can expect tariffs and customs paperwork to be imposed. Meanwhile, any trade deal with the USA is likely to take some time and is almost certainly going to be disadvantageous to the UK.

jewel1968 · 07/01/2020 21:40

I think I know what you mean Kinsss.

SwedishEdith · 07/01/2020 21:46

I know what kinsss means - to lots of people (look at the 'What bores you thread?') it will be "done" and they'll pay no more attention to the issue as they never really paid attention to it in the first place. But, the reality is it's just starting and the drip drip of things not being quite as straightforward as they were will begin. And, much like people who want both a functioning free NHS and don't want to pay taxes, they won't join the dots.

AuldAlliance · 07/01/2020 21:47

Some of the press, maybe. So I suppose the readers of certain sections might possibly be conned into thinking it's done and dusted (if they have their heads in very thick paper bags).
But some papers have been very clear about the negative effects of Brexit from the outset and will report on them.
31/01 is the beginning of a long period of tough negotiations and nothing will be "done" for some time.

And when it transpires that trade deals are in fact tricky and lengthy to hammer out, that might not be reported on by all media outlets, but disruption to trade itself will be obvious.

Or are you suggesting the UK is like N. Korea, with people peeling bark off the trees to eat it while the state press publishes glowing articles about how good life is under the regime?

There would have to be some swift and v brutal restrictions on press freedom in the next couple of weeks for that to happen. Cummings can't tuck his own arse into his breeks, so I wouldn't bet on him managing to muzzle the entire UK press between now and the end of the month.

HesterThrale · 07/01/2020 22:13

So is the Russia report ever going to be published?

I, for one, would like to know if, and how much, our democratic processes are being interfered with by other countries.

Peregrina · 07/01/2020 23:05

At present the plans are for Big Ben to remain silent.

It's not exactly going to plan yet, is it? Still, we mustn't speak too soon, the plans could still be brought back.

NoCountry · 07/01/2020 23:26

So is the Russia report ever going to be published?

Perhaps they're hoping we've all forgotten about it? Cummings probably has the attitude that they'll keep sitting on it until someone dares try to compel them to publish - and who will dare?

Likewise the CPS Arcuri investigation - bet they won't want to do anything to upset Johnson now

CustardT · 08/01/2020 02:05

I spoke to someone today who works in the UK largest pharmaceutical distribution centre. He says they have 3 YEARS of drugs stockpiled.

Insulin, cancer drugs and everything else.

So absolutely no chance of Brexit affecting medicine supply. (For 3 years)

So who was starting / spreading that rumour, and why?

ContinuityError · 08/01/2020 07:01

So is the Russia report ever going to be published?

Doesn’t a new ISC committee need to be appointed / approved first, which can take months? The Independent reported that Johnson approved the release of the report just before Christmas but release would now be subject to the approval of the new ISC?

7Days · 08/01/2020 07:01

How can that be true? I thought many of them had a short shelf life and coukdnt be kept that long.

mathanxiety · 08/01/2020 07:03

I know someone on a government panel overseeing stocks of vital medicines such as insulin, cancer drugs, etc. whose information directly contradicts your friend's CustardT. It's three months, not three years, for many vital meds.

Many medicines have expiry dates that would be well in the past by three years.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 08/01/2020 07:05

Sounds unlikely, Custard, for many reasons. The sheer space required, the storage conditions, the shelf life of the drug....

Danetobe · 08/01/2020 07:22

I think your contact is misinformed custard 😂. I wish I was as naive, life must be so simple.

frumpety · 08/01/2020 07:33

Insulin, cancer drugs and everything else.

Can you ask them to release the currently hard or impossible to get medications, such as certain HRT and contraceptive medications or does everything else not include everything else ?

Also can you keep insulin for 3 years post manufacture ? I think most of the pens I see have a years expiry date on them, so will expire in 2021.

mathanxiety 3 months sounds far more credible than 3 years Smile
