Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

Austerity is over. Johnson wants to invest in services and has shelved the corporation tax cut.

ContinuityError · 19/11/2019 20:46

UK corporation tax rate is currently lowest in Europe? Really Mr Johnson?

TheABC · 19/11/2019 20:46

Magic money tree time...

TheABC · 19/11/2019 20:48

Wow. We have been operating with strict fiscal boundaries...really Mr Johnson? One trillion pounds more borrowing over austerity?

BigChocFrenzy · 19/11/2019 20:48

Corbyn says corporation tax will be increased to around the levels of 2010 to support uni fees

and to address the "grotesque" levels of inequality.
< imo, the latter would require a lot more than a share in corporation tax ! >

Quick fire questions - stupid.

Things are too complex for quick answers.

RedToothBrush · 19/11/2019 20:51

Well neither of these pair are coming out giving me a better impression.

The host is dire. Johnson ignores her and is monumentally rude.

Nothing but soundbites.

No questions cutting through.

Total waste of time.

Pointless programme.

chomalungma · 19/11/2019 20:51

Johnson can just fuck off.

MyNameIsArthur · 19/11/2019 20:51

ArseDarkly · 19/11/2019 20:51

Ridiculous

OublietteBravo · 19/11/2019 20:52

Corbyn appears to be better prepared.

TheABC · 19/11/2019 20:53

Dear gods, can someone stop Johnson blurting out "Brexit" with every sentence?

MyNameIsArthur · 19/11/2019 20:54

@RedToothBrush completely agree

MyNameIsArthur · 19/11/2019 20:55

WineWine

HoneysuckIejasmine · 19/11/2019 20:55

I'm somewhat reassured by the groans when he mentions brexit but he's also getting a lot of cheers too. Johnson, that is.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/11/2019 20:56

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall

Laughter at Corbyn about his Brexit position.

Laughter at Johnson about the idea of his being trustworthy.

Should really scare and worry the teams of both.

Corbyn is winning on zingers and probably (just) substance.
They’re mainly just talking past each other.

Johnson winning on appearance, mainly connected with the glasses. It’s unfair but it matters.

Just a reminder, this is what UK public debt looks like over the past ten years.

The deficit is much smaller than it used to be (though not closed, contrary to what the Conservatives said).

The national debt is the highest it’s been in decades.

PM and Corbyn both agree austerity must come to an end.

Unsurprising from Corbyn wisely it’s otherwise.

Just a few years ago the Conservatives were arguing (said it was essential) that we must run a surplus in order to bring the national debt (below) down
All gone now

< austerity was pointless pain for the less well off, that damaged the UK economic performance
..... and is now being abandoned by the Tories without apology for the pain >

No straight answer for either of them. Corbyn looks really weird with these glasses, it makes you feel like he’s hiding his eyes on purpose. And he dodged the question about supporting this mythological new deal in 3 months or not (because of course no answer would make sense! If you negotiate it and support it you discourage remainers vote; if you negotiate and vote against you look like a time waster, to voters and EU alike)...Boris combed his hair for once, but he’s so full of air he needs to have weighted shoes to stay on the platform....
I switched it off in disgust

sunglasses123 · 19/11/2019 20:56

Has Corbyn got something wrong with his face? Corbyn won’t say what he supports?

tobee · 19/11/2019 20:56

I still don't think these presidential style debates suit our political system at all. But it's always seen as being necessary to ape in America in these things, that they are more sophisticated and modern than fuddy duddy UK. But it's all visual razzmatazz, style over substance personality politics over the pond.

AutumnCrow · 19/11/2019 20:57

Johnson just failed his oral exam bigstyle

LouiseCollins28 · 19/11/2019 20:57

Playing the “Get Brexit Done” drinking game was a baaad idea!! Wine Wine hic! Grin

ContinuityError · 19/11/2019 20:57

Finally score - I’d be 10 drinks in (mostly with “get Brexit done”, only a couple of “dithers” and “one nations”). “Oven ready” would have given me lucky 13.

cherin · 19/11/2019 20:58

One thing, though: Boris was by far the worst at time keeping and respecting the pace of the host. I suspect her being a woman had something to do with it

BigChocFrenzy · 19/11/2019 20:59

Peter Foster@pmdfoster

@julieetchitv
it's a quick-fire round..yes or no answers...

Is the monarch fit for purpose?

Corbyn "needs improvement"

Johnson "institution of monarcy is beyond reproach"

Is Prince Andrew fit for purpose?

@jeremycorbyn
"we must think of the victims" - applause

@BorisJohnson
agrees "the law must take its course"

OublietteBravo · 19/11/2019 20:59

I think Corbyn could’ve closed Johnson down by saying that he’d be neutral in Labour’s proposed Brexit referendum and not campaign for either side.
