Exit poll

Con majority of 68.

65 seats regarded technically as still too close to call. But that could mean an even bigger majority.

Blyth Valley has seen a 10% swing to the cons in line with the exit poll. 1st shock of the night

The systematic calling people cnts and murderers which went on on here last night as the results started to come in is the same mindset as the gloating you object to. What would you have said if the result had gone the other way. What would you have done if people called you that.

I think that framing is a bit disingenuous. First, there was no systematic calling of those words. One poster, just one, used the c word. I did not see any post referring to murderers.

Second, if the result had gone the other way, no one from Westminstenders would have gone to the Arms to gloat. In fact, from a quick look, I couldn't see that anyone had gone to the Arms to insult anyone there. Rather the contrary. But some Brexit Arms posters repeatedly posted their gloating here again and again (and again).

And the gloats were despite the fact that many here were not even necessarily Labour supporters and despite the fact that many posters here have told their heartbreaking stories of how austerity and Tory policies have ruined their family's lives.

So there was / is no 'same mindset', there is only the gloating...Depressing really.

The fightback starts here for me. I've just rejoined the Labour Party - resigned my membership when Corbyn couldn't make his mind up over Brexit - hopefully I'll be able to vote in the certain upcoming leadership election.

Piggy I have no clue. I really don't.

But as much as Labour need people in the Labour heartlands, they need people like me too.

I voted for Labour this time but their manifesto costings were eye watering. I just happened to take the view the Boris was the greater evil.

Piggywaspushed · 13/12/2019 08:44

Yes, that's a worry : what's left for ex miners, though? That's my MIL's constituency. I don't know how she and her DH vote. I know they voted remain but strike me as otherwise Tories. definitely not BXP though!

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 08:44

Labour's problem is that it is multiple factors, often conflicting

Most wanted Remain, but some wanted Leave

Some wanted revenge for Blair abandoning the North instead of carrying out radical policies, but others wanted a centrist Blair Mk II

imo, turning it into another mc centre party, a LDem Mk II, would kill off the Labour party
but it needs to decide what left means nowadays

Ideally, under PR, Labour would split into 3 coherent parties
Since FPTP makes that suicidal, can these very different groups compromise enough to agree on policy ?

borntobequiet · 13/12/2019 08:45

I’d join Labour but worried I’d be seen as Blairite centrist scum, which is an expression I’ve heard my otherwise v nice Corbynista colleague use.

hopefulhalf · 13/12/2019 08:45

The right not eight of me

Random18 · 13/12/2019 08:46

I am traditional labour viter so choosing Labour was easy for me.

I guess a lot who have not been brought up Labour would have found it impossible to make that choice.

Piggywaspushed · 13/12/2019 08:46

Yes random they need someone with a broad reach. Blair was posh but a Durham constituency which helped. I do love Jess Phillips but I think, Sturgeon aside, women get such a rough ride in politics and can be destroyed.

I am angry today. Really angry.
I have felt frustrated, annoyed etc... many times since the referendum but today I am ANGRY.

We have PIL visiting today. Last time I saw them, FIL went in a rant about how immigrants have invaded the country. And my MIL brushed everything under the carpet. I am an (EU) immigrant. Their grand children are dual citizens.
I’m not sure how I will cope been in the same room than them tbh. H has proposed for me to invent some work to do and avoid them....

MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2019 08:47

I’d like Labour to look at a major factor, not the only one, but a big one for many - spending. Economics. The policies are a confetti of promises that do not work.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 08:47

One poster called Labour "the party of the immigrants", but the BAME vote is crucial for Labour
Conflicting views from former Labour voters on so many issues

Press release from the Muslim Council of Great Britain. They are scared Sad:

STATEMENT

13 December 2019

General Election 2019: British Muslims fearful for their future

As the election result becomes clear, the Muslim Council of Britain today calls on the Prime Minister to reassure British Muslims of their place in our country.

Harun Khan, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain said:

“Mr Johnson commands a majority, but there is a palpable sense of fear amongst Muslim communities around the country. We entered the election campaign period with long standing concerns about bigotry in our politics and our governing party. Now we worry that Islamophobia is “oven-ready” for government. Mr Johnson has been entrusted with huge power, and we pray it is exercised responsibly for all Britons.”

Harun Khan added:

“We understand that the Prime Minister insists that he is a One Nation Tory. We earnestly hope that is the case and urge him to lead from the centre and engage with all communities.”

With the 2019 General Election campaign being the most divisive in living memory, Harun Khan called on the Prime Minister and all political leaders to work towards national unity. “We must all redouble our efforts to heal the country and bring communities together.”

Ian Warren @election_data
If you're just waking up, here's a chart. This is how Labour and the Conservatives have so far performed in towns and cities. @lisanandy @drjennings and the @centrefortowns have talked about this. #GE2019

Piggy what we're seeing is a rejection of Labour from the ex industrial towns. It's time to redefine the outdated understanding of the northern working class.

Labour expected people on lower incomes to vote for policies that would make their lives better (and those with less). What they missed was the competition felt by those on low incomes and fear of losing income through tax rises.

It's a race to the bottom. Upper class pitching the working class against the middle class.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/12/2019 08:49

Regarding the gloating look out for politicians ( and posters) who do not gloat. As I said before true statesmen and women show grace and good sportsmanship.

I do believe that hanging out with the defeated to gloat is weird psychologically. A normal response is perhaps a quiet congratulation with a fellow member of your winning team.

A tendency to be both a sore loser and a sore winner is a well know inductor of narcissism.... When narcissists win, "they might gloat excessively or act abusively to the losing party."

Still I suppose a lot of politicians are narcissistic anyway.

CanIHaveADrink · 13/12/2019 08:49

I can’t even begin to comprehend how people have been able to vote for BJ (not conservatives, that’s another issue) but for a liar, deceiving twat when only 16% of people think he is a reliable person.
Who votes for someone who they know is deceitful and a liar as their PM Angry

Arrrg.....

Random18 · 13/12/2019 08:51

Nandy for leader?

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 08:52

We've wasted enough time on the gloaters

They are saying the same old things:
"We have won, bow down and surrender, admit your sins"

Scroll on by 🎶🎵🎵🎶

and let's discuss where we go from here

Piggywaspushed · 13/12/2019 08:52

tanith that rather fits the voting map of England I mentioned before , Luton Labour , Bedford labour , much of the NW Labour, lots of Brimingham.

So much mention of anti Semitism which Labour could not quash; where is the discussion of other forms of intolerance?

Piggywaspushed · 13/12/2019 08:53

tiddle that's not 100% true : Huddersfield, Oldham, Luton, Liverpool, Newcastle , S Wales : all industrial , all Labour. What next for those people?

lonelyplanetmum · 13/12/2019 08:54

What I'm interested in now is what the Tories do. Will they pander you their lower income working base by shifting back more centrally.

Does anyone have a feel for how easy it will be for ERG types to dominate now?. Is there any chance that the increased majority and new voting demographic will dictate a real shift towards one nationism?
