Westministenders: Promises, promises

BigChocFrenzy · 17/11/2019 17:46

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

C&Ped DGR's post to remove strike through.

derxa · 19/11/2019 16:51

I think DGR was referring to a compilation of mistakes people have had with idioms with his elk. I get tobee

derxa · 19/11/2019 16:51
  • I get it
tobee · 19/11/2019 16:54

Agreed

tobee · 19/11/2019 16:55

Sorry my phone hadn't loaded.

"Agreed" was to Hooo upthread re the debate

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 19/11/2019 16:59

I am also directly descended from Charlemagne several times over I've since discovered after finding the research that linked us back to a particular person. Also through them, and as is much the case for a lot of people, I'm related to a hell of a load of European royalty and a load of Norman invading nobility. I may have managed to get a dig in to my father when he pulled a forriners coming over here, taking our jobs/lives/etc by telling him that's probably what people thought of his family in the 11th century Grin

Hoooo · 19/11/2019 17:04

Nah.
Common as muck farming stock here :)

thecatfromjapan · 19/11/2019 17:06

That's fascinating, DGR - and thank you, MySpareTime.

Hoooo · 19/11/2019 17:09

Thank you

Hoooo · 19/11/2019 17:11

I wonder who they are asking!!?

Quite aside from the provenance of the methodology explaining the absence of nationalist and smaller parties (if Greens are a smaller party ?) that seems to suggest we are settling in for a Labour-Tory pushme-pullme view of the election ?

MrPan · 19/11/2019 17:16

Those polling results are real head-scratchers.

Yes, who ARE they asking? And....are we really that stupid as a nation?

'Could well be', is the probable answer.

The Twitter account of Arron Banks, the founder of the pro-Brexit campaign Leave.EU, has been suspended after being hacked.

In a statement posted by the campaign's official account, Mr Banks said "personal data" had since been shared via Twitter.

He also accused the social network of failing to tackle the issue.

(contd)

anyone else find their face in a grin as they read the last ?

Has he not heard of 2FA ?

DGRossetti · 19/11/2019 17:21

Maybe the Irish secretly sponsored Brexit all along ?

www.theregister.co.uk/2019/11/19/who_loves_brexit_irish_disties_love_brexit/

Figures from tech industry analyst Context show a remarkable jump in server, storage and networking sales in the Republic of Ireland through the last two quarters, pointing to companies continuing to invest in insurance against a hard Brexit.

Against a backdrop of falling European sales, UK sales slumped 14 per cent in the third quarter, while sales in Ireland jumped 34.8 per cent in the second quarter and 26 per cent in the third quarter of 2019 compared to the same periods last year.

(contd)

That is never coming back to the UK, whatever happens.

thecatfromjapan · 19/11/2019 17:33

MrPan Totally agree.

thecatfromjapan · 19/11/2019 17:34

Yes, DGR. Ireland is an obvious re-location/ investment point for those fleeing Brexit.

@lewis_goodall
Have travelled around a lot for the last two weeks. As I’ve reported, my sense is that things are a bit different on the ground to what the national polls are telling us. But want to hear from you, if you’re an activist or candidate- how are you finding it? DM me, in confidence.

RedToothBrush · 19/11/2019 17:45

Remember YouGov have changed their polling methodology this week.

You would expect the Brexit Party to be much lower. You'd also expect the Conservative Party to be 'stacking' hugely in Tory held constituencies where there are no Brexit Party candidates standing.

It has the effect of distorting what happens at constituency level.

The Brexit Party might be harming the Labour vote in certain places (as they will be stacking too) but Labour being over 30% might also concern CCHQ too.

It suggests a squeeze on the LDs too though. Which theoretically is a good sign for the Cons.

The interesting bit of this poll (which isn't yet available publicly) will be the detail.

The don't knows, the women, the 30 - 49 age group and the regional breakdown.

prettybird · 19/11/2019 17:48

Talking about impact assessments or the lack thereof Angry......

Westministenders: Promises, promises
RedToothBrush · 19/11/2019 17:51

My point being that the YouGov poll today isn't like for like with previous weeks nor can be directly compared with 2017 and its new methodology (which asks intention based on who is standing in your constituency) will be massively distorting the numbers so anyone looking at them without fully appreciating how they have changed won't understand the cavets the methodology is producing.

YouGov meanwhile are starting to collect data on a constituency level which I'm sure we will see pop up in a late poll, which might indicate a few surprises for this very reason. And that's going to be the interesting poll when it's published.

Not this one.

But Labour North of 30%....

DGRossetti · 19/11/2019 17:55

The Brexit Party might be harming the Labour vote in certain places (as they will be stacking too) but Labour being over 30% might also concern CCHQ too.

If my FB is to be believed, the biggest single worry is a spike in voter registration.

thecatfromjapan · 19/11/2019 18:03

With regard to the BBC GE debate next week, & the news Johnson is sending Rishi Sunak to represent him:

Nick @nicktolhurst on Twitter:

'It’s no accident that Johnson is sending the youngest lowest ranking member of the cabinet to stand in for him in the debate.

It’s a deliberate attempt to decay the whole debate so people don’t take it seriously.

Aim is to stop people understanding the issues involved.'

I'm afraid I agree.

We are in a grim, grim place.

I actually cannot believe that people are still willing to vote Conservative, when that means voting for the abjection of all standards of public conduct, accountsbity, truth, etc.

I find it utterly heartbreaking and shocking.

thecatfromjapan · 19/11/2019 18:04

I mean, there's the (old, now extinct) Conservstive Party of Dominic Grieve, Anna Sounry, Ken Clarke, etc.

And Johnson's crew.

And they share nothing but a name, in truth.

Boris ducking a debate ? Tell me it ain't so ....
