We’re lucky as DH can apply for Australian citizenship. Feeling so angry about the state of the county upping sticks seems like an extreme but satisfying plan!

Considering Scotland, but its unlikely to happen any time soon.
I can apply for Irish citizenship. Haven't done it yet because the paperwork side is a bit of a nightmare (the parent I can apply though has no state ID, for a start, and doesn't want any).

mathanxiety · 20/12/2019 20:15

ElfandSafeKey, I thought you would only need birth certs?

Oldandsad · 20/12/2019 21:47

I was scared to open this board as I thought there are no remainers on MN. I am thinking of leaving, if that is still possible.

raskolnikova · 20/12/2019 21:57

I used to live in Spain and want to move back there before Brexit. My DD was born there and I want her to get citizenship, but she would have to naturalise first. I'm also sick of the rain...

MaidofKent78 · 20/12/2019 22:05

We're not sure yet. EU husband who is an academic and I have a set of very transferable skills so could find employment (assuming I was allowed to work). Young DC so moving wouldn't be a huge upheaval in terms of education.

I think we're going to watch and see until autumn 2020 at the earliest (DH will have made 10 years worth of NI by then) and see how things pan out...

Microdot · 20/12/2019 22:28

A cousin has lived in NZ for 10 years - got married and his wife wanted to go back home. He hates it and now they're divorced is determined to come back despite Brexit and Boris

beelzeboob · 20/12/2019 22:32

I’m sorry to say that if you think you’re escaping racism by moving to Australia then you’re mistaken in my opinion

NomadNoMore · 20/12/2019 22:44

I've already left, made sure I did so before the first Brexit date to exercise my freedom of movement.

LeithWalk · 20/12/2019 22:49

Yes definitely - not just Brexit but disillusioned with this country and can't understand the voting people and their choices. I feel there is a lack of moral purpose; I feel I don't belong ( don't want to belong) in a racist, selfish community.
Colleagues of mine working in education, redundant through yet another local authority restructure, left today to go back to Poland, Romania and Spain.

mindproject · 20/12/2019 23:03

I have lived in 3 other countries in the past and I have the option to move to one of them (a non-EU country) now to live permanently. But, I have decided to stay in the UK for now as DD is still in education for the next few years at least, plus I have a house and lots and lots of things I would have to sell, which seems very daunting. I hope I don't regret my decision. I really hope we have all been worrying about nothing.

AloneLonelyLoner · 20/12/2019 23:12

We did already to get out before the previous Brexit date (to mainland Europe). It does have its challenges sure but after last week's shit show I am now more than ever happy that we made the right decision and we have no intention of returning to the UK- unless Scotland gets its independence and then we'd move there, but in our case the grass has definitely been greener.

MaxNormal · 20/12/2019 23:40

We are moving but it was a decision taken independent of Brexit. However Brexit has made me a lot keener to do so, as I'm horrified by the loss of food standards and environmental protection that is heading our way.

MysteryTripAgain · 20/12/2019 23:58

Good luck with motto Australia. If you think UK taxes are high wait and see what’s it like in Australia.

Tax on steroids apparently.

mathanxiety · 21/12/2019 02:12

@Oldandsad - go to the Westministenders threads in the Brexit section. There's a big Remain contingent there.

Danetobe · 21/12/2019 06:46

We moved because Brexit meant better research and career opportunities had popped up in other places. I wouldn't leave only cos of Brexit though. Certainly not to Australia - too far and too hot. As well as other things already highlighted. I wanted my children to have a strong second language and I don't have 'roots' in the UK so it was a very easy decision for me. If you have a roots there, good job, friends, family and a happy life (outside of politics) I would stay and fight 💪🏻 Young people in the UK are a real hope for the future and despite the Brexit batshit attitude that is currently pervasive I have hope that the youngsters can pull the ship steady in 20 years or so

There are lots of us! Smile

I have dual Australian/British nationality, but even if my health permitted such long distance travel and upheaval (it doesn't) I wouldn't return Down Under, it has plenty of problems too, not least the climate change ones (which their govt doesn't accept!).

I think if I were fit and able I'd relocate to Scotland as I feel more in tune with their ideals than the way England is going.

daisypond · 21/12/2019 07:24

I would if I could, but don’t have the points for many counties. I’d envisioned retiring in Italy again, too, where I used to live and work, but don’t know how possible that will be in the future either- not very. I wouldn’t qualify for living there as a non-EU citizen. One of my children is now working - with a visa- in a former Soviet bloc country not in the EU and won’t return to the UK now - the job market is too limited. Would like to work in Europe but don’t know how possible that will be in future.

BrokenLogs · 21/12/2019 08:21

All these accusations about Australia followed by 'apparently'. So you don't know but don't let that stop you spouting opinions like it's fact 🙄

We left a year ago, very glad to be out, life for us is much better in Australia. We are paid more, bought mortgage free and wait for it....have free healthcare too thanks to Medicare.

I think if you're up for an adventure then leaving the UK for a few years while it beds down Brexit isn't a bad thing. I've said we may return to the UK one day, dh days never but we'll likely land again in Europe at some point.

BeardedMum · 21/12/2019 08:24

I am not British and I would like to leave but children are an awkward age educationally and DH is British and I don’t want to leave him. We plan to go to a third ‘country’ where we can both work. We work in the same sector and it would be easy for us to make such a move. Many of my friends and colleagues have left already for the same reason and I so wish I could too.

RoonyTunes · 21/12/2019 08:32

As someone who moved to Aus 12 years ago and absolutely loves the place I would suggest you don’t make such a big move without a lot of thought, don’t do it as a knee jerk reaction. There is no way in God’s earth that I would ever live in the UK again and most of my British friends are of the “thank - we moved” mindset as we have watched the shitstorm evolve, but it is not for everyone.

ThunderboltandLightning · 21/12/2019 08:52

Would love to. But DH won't leave his mum and I think it would be too tough for DS1 to manage. The company I work for is about to merge with another, and there will be a new EU Head Office. That might create me an opportunity, but only if there is an international school nearby.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 21/12/2019 09:15

We moved to Oz before Brexit, and thank our lucky stars that we did! Taxes are not higher here, and the weather in Perth is pretty fine too! The people aren’t any more racist than in the UK or Ireland ( lived in both). But it’s a hell of a big move, and not one to be taken lightly, although we absolutely love it.

Oakenbeach · 21/12/2019 09:32

I voted Remain in the referendum, but think the
few that are seriously planning to emigrate as a result of us leaving the EU before we’ve even begun to really see the impact are seriously over-reacting.

daisypond · 21/12/2019 09:38

But that’s why people are consider moving now - to Europe at least - before there is an impact, before it is too late and borders are effectively closed if you are British.

dimsum123 · 21/12/2019 09:43

@Oakenbeach, so we should wait for the ship to actually sink before leaving?! Hmm
