Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

Thought Jeremy Corbyn did better than I’d expected. Not sure why I’m surprised at that tbh, he’s debated with Owen Smith, Yvette Cooper, Andy Burnham and Liz Kendall in the past and wiped the floor with them.

The non answer on Brexit is a problem IMO though Boris taking Every question back to Brexit got really wearing after a while. Honestly learned nothing. Shouting over each other was dire. Score Draw.

Dusty01 · 19/11/2019 21:57

Listening - I think we should be admiring of those Corbyn qualities. I wish I could be like that.

ListeningQuietly · 19/11/2019 21:59

Utterly
Corbyn's personal view on Brexit matters because he has to believe in whatever deal he is seeking with the EU after a vote.

We all know that he personally wants out of the EU and out of NATO and possibly out of the UN (cannot remember whether Seamus has persuaded him on that one)

its therefore hard to imagine him negotiating well for a BINO
that will save the country

ContinuityError · 19/11/2019 22:00

I’d take the YouGov poll on tonight’s debate with a pinch of salt - I did it, it was via YouDirect (which is often a random selection of people) and it was directly paid. Ker ching.

chomalungma · 19/11/2019 22:01

Just an obvious reminder that 51% / 49% for 'Who won' - especially when 'Don't knows' are excluded is basically the same result. Especially with the margins of error.

Won't stop people claiming it as a Johnson win.

ListeningQuietly · 19/11/2019 22:02

Dusty
I would respect Corbyn's non confrontational attitude a lot more
if it was not assocaited with spectacular fence balancing on the most critical issue of the current era
AND
a spectacular lack of flexibility in the light of new international evidence on things like UBI and nationalisation

chomalungma · 19/11/2019 22:03

I wish Jess Phillips was up against Boris Johnson in that debate.

bellinisurge · 19/11/2019 22:04

@chomalungma that would've been good.

RainfallfromAnotherPlanet · 19/11/2019 22:14

Johnson winning on appearance, mainly connected with the glasses

Johnson is very fat with messy hair. How can his appearance win anything?

SwedishEdith · 19/11/2019 22:15

its therefore hard to imagine him negotiating well for a BINO
that will save the country

He won't be negotiating though. That'll be Starmer.

Alsohuman · 19/11/2019 22:16

Corbyn's personal view on Brexit matters because he has to believe in whatever deal he is seeking with the EU after a vote.

There’s no logic to this. Johnson allegedly wrote two articles pre referendum, one for and one against leaving. He has no belief in Brexit, other than a career furthering vehicle. I don’t think his personal view has any relevance whatsoever, given that he’s promised another referendum.

ListeningQuietly · 19/11/2019 22:19

Boris has no views at all other than becoming king.
And he has Brexit secretaries like Raab who do not understand the rotation of the earth.
Bozo is currently bollocksing up Brexit

if Corbyn wants to be given that top job, he has to prove he'd do a better job
IMHO

ArseDarkly · 19/11/2019 22:21

I don’t think his personal view has any relevance whatsoever, given that he’s promised another referendum.

I agree but he has to make that more emphatic instead of sounding like he's being evasive. The party already has a position on the sort of deal they want and the EU has previously indicated they would be in favour (as expected with a 'soft' brexit). So they need to get the deal together and put it to the people.

Corbyn is just one vote out of millions - presumably a 2nd ref won't be decided by one vote either way!

Alsohuman · 19/11/2019 22:22

It wouldn’t be much of a stretch, would it?

ArseDarkly · 19/11/2019 22:24

why on earth Corbyn needs to take a position on Brexit - as in needing to stand on the side of either leave or remain? Surely it’s preferable for a prime minister to be neutral as it’s supposed to be a people’s vote.

Yep.

And Corbyn should have emphasised more how crap the Johnson deal is. And challenged the LIES about hospital building instead of just making a quizzical face.

Oakenbeach · 19/11/2019 22:25

Corbyn's personal view on Brexit matters because he has to believe in whatever deal he is seeking with the EU after a vote.

I think Corbyn could turn his position into a strength by stating that he will remain neutral in any referendum as he believes healing the country’s deep Brexit divisions needs to be a top priority for any PM, and he can’t do that if he sides with Remain or Leave..... And it’s not something Johnson could ever do with his deal.

chomalungma · 19/11/2019 22:33

It's been very well signalled that that was what Johnson would attack Corbyn with,

Labour must have practised this debate with Corbyn - and they must have focused group how the response comes across.

Somehow they need to neutralise this from Johnson - it would have taken the sting out of his closing remarks.

lonelyplanetmum · 19/11/2019 22:36

Ugh Farage just coming on the other leaders' debate. Why on earth with no MPs and less longevity does he get priority over the Greens?

cherin · 19/11/2019 22:38

Ive seen JC in real life and in that occasion (totally non political, I’d say very...agricultural) he proved an excellent listener. I think he was being very honest when he said he listens, and I’d trust him for that. Would I trust his policies? Not really. But I still think that he couldn’t do too much damage in 5 years of government, of which the first couple would be spent still “sorting out” brexit. Definitely nowhere near the level of damage a personality like Boris could do to society, economy, and institutions. Him- I would not trust him with bringing out the garbage.

RedToothBrush · 19/11/2019 22:47

Nigel Farage on QT.

His arms are too long for his body.

Alsohuman · 19/11/2019 22:50

Just seen James Cleverly on Newsnight. And they wonder why we don’t trust them ...

ContinuityError · 19/11/2019 23:09

Wasn’t that Cleverly (such an ironic name) sniggering in the background in the clip where Danny Dyer was firing into Cameron on GMB that was posted on here earlier?

Dusty01 · 19/11/2019 23:11

Cleverly was awful. Dreadful.

Rebecca Long bottom - is that her name? - spoke so clearly. She's much better than Corbyn. I think she should do the debate next time.

Dusty01 · 19/11/2019 23:12

Sorry I was talking about Newsnight.

I loved it when Emily Maitlis said to Cleverly - You dressed up party lines as a fact check service. That is dystopian.
