Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

Everyone I knew listened to Capital in the 70s, "The Station That Rescued You From The BBC."

Only three people on R1 I ever liked, and they were all sacked: Kenny Everett, Johnnie Walker and Andy Kershaw.

(Always thought Peel was a tedious droney hypocrite who always claimed to 'like' whatever was edgy and fringey at the time.)

Pan2 · 20/11/2019 14:26

I remember Margot from The Good Life querying whether her and Gerry's tv does actually receive ITV.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/11/2019 14:28

Boris Johnson has just blurted out a key manifesto pledge ahead of their big manifesto reveal ... which rather takes the wind out of their sails (increasing NI threshold to £12000)

No wonder MI5 didn't trust him with matters of state security - the man's gob is a liability.

Tory officials now delaying his T.V appearance as they try and work out what to do.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/11/2019 14:29

Apparently they're actually in a bit of a panic about it Grin

QueenOfThorns · 20/11/2019 14:31

I also heard ‘I love damson jam’.

Radio 1 is still shit.

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 14:36

The Electoral Commission sent me an email to say they only regulate political finance and not campaign content. They said they will repeat their call to campaigners to campaign responsibly and transparently.

Isn't it interesting how the past 12 months have seen a sudden "not me guv" from left, right and centre in UK institutions ?

And we put up with it ?

ArseDarkly · 20/11/2019 14:40

DadDadDad - Someone needs to take one for the team and listen again... It's too much to ask! Shock

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 14:41

Meanwhile, your data is meaningless to those tasked to protect it.

www.theregister.co.uk/2019/11/20/public_sector_it_chiefs_undervalue_org_data/

Half of UK public sector IT chiefs think the data they're responsible for protecting is less valuable than private sector information, according to a survey by antivirus firm Sophos.

Just over 50 per cent of 420 senior managers quizzed by Sophos agreed with the statement: "The data held by my organisation is less valuable than data in a private sector organisation."

(contd)

Not really the assurance victims of domestic violence and abuse might have been seeking. Quite aside from the safeguarding implications.

ArseDarkly · 20/11/2019 14:42

Why doesn't he come out and say that the Labour Party will be neutral with induvidual MPs free to campaign for either side? Because the best thing is to bring the country together under whatever the majority decide?

I think that is what he thinks he's saying ballyhoo but somehow it doesn't come out clearly. They just need to the get the wording right so it sounds like a sensible compromise and not an evasion.

dreichwinter · 20/11/2019 14:47

Finally something JC has said that I can completely support, I love damson jam.

What did he actually say?

AutumnCrow · 20/11/2019 14:48

BBC news (the 24 hour one) live impeachment hearing - Ambassador Sondland testimony is looking like absolute dynamite, politely sticking it to Giuliani and Trump, and alluding to how he's been treated unfairly.

(Sondland is US ambassador to EU, with Ukraine / Crimea stability in his portfolio.)

Trump is really not going to like this.

mybrainhurtsalot · 20/11/2019 14:48

Corbyn definitely said I make my own damson jam and then Boris Johnson muttered something like “he doesn’t even want my damson jam” in a poor me voice.

Did anyone else notice that when Johnson initially said he’d give Corbyn a copy of his Brexit plan for Christmas, he then quipped “maybe by next year we’ll be able to see his own Brexit plan”. Surely that would only happen if Labour win the election? Evidence they are secretly expecting to pass the Brexit hot potato??

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 14:50

is "Damson Jam" a mondegreen for "Brexit plan" ? No, I don't either Grin

tobee · 20/11/2019 14:54

I barely got the chance to decide whether I liked Radio 1 or Capital as my dad had Radio 3 blaring out of all radios around the house.

The Ring Cycle on Record Review at 9 o'clock on a Saturday morning anyone?

ArseDarkly · 20/11/2019 15:00

Everyone else have to look up mondegreen? learn something every day...

RedToothBrush · 20/11/2019 15:07

Trains. I wonder if he likes trains

As Jo Swinson prepares to launch manifesto senior Tories fear Dominic Raab could be under pressure from Liberal Democrats in Esther and Walton. “The chat among Surrey Tories is that Dominic Raab could be in trouble,” a senior Tory tells me @joswinson @DominicRaab

But Esher and Walton voted Remain in the Brexit referendum by 58.43%. So thinking among the senior Tories worried about the foreign secretary’s prospects is that, as a prominent Brexiteer, Raab could suffer if the Lib Dems rally the Remain vote

The senior Tories are generally quite worried about the party in Surrey. They fear the Lib Dems could win Guildford for the first time since 2001 because Anne Milton, one of the 21 Tory rebels, could split the Tory vote after deciding to stand as an Independent

Other Tories acknowledge Dominic Raab is facing new pressure. But they think he will be fine: 1) the Remain vote was under 60% so Esher and Walton not designated as a massive Remain area; 2) the average age in constituency is older than national average which will favour Tories

Interesting.

LDs are definitely targeting the seat. They've done one of their push polls to drum up LD support.

The Conservatives acknowledging this is more interesting though. It suggests they may be concerned about turnout amongst Conservatives and are trying to drum it up.

Raab going would be glorious.

tobee · 20/11/2019 15:12

I'd give up Dominic Raab losing for Johnson losing many, many times

tobee · 20/11/2019 15:12

But let's have both gone

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 15:16

I'd give up Dominic Raab losing for Johnson losing many, many times

If I had to chose between Brexit and the Tories, Brexit wins every time.

lonelyplanetmum · 20/11/2019 15:26

That's the trouble with elections you risk losing skilled politicians ... Raab has learnt loads- he fully appreciates the importance of the Dover-Calais crossing for trade and everything now. Takes a long time to get up to speed on that stuff!

tobee · 20/11/2019 15:28
Grin
tobee · 20/11/2019 15:29

Fucksake how are we in this situation?

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/11/2019 15:30

Turns out one of the Lib Dem candidates in Birmingham has tweeted antisemitic messages, supported Assad in Syria, endorsed trump for president and stood as a UKIP candidate in 2010.

They are standing by him.

ContinuityError · 20/11/2019 15:33

Raab has learnt loads

Doesn’t seem to have learnt how to tell the time though Smile

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/11/2019 15:42

The Liberal democrats have now suspended the Birmingham Hodge Hill candidate
