A new thread as the other one is getting full. I'm enjoying the post election discussion. Every view is listened to and welcomed.

Brexit is happening, but what kind of Brexit will it be?

New leaderships for both Labour and the LibDems.

Most importantly, will Britain be Great in 2024?

I think a lot of people thought like Cendrillon.

As you know, I thought Brexit + the ERG group were worse.

Which really says something about the hideousness of what this GE was.

Random18 · 15/12/2019 19:00

Cat I just hope Borus neutralises the ERG now.

That's why I am happier that he has a large majority rather than a small one

thecatfromjapan · 15/12/2019 19:03

I'm less hopeful, Random.

But time will tell all.
We may well find ourselves fighting this GE all over again, with the same players, the same stakes, in a year's time.

I'm exhausted just thinking about that.

TatianaLarina · 15/12/2019 19:04

Had Labour scraped a hung Parliament Corbyn he wouldn’t have been in power long enough to dance his loony tunes and Parliament would have voted them all down anyway.

Everyone knows how much I’ve laid into him on here. Because I could see just how many people he was driving away.

TatianaLarina · 15/12/2019 19:05

But ultimately he was less of a threat to this country’s wellbeing than hard Brexit and the hard right.

Random18 · 15/12/2019 19:06

Sadly the politicians who put coutnry above party are all gone.

Random18 · 15/12/2019 19:09

Well seeing BJ's threats to the BBC today- it's not good.

The BBC have has a disastrous election. How the right can think there is a Remain / Left bias is unbelievable.

But that doesn't mean I agree with the BBC or C4 being threatened in this way when they have been trying to do their job - albeit only the odd occasion this election.

Also I think the terms Remainers / Leavers should be confined to the dust bin.

We are leaving so it no longer matters how we voted in 2016.

XingMing · 15/12/2019 19:10

Have RTFT and am now completely confused.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 15/12/2019 19:10

I would love a decent opposition. I have great respect for Kier Starmer and Hilary Benn. They did what they could over Brexit. Parliament was stupidly fractious over Brexit caused by grandstanders on both sides of the House.
Boris does need to be held to account and Corbyn has had his chance and failed.
McDonell and Corbyn misread the country and produced policies that felt like they were straying into old style class war. People who should have voted for them didn’t feel they could. So even from a centre right perspective I am angry with Corbyn for what he has done to the Labour Party.
I think we are all better off when there is some political balance.

thecatfromjapan · 15/12/2019 19:11

I know, Tatiana.

I'm particularly grim tonight because I'm increasingly convinced we're not going to get a functioning Opposition back any time soon.

And I truly, fervently, believe we need it.

I know that too many on the hard Left remain convinced they still only need 'one more push'.

And I know how hostile they make actual, real CLPs for anyone who doesn't believe that.

And I know how powerless the PLP are to take them in.

They are 'Labour' now.

That is going to be your choice next dance round the roses.

Obviously, I'm hoping I'm wrong - but I don't think I am.

A lot will become clear with the next choice of Leader.

If it's Rebecca Long-Bailey, I'm afraid we are all rather stuck.

placemats · 15/12/2019 19:12

Bear Beg to differ. The devil is in the details. We shall wait and see. Good that there is some commonality between us.

Sadly the politicians who put coutnry above party are all gone

Very true and that’s one of the worst aspects of the most unedifying six months British politics has ever seen.

kinsss · 15/12/2019 19:16

Is there anything to be said for an Opposition of National Unity. Ha ha.

Could be worth a shot if they all got together. After all, combined they got a bigger vote percentage than the Tories did thanks to FPTP.

I know, I know. I will wake up from my dream anon.

Alsohuman

You're welcome. We're all just regular human beings after all.

Piggywaspushed · 15/12/2019 19:17

They can't all be gone, surely?? There must be some...

Bearbehind · 15/12/2019 19:18

tatiana I fail to see what difference it makes what my demographic is.

I’ve said before I’m a 40% tax bracket earner but not in 6 figures

I’m happy to pay proportionally more tax though, but not to pay for broadband for the likes of me and others who don’t need it

The Conservatives and BJ won a GE with a majority large enough to slaughter Labour for a generation. The next kick at goal is Brexit, and in the meantime the idea is to consider how to approach the voters who have lent their votes. How Labour reconstitutes itself will determine whether there's a credible alternative. FWIW, I rather liked our Labour candidate's ideas and priorities, but it was interesting that the party's national leaders views were completely ignored in his publicity, which suggested that he was distancing himself. He lost by 20,000 votes regardless.

Alsohuman · 15/12/2019 19:23

I can’t think of many @Piggywaspushed. Margaret Beckett, Jess Philips, Lucy Powell, Stella Creasy, Yvette Cooper seem to be about it for Labour. I’m stumped when it comes to the Tories.

Bearbehind · 15/12/2019 19:23

BCF in case you hadn’t noticed we are actually having a sensible discussion here, but if you want to wade in with your preconceived ideas, who am I to stop you and your note emojis

thecatfromjapan · 15/12/2019 19:24

It's interesting, Bear.

And, let's face it, it humanises you.

We get to sketch in some details and an outline of at least one of the people who voted the other way.

It communicates.

And other people - like me - tend to share information, albeit quite tentatively. It shows good intent. It's the social media equivalent of all those social norms of good Will, such as shaking hands and small talk.

placemats · 15/12/2019 19:25

Crap.

The last time I started a thread I got the shocking news of a relative dying suddenly.

Now I've got news that is quite alarming about my beautiful mum. She's fine and well but despite her absolute shitty week she still managed to get out and vote in person. I salute this wonderful 94 year old woman. But I'm still concerned. I can't get over to NI to see her just yet. We have sent flowers. She is in good hands.

Oh, that's awful, placemats.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 15/12/2019 19:26

Careful BCF the winners seem rather touchy today Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 15/12/2019 19:26

Poster I hope you're Ok

Of course ignore the Tory gloaters
But when you feel ready, take a deep breath and think where you want your Labour party to go from here
then discuss it with fellow Labour members - all of them, not just Momentum
