Brexit Arms: Election Night Lock-In

Welcome to the Brexit Arms - it's going to be a stormy old night! We're about to be buffeted from right to left and back again with no real idea what the landscape will finally look like in the morning. All are welcome to weather the storm in the warmth and safety of the Arms - but please remember this a hospitable establishment so let's try and keep it that way.

We're kicking off the evening with our Back to the 70's theme night while we wait for the big main event to unfold. The juke box is loaded with all your 70's favourites. Feel free to dance round your handbags but please, no dancing on the tables…. this could be seen as having too much fun.

As always, we've got a nice big pot of PG Tips on the brew and Camp coffee by the mugfuls in addition to our usual alcoholic beverages.

On a serious note, we know that tonight's events are going to cause some upsets. With this in mind, the mint imperial bowls on the bar have been filled with Diocalms and we urge all our customers to make use of these. There should be enough to go round as long as nobody starts trying to stockpile. We simply cannot risk the need for plumbers to unblock our loos on Friday morning, as they could have been called out on strike by then.

Landladies on duty tonight will be:

20:00-22:00 Greenish (with Babychams, Cherry B's and vol au vents)
2200-midnight Twattage (with Classic Dmitris and cheeseboard)
Midnight-0200 Singing (with stiff brandies to calm the nerves, plus a selection of fresh nuts)
0200-0400 Hate (possibly with Albanian delicacies and a hangover cure)

We'd like to get the glitter ball turning with this absolute classic:

….fingers crossed similar scenes will abound in the Arms by the end of tonight. Enjoy!

P.s. When ordering drinks between 8pm and 10pm please supply your own drinks emojis. Thankyou!

Morning Dusty. DD1 says it was all the English students voting LibDem which did for Gethins - another one I got wrong.

Saw Macron's comments and also positive noises from Varadkar. I expect a lot of finessing away the hard / soft Border interpretations over the next couple of months.

Also on a hopeful note it sounds like SF and DUP both losing vote share could provoke some sense over Stormont.

howabout · 14/12/2019 11:36

kayaking I would add that the Labour manifesto very clearly pitted the public sector against the private sector. Most "working class" voters are private sector.

MamaMary · 14/12/2019 11:36

Yes, howabout, the progressive policies of the Tory party get forgotten about or not even discussed, because people prefer simplistic soundbites and stereotypes. 'evil tory'. 'if you vote for tory you are selfish and a nasty person' etc etc.

Proper discussion, analysis and debate is thin on the ground these days - you'll find it it in some newspapers, but you'll not get a reasoned, measured discussion anywhere on TV it seems.

The art of discussion and debate died with Twitter.

"Advice to my followers. You know my views on Brexit & Corbyn. But never look back. Brexit will now happen & Corbyn is history. We must move forward & make the best of Brexit & the Labour Party - with a plan for a better future (watch this space)"

I wonder how many other Labour politicians who had been using Remain as the stick to beat Corbyn will now be perfectly happy with Brexit? Worth noting that lots of Red Wall still to play for because people like Ed Milliband were saved by Tory / Brexit Party vote split.

That soo many Labour people refer to the Tories as far right demonstrates how far to the extreme centre and left we have moved. The current Tory leadership are the most liberal of modern history. The most interventionist of modern history. When we grasp that we can rebuild.

Bredan is a pro Brexit Labour Councillor

MamaMary · 14/12/2019 11:56

Lord Heseltine:

'We are not there to defy the will of the people.'

Pity it took 3 and a half years to decide that isn't it?

He adds - 'they didn't listen because they thought Brexit was the way out of austerity'.

Translation - they're stubborn and they're thick and they should have listened to us.

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 12:01

John Bloody Major.

He tried to justify his crusade to overturn the referendum by dismissing it as "the tyranny of the majority".

Brendan Chilton for Labour leader, by the way. He gets it.

The moral of the story is dear children....

Never underestimate a pissed off Northerner.

bellinisurge · 14/12/2019 12:13

As I am one, I would agree with that @dirtyrottenscoundrel

Hi everyone, just popping in to catch up while I'm having a quick coffee break.....why does it always feel like my 'to do' list carries on into infinity in the run up to Christmas??

Friday is slowly sinking in now, although it still does feel a bit dream-like. I'm so happy with the outcome :)

Great Times article today by Janice Turner titled "Corbyn is clueless about the working class".

There's a share token on this thread.

Dapplegrey · 14/12/2019 13:09

How many ‘peoples votes’ do they want?
Jesus Christ accept it.

They’re not still on about another referendum are they? It reminds me of the (probably mythical) Japanese soldiers running around in the jungle still thinking the war was on even though it had ended years ago.

Please can we keep the Brexit Arms thread going - it’s my favourite pub.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 14/12/2019 13:09

Never underestimate a pissed off Northerner

Yeah learnt that one early

Mum could be very vengeful Grin

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 13:23

It reminds me of the (probably mythical) Japanese soldiers running around in the jungle still thinking the war was on even though it had ended years ago.

You're bob on with that observation, DappledGrey. And no, not mythical. His name was Hiroo Onoda - please see my post earlier at 10.41.

Momentum is in Hiroo Onoda mode.

GreenishMe · 14/12/2019 13:30

JS and NS are now being blamed too on the other thread....for allowing Boris to have his election in the first place - although I'm sure they'd be being hailed as heroines if Labour had won.

I do kind of get what they're saying though....they both had their own agendas for not opposing it. It went to plan for one of them.

GreenishMe · 14/12/2019 13:36

Anyway must get on with my endless to do list....hopefully catch up again later.

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND.....!

See you later, GreenishMe - I'll keep an eye on things here for a couple of hours if you want.

However, folks, please start thinking about who is going to step up as the new Landlady for the new thread. At this rate, we're going to need one very soon.

It doesn't matter if you don't do memes or other nifty bits of technology. All that matters is that you set the pub rules (which are really quite established), provide the drinks and bar snacks, and welcome everyone who drops in. You'll get lots of support from us regulars if there's any rowdiness at the far end of the bar or any flashers drop by.

Come on, folks....

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 14/12/2019 14:17

Morning All!

I slept like the dead for once last night, and feel ready to re-enter the discourse! 🙌

Firstly, the arms doesn’t need to go anywhere, let’s keep it ‘the brexit arms’ until the trade deals reach a conclusion, and then keep it as ‘the arms’ going forward, it’s important to retain a voice against the typical MN hivemind on politics, for too long here, a certain ‘acceptable’ way of thinking has dominated, and people don’t feel they can express any dissenting views, in a supportive environment. This place offers that, and I would be sad to see it go! We are like an island in a deep sea of ‘right on’ thinking. Don’t let that sea swallow the Island once more... and, of course. People love a good meme, right Dusty? 😉😉

Secondly. Varoufakis can fuck off to the far side of fuck, why is no-one losing their shit over his downright xenophobia towards us? These self appointed warriors of wrongspeak? Where are they now? I used to admire him for his outspoken distrust of the direction of the EU project. Now I see, as suspected, that as always, the goal of the socialist utopian revolution, trumps all other good thought and reason in people, he has evidenced that clearly in his behaviour.

I am loving the sudden hands off approach to toxic Corbs, how fucking predictable. What a bunch of snakes. They are in this up to their necks too, and if they don’t see and acceot responsibility for that, then we are unlikely to see any chance of a good labour opposition for up to 20 years. The only one I have seen do that, with any real conviction as late, is Lisa Nandy. Maybe they are looking in the wrong place for effective leadership.

And bellini....

“Anything to stop no deal? I support. Anything to stop Brexit? No. More people voted Leave and Parliament triggered Article 50.
I'm as fed up of people trying to stop Brexit as I am of people lobbying for a No Deal Brexit.”

Couldn’t fucking agree with you more. I have never actively campaigned for a no deal, although I always accepted it as a possible outcome that didn’t make me unduly uncomfortable. This is the point isn’t it? people like Gina miller, at this stage, in their last phase of delusion, are actually creating more risk for that scenario, by fucking around with the process we currently have on the table. I’m beginning to wonder if she is a secret no-deal double agent tbf...!!

get the fucking message Gina. ‘People’ have voted, 3 fucking times. If you want history to look upon you favourably, in any small way at all, as a peoples champion for the voiceless (I don’t think that, but some do) then back the fuck off, pick up your ball and go home.

Gina, U ok Hun? Hmm

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 14/12/2019 14:18

Morning? Lol, afternoon... (I am existing on a different time zone today clearly.) BlushGrin

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 14/12/2019 14:38

Rmours around about Dawn Butler going up for leadership? Are they fucking kidding? She is full on momentum level and wants to throw women under the bus for Self ID, just like swinson. Are they mad? They really don’t get it do they? Bye Bye Labour. You’re doomed.

It’s a shame really, as I would LOVE to see a woman leader from the BAME community step up, it would be an amazing historic achievement, but she is not the one imo, anymore than Diane Abbott would be.

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 14:40

I'm relieved to see you, Epic. I was just on the verge of sending out a search party Smile

You forgot to call "a nambulance" for Gina. Grin

AutumnRose1 · 14/12/2019 14:43

I thought it was a waaahmbulance?

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 14:46

😂🤣AutumnRose

#WaaahmbulanceForGina

AutumnRose1 · 14/12/2019 14:50

😂 I don’t know what a nambulance is?

Another person who seems to have lost it in the 3 years when I wasn’t paying attention- Paul Mason. Didn’t he have a sense of balance in the past? His Tweet from the exit poll

“ If so - a victory of the old over the young, racists over people of colour, selfishness over the planet.”
