Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

Should have had a more relaxed set instead of that horrible dark thing. and let them sit down for godsakes - they must both be knackered from campaigning.

Peter Foster@pmdfoster

@jeremycorbyn
getting his talking points in on waiting times and private contractors....applause

@BorisJohnson
counters by saying NHS is "not up for sale" in any negotiations...trying to scotch that...
USTrade Rep has other ideas. See their negotiating objectives.

I found the question about personal integrity and trust interesting, and somewhat a missed opportunity for JC. He could have plopped a joke about himself having secrets only in growing techniques at the allotment, and not involving secret children...or not having repeated “31st of October” a million times a day for 3 months, just to do a U turn....

WineWineWineWine Let us not dither and get Brexit done as one nation! WineWineGrin

TheABC · 19/11/2019 21:05

After seeing that, I have realised gin alone will not be enough for December 13th.

Hoooo · 19/11/2019 21:11

Sooke to a political researcher earlier.
He's predicting a boris majority of 350.
Pass the gin? 🍸

Hoooo · 19/11/2019 21:11

Spoke even

cherin · 19/11/2019 21:13

God help us!!

TheABC · 19/11/2019 21:16

@Hoooo, what's the prediction based on? Do they go by polls, internal surveys, etc?

Just had an email from LibDems saying "Don't shout at the TV!"

I am looking forward to the Tory and Labour message later on (yes, I am an email geek).

TheABC · 19/11/2019 21:19

On the plus side, Brexit Arms should be very happy. Johnson is on course for a majority and absolutely obsessed with Brexit. (hic)

RedToothBrush · 19/11/2019 21:20

Anecdote time.

I know a LD candidate in a 'no chance' seat.

They stood in 2017. They are not particularly actively campaigning in their own constituency as its not somewhere they are likely to win.

Last time around they didn't get any questions from the public in this way asking what they'd do about X or Y subject, so they are surprised at the number of correspondence.

This time they are getting a lot from a variety of different individuals and groups. They believe some are genuine but some are less legitimate.

There are two conclusions I draw from this: people are more engaged this time around politically and they are looking around for an alternative as what they see on offer on a tribal basis alone they are not happy with.

The latter conclusion is the one that does make this election different from the last.

And I do think we will hear a lot more about it as things go on.

I still don't know anyone in my constituency who knows what they are going to do.

yolofish · 19/11/2019 21:21

OMFG. OMFG. Just wondering if I have the strength to watch the next batch at 10pm - may have to go and watch in bed.

BJ is a dithering, wiffle-wafflying bully (which I suppose we all knew anyway). And as for the 'appearance' thing - they must have run out of Eton fags to press his shirt, send him out for a haircut etc.

JC should have said he would remain neutral over the two options for a new ref, but other than that I thought he did well, he was much calmer and more direct and seemingly honest.

fedup21 · 19/11/2019 21:23

JC came across much better.

Ellie56 · 19/11/2019 21:24

DH who doesn't like Corbyn has just said that he came across the better of the two. But he doesn't feel he can vote for either of them.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/11/2019 21:26

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn

The politics of class are a'-changin fast.

These two images of England's 529 constituencies (blogged by @NeilDotObrien on @ConHome today) are fascinating.

Tories must turn more seats in columns 1 and 2 blue, than go yellow in columns 9 and 10, to win
#GE2019

Will they?

YouGov
(@YouGov)
"Leaving aside your own party preference, who do you think performed best overall in tonight’s debate?"

Boris Johnson - 51%
Jeremy Corbyn - 49%

(Figures rebased to exclude don't knows)

Further results to follow shortly at: t.co/begsQeyYOn pic.twitter.com/WHZivErxlE

November 19, 2019

What is it about those two numbers?

This result probably reflects that Corbyn did better than expected.

HesterThrale · 19/11/2019 21:37

Unscientific poll by Paul Brand.

Has Corbyn on 78%.

Dusty01
Re Danny Dyer and Corbyn not reacting.
he doesn't
Its one of the reasons the Journos hate him.
He does not drink, he does not swear, he does not bitch, he does not gossip.
Its why he is so flat in many situations
because he's never been in the habit of firing back killer quips

placemats · 19/11/2019 21:40

Having tea so can keep awake to see the debate at 10pm.

I thought Corbyn did better.

This will probably be the last we see of Johnson on a TV debate. Re debating, it doesn't matter who chairs the debate, Johnson always goes over his allotted time; to him, the only voice that matters is his.

ClashCityRocker · 19/11/2019 21:44

General consensus from the Clash social media scroll:

Diehard Boris fans thought boris was better.

Diehard corbynistas thought corbyn was better.

Everyone else thought it was pretty poor, but corbyn perhaps came across better.

yolofish · 19/11/2019 21:44

I agree placemats re the only voice that matters to BJ is his. I do wonder if the debating technique at Eton includes 'just keep talking over the moderator for as long as you can' - there was a famous poster on the sec ed threads who was a cheer leader for Eton, if I cba I would ask him but I'm drinking more wine before retiring to see if I can stay awake for the next round.

Apileofballyhoo · 19/11/2019 21:45

Screenshots of that chart BCF mentioned above - the middle one shows the whole chart. I took pictures either side so ppl could read the blurb.

Interestingly trending on Twitter in Ireland was #itvdebate and #leadersdebate (I think those were the tags) - 400,000 tweets. Ireland likes politics.

One thing I don’t understand (and yelled at the tv many many times!) is why on earth Corbyn needs to take a position on Brexit - as in needing to stand on the side of either leave or remain? Surely it’s preferable for a prime minister to be neutral as it’s supposed to be a people’s vote.

ClashCityRocker · 19/11/2019 21:54

I suspect if Cameron and corbyn had remained neutral originally the outcome may have been different.

Dusty01 · 19/11/2019 21:55

Has Corbyn been awarded 2 Nobel peace prizes and other similar things?

Why does nobody ever talk about this? It’s important and a key to why he’s different and non reactive.
