Brexit Arms: Election Night Lock-In

Welcome to the Brexit Arms - it's going to be a stormy old night! We're about to be buffeted from right to left and back again with no real idea what the landscape will finally look like in the morning. All are welcome to weather the storm in the warmth and safety of the Arms - but please remember this a hospitable establishment so let's try and keep it that way.

We're kicking off the evening with our Back to the 70's theme night while we wait for the big main event to unfold. The juke box is loaded with all your 70's favourites. Feel free to dance round your handbags but please, no dancing on the tables…. this could be seen as having too much fun.

As always, we've got a nice big pot of PG Tips on the brew and Camp coffee by the mugfuls in addition to our usual alcoholic beverages.

On a serious note, we know that tonight's events are going to cause some upsets. With this in mind, the mint imperial bowls on the bar have been filled with Diocalms and we urge all our customers to make use of these. There should be enough to go round as long as nobody starts trying to stockpile. We simply cannot risk the need for plumbers to unblock our loos on Friday morning, as they could have been called out on strike by then.

Landladies on duty tonight will be:

20:00-22:00 Greenish (with Babychams, Cherry B's and vol au vents)
2200-midnight Twattage (with Classic Dmitris and cheeseboard)
Midnight-0200 Singing (with stiff brandies to calm the nerves, plus a selection of fresh nuts)
0200-0400 Hate (possibly with Albanian delicacies and a hangover cure)

We'd like to get the glitter ball turning with this absolute classic:

….fingers crossed similar scenes will abound in the Arms by the end of tonight. Enjoy!

P.s. When ordering drinks between 8pm and 10pm please supply your own drinks emojis. Thankyou!

Sorry, just catching up with the thread. We were out collecting our DS from his stint at his Scouts’ charity fundraiser car park. Nice to see some new posters.
I’m not a Gina Miller stalker, honest, she seems to find me 👀.
Her latest crusade in her words is moving Remainer tactics from stopping the Brexit deal to Britain’s future trading relationship with the EU. Quote, “ I think the battleground will move to future trading with the EU. We will try to influence in Parliament and in campaign group to make that as soft a Brexit as possible”.
I am still feeling a huge sense of relief and exhaustion. I hope The Brexit Arms will continue to stay open for business, even if under a new name.

Twattage13 · 14/12/2019 14:57

Awesome - McDonnell has resigned and confirmed he will not be in any new cabinet...

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 15:05

Wow, just wow, Twattage.

He and Jezbollah drove their Party at breakneck speed into a brick wall and now he's walking away from the wreckage?

The game's afoot, Watson.

bellinisurge · 14/12/2019 15:06

Good. Nasty piece of shit that he is.
Labour should have supported the WA, backed those ERG nasties into a corner and then agreed to an election about the post WA world. And all the other things they claim to be so set on.

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 15:10

“ If so - a victory of the old over the young, racists over people of colour, selfishness over the planet.”

Oh dear, Autumn, Paul Mason has never been one to let inconvenient truths get in the way of a deeply engrained opinion.

Anyone who thinks that the Conservatives are stuck in a mindset, should consider this: it's the only national political party to have had two female Prime Ministers, two female Home Secretaries, one female Defence Secretary, one female Trade Secretary.

Which other political party in this country could even begin to match that?

The new Conservative Party already looks different. For a start, there has been an immediate 29% increase in the number of woman MPs. There are now 86 women in the HoC and while there is still a long way to go, that's a considerable improvement on the 67 women MPs of the 2017 intake.

Some more facts Paul Mason wouldn't like. Look at the holders of the three Great Offices of State: the son of Pakistani Muslim immigrants, the daughter of Ugandan-Indian refugees, the son of a Czech Jew who fled the Nazis as a child refugee. Boris himself is the great-grandson of a Turkish minister who was assassinated by his political rivals.

And it gets worse, from Paul's point of view. The Party Chairman is the son of a Sierra Leonean. The Work and Pensions Secretary was a Barnardo's Child. The former leader of the Scottish Conservatives made history by being the first woman openly lesbian to be elected as party leader - and she is still the darling of the wider Conservative Party because neither her biological sex nor her sexual orientation matter: she's just damn good at her job.

By the way, the youngest MP in the HoC is now Sara Britcliffe. She has just taken Hyndburn off Labour. She's 24 - and yes, she's a Conservative.

Sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, youth - none of these things matter in the Conservative Party. What you are does not matter. All that matters is what you say and what you do.

Awesome - McDonnell has resigned and confirmed he will not be in any new cabinet...

Great. I was more scared of him than I was of Corbyn. And he's 68, so he presumably doesn't think he can make a comeback when the dust has settled.

Rumours on twitter jess Philips or Emily thornberry want to stand as leader

Thornberry? When the new leader's first job will be to win back the traditional working class voter? No chance. Her white van tweet will haunt her forever.

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 14/12/2019 15:16

Dusty re macro I thought it was a rather meek... Please don't compete or something comment...

The tables have finally turned and it just goes to show how incredibly weak our parliament made us in the face of tough negotiations.

Piggywaspushed · 14/12/2019 15:19

The youngest MP is being misreported. It's still a female but she's Labour MP Nadia Whittome. She's 23.

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 15:25

Thanks, Piggy. I've just looked and you are right. I'd googled "youngest MP" and it went straight to Sara, saying she had replaced Mhairi Black who now 25.

Still, it's refreshing to be able to see that the Conservative Party is bringing on new talent.

time4chocolate · 14/12/2019 15:25

Awesome - McDonnell has resigned and confirmed he will not be in any new cabinet..

Great stuff, that’s two bits of very good news in two days, would we be pushing our luck to go for a hat trick? Anyone heard any good news rumours that might hit tomorrow?

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 14/12/2019 15:28

“Awesome - McDonnell has resigned and confirmed he will not be in any new cabinet...”

He hasn’t fully resigned from what I have seen, I think he intends to stay on, just not in the cabinet. So not all great news 😬... (I might have misunderstood though...)

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 14/12/2019 15:32

Yeah, just double checked, sounds like he is heading for the backbenches.

Piggywaspushed · 14/12/2019 15:34

There seem to be three very young new Mps, all female. It's a good thing , I hope.

DustyDiamond · 14/12/2019 15:35

Worth noting that lots of Red Wall still to play for because people like Ed Milliband were saved by Tory / Brexit Party vote split.

YY

Mark Wallace (a Tory commentator) did a twitter thread advising newly elected Tory MPs in formerly Labour strongholds to get in urgently touch with their forerunners such as Lee Rowley (NE Derbyshire), Ben Bradley (Mansfield), Simon Clarke (Middlesbrough South & Cleveland East), Eddie Hughes (Walsall North) & Jack Brereton (Stoke South) - all of whom were voted in with slim majorities in 2017 & massively increased their majorities this time round.

If the new intake work hard for their constituents & BJ does the right thing by regenerating & investing in long-ignored regions then there's no reason why these regions won't stay blue, with even more red areas flipping too.

There's a HUGE opportunity now for a massive drive for a better Britain across the board

Twattage13 · 14/12/2019 15:36

epic I didn't say he'd resigned as an MP, but if he's back on the back benches then there is no chance he is going to be in charge of our economic policy at any point in the future (which is / was my main concern). He will resign as Shadow Chancellor when there's a new leader forming a cabinet.

DustyDiamond · 14/12/2019 15:37

Just read the Times article linked earlier - Janice Turner absolutely nailed it

Will be interesting to see if Labour get the message now: purge momentum & get serious

DustyDiamond · 14/12/2019 15:42

McDonnell has resigned and confirmed he will not be in any new cabinet...

Nadia Whittome doubling up on virtue signalling and showing just how out of touch she is.

Taking home a "workers wage" of £35k. If you have a take home pay of £35k then with a final salary pension deduction you need a gross salary of approx £60k - not exactly a "workers wage" for many 23 year olds I know (certainly not nurses whom she cites). - perhaps the Headline is badly written and she means gross or perhaps she is naive enough not to know the difference - but that is the critique she has left herself open to

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/britains-youngest-mp-vows-only-21094591

She would be better to spend the extra quietly on her priorities - whether that be helping those in need or McDs and treating your pals. The Daily Mail did a decent piece on Mhairi Black in 2015 which very much conveyed the message she was trying to stay connected and true to herself while making the most of her opportunity for herself and others - good advice I think.

I'd actually rather not see very young MPs being elected. I'd like to see them getting some real life experience first.

howabout · 14/12/2019 16:13

I tend to agree with this although otoh a few added to the mix breaks up some of the in-group mentality which prevails otherwise - they come with less baggage and are beholden to fewer. The worst of the breed are the graduates of NUS - SPAD - MP imo.

DustyDiamond · 14/12/2019 16:15

I'm ok with very young MPs I think - providing there's only a very small number

It's good if the HoC has a broad range of ages from very young to very old - but the majority should be those with real world experience definitely

DustyDiamond · 14/12/2019 16:17

God yes
Career politicians are the worst

Agree with this too - there was a time businessmen went into politics in middle age but they seem to become philanthropists now as a way to do give something back/get around the tax system but mostly to have that influence whilst avoiding the ever deepening scrutiny on politicians' past lives/children. We need them back in the front line.

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 16:45

Anyone heard any good news rumours that might hit tomorrow?

Here's one I saw on another thread, Time4chocolate.

Dawn Butler is considering throwing her hat in the leadership ring.

With Red Dawn in charge, I think Boris and Dmitri could start work on their Ten Year Plan. TBF, I think they've already got that one up on the wall as we speak.

One of the things I used to drum into the heads of anyone wanting to climb the promotion ladder: the minute you make it, the very minute, start setting out your stall for the next rank up. It's pretty much the same strategy.
