A new thread as the other one is getting full. I'm enjoying the post election discussion. Every view is listened to and welcomed.

Brexit is happening, but what kind of Brexit will it be?

New leaderships for both Labour and the LibDems.

Most importantly, will Britain be Great in 2024?

Yeah instead we ended up with a man who is taking Russian funding so what was your point?

thecatfromjapan · 16/12/2019 17:51

That's quite funny, Red.

In a slightly bitter way.

Boris is gonna Boris.

(Well spotted.)

thecatfromjapan · 16/12/2019 17:53

It's not the best choice the electorate ever had, Just.

Maybe, just maybe, if we had offered something a bit better, they might not have voted the way they did?

missclimpson · 16/12/2019 17:56

It is certainly a sad state of affairs when someone who comes from a working-class background and works their way up to become Director of Public Prosecutions is seen as inappropriate to lead the Labour Party for being part of an "elite". Jesus wept.

thecatfromjapan · 16/12/2019 18:03

Oh, not everyone in Labour thinks like that, don't worry MissClimpson.

We're all just chatting and throwing ideas around.

He's still the bookies' choice. 🙂

thecatfromjapan · 16/12/2019 18:04

P.S.

Should we be trying harder to keep a list of all the things Johnson does?
Or are we still giving ourselves a small holiday before thinking about the impending nightmare?

DGRossetti · 16/12/2019 18:05

Boris Johnson drops a gigantic dead cat on the table about shredding worker and environmental protection at some point in the future to distract his hardline Eurosceptic MPs that he is shredding their power to block him from extending Brexit transition now

Right now, I'll take anything I can, but I do recall I floated the notion that Boris can happily shit all over his own hardliners now in the last thread.

Personally I wouldn't necessarily think that's what's happening here. However, team Boris would have to be absolutely bonkers not to give themselves as much wiggle room wherever they can. Having followed Theresa May who single handedly managed to tie herself in knots with red-lines and being in permahock to some faction or the other.

If it emerges that team Boris are doing that ... well it's intriguing.

One thing to watch for (early days) is whether there's any leeway in the WA and future arrangements to allow the US to use the UK like some sort of international crowbar to continue wrecking the EU after we are no longer a member. Because there are quite a lot of Americans that would happily see that happen. It's hard to understate how much they hate the EU.

missclimpson · 16/12/2019 18:07

I know @thecatfromjapan. I have been a member of the Labour Party for fifty years so I am used to disappointment. 😨

CrissmussMockers · 16/12/2019 18:09

Thornberry appears deluded enough to think she has a constituency beyond Holland Park Avenue. Discard her, and it's looking like Starmer vs Wrong-Daily the Momentum Sooty.

Battle for the soul of the party.

placemats · 16/12/2019 18:11

When Blair won his overwhelming landslide in 97, what did the Conservatives do to change? To face up to Blair?

William Hague
Iain Duncan Smith
Michael Howard

All of them absolutely useless!

Even when 'golden boy' Cameron won the leadership, he couldn't win outright against Brown. Had to go into Coalition with the quisling Libdems.

Not even May could win an outright majority and she had to go into a C&S pact with the DUP - ffs the DUP!

Labour has to get this right. There is no point in panicking right now. Let Johnson spout nonsense without the distraction of a Labour leadership.

Let Johnson own this! It's his Brexit after all.

Battle for the soul of the party.

This was the bollocks that was touted when Corbyn got in, so I'm sure anyone on the left will be the wrong choice no matter what yet I'm the one that pretty much gets called the ideologue [eye roll]

placemats · 16/12/2019 18:13

Scotland will leave, that's all I'm getting from my close relatives in Australia - the news is buzzing with it. Ireland reunited as well.

Britain no longer Great!

missclimpson · 16/12/2019 18:14

Yes the press would go to town on Thornberry. They would be calling her Lady Nugee the whole time.

placemats · 16/12/2019 18:16

Perhaps it's best to start a new thread about the prospective Labour leader?

OP posts:
Random18 · 16/12/2019 18:17

place I think you are right re Scotland.

The only thing that could stop it is if people are so fed up with uncertainty and referendums.

If BJ manages to get a good trade deal then things may be different.

But can you really see that happening............

placemats · 16/12/2019 18:21

Johnson will have to sing a Scottish ballad in Gaelic and dance a highland jig in order to placate the SNP when it comes to Brexit and the deal will be so soft, and accommodating he'll wonder why he bothered. I can't for one moment picture Johnson being soft and accommodating.

OP posts:
thecatfromjapan · 16/12/2019 18:21

There is one, placemats.

I'll shut up about it.

TheLevellers · 16/12/2019 18:22

When do all the MEPs come back - on January 31st? Will them being back make any difference to the internal dynamics of any of the parties?

placemats · 16/12/2019 18:23

If it's not Great Britain or the United Kingdom, what then do you bring to the table in new trade deals?

Anyone who thinks that Boris Johnsonwill change tack now that he has a thumping majority is forgetting that
Boris Johnson does not do anything

its was clear as day in London
he wafted about punting rash plans
other people did all the work and planning

he now has Cummings and a few ERGs pulling his strings
do not expect them to suddenly become moderate
all the moderates were pushed out of the party last month

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 16/12/2019 18:30

i wonder if Corbyn had been replaced by Keir Starmer they could have done better

Lucygoeswalkies · 16/12/2019 18:32

While Labour are busy having their ‘period of quiet reflection’, I have no doubt whatsoever that Tory strategists are already planning the next General Election. Say what you like about the Tories (and who doesn’t), they are both ruthless and extremely well organised.

ListeningQuietly · 16/12/2019 18:37

While Labour are busy having their ‘period of quiet reflection’,
During the next three months
the Tories will be pushing through a hard Brexit
dismantling Whitehall departments
making judicial appointments political
breaking the BBC charter
all without any functioning opposition

Nicky Morgan made life peer.

Alsohuman · 16/12/2019 18:42

Nicky Morgan’s just been sent to the Lords so she can continue in her old cabinet job at Culture, Media and Sport. Bet her family - for whose benefit she allegedly resigned - is pleased.
