Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

@RedToothBrushBrew hope you’re on the mend

Who is chairing the debate?

WeshMaGueule · 18/11/2019 21:23

is it the fact that the sun is out shockingly early in that picture?

I thought it was that Raab thought Britain's full potential lay in a group of canvassers whose average age looks to be about seventy-three Wink

It’s not just Boris Johnson’s lying. It’s that the media let him get away with it
Peter Oborne

"I have talked to senior BBC executives, and they tell me they personally think it’s wrong to expose lies told by a British prime minister because it undermines trust in British politics. Is that a reason for giving Johnson free rein to make any false claim he wants?"

Songsofexperience · 18/11/2019 22:00

That quote from the BBC exec only shows how the beeb thinks it's ok to infantilise its audience.

Thanksgiving2019 · 18/11/2019 22:04

Thank you to all the knowledge measured posters on these threads.

I have a speculative question. IF BJ fails to
Keep his seat (please let this happen) who do you think would become the leader of the Tories?

Hoooo · 18/11/2019 22:18

Gove

prettybird · 18/11/2019 22:19

"I have talked to senior BBC executives, and they tell me they personally think it’s wrong to expose lies told by a British prime minister because it undermines trust in British politics." (Peter Oborne).

Those BBC executives are sooooo wrong ShockConfusedAngry It is a Prime Minister who habitually lies unchallenged which. is. what. undermines. trust. in. British. politics. AngrySad

SwedishEdith · 18/11/2019 22:21

who do you think would become the leader of the Tories?

Well, shouldn't it be Hunt? 😁 After all, they can't really go through another leadership contest? Who is the deputy leader - I've lost track.

HesterThrale · 18/11/2019 22:21

Good question, @Thanksgiving2019. I’m not sure a party leader has to be an MP; Nicola Sturgeon isn’t one, I don’t think. However, he could no longer be PM or sit in the House.

Alsohuman · 18/11/2019 22:29

They’d have to run another leadership contest, surely? After all the fuss about May’s “coronation”, they couldn’t do it again.

Hoooo · 18/11/2019 22:30

A party leader can be a lord I think?

Lord farage???????

Hoooo · 18/11/2019 22:30

Ew.

I felt dirty just typing that.

Off to wash my hands Halloween Envy

UK Election 2019 - History says the polls are wrong!

Hoooo · 18/11/2019 22:33

Polls...

Pppfffttt.

Sooooo reliable!

God, I sound just like my 11 year old 😂😂

Apileofballyhoo · 18/11/2019 22:35

talked to senior BBC executives, and they tell me they personally think it’s wrong to expose lies told by a British prime minister because it undermines trust in British politics

And undermines trust in MSM. Which is extremely dangerous.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2019 22:38

"IF BJ fails to keep his seat (please let this happen) who do you think would become the leader of the Tories?"

Sadly unlikely, but my thoughts - maybe totally wrong Grin- :

The current Cabinet - who remain as caretaker ministers until replaced by a new PM - would choose a "temporary" leader, possibly JRM - if he keeps his own seat - since JRM is reportedly acting as BJ's deputy.

BJ's fate depends on whether the Tories have a majority and if so, what size
With a 30+ working majority, he might - and only might - be given a very safe seat, with the former occupant boosted to the Lords

Ditto if no new govt can be formed and hence there is a 2nd GE within a month - no time for a contest

Otherwise, any less than a Tory majority of 30 and imo he would be replaced

With a smaller majority, JRM would stay in place while MPs decide the new leader & PM by "coronation" without a contest,
to prevent the start of the new govt being made even more chaotic and embarassing by a contest for PM

  • remember that the clock will be ticking away to 31 December 2020 and the end of transition

If other parties form a govt, then there would be a formal Tory leadership contest

Replacement for BJ would depend on whether Tory MPs have had a sufficient fright to move away from the hard right - in which case they would probably choose a rising but safe star, e.g. Tom Tugenhadt

If not, then likely JRM or even Raab < double shudder >

totally agree apile - lies told by ANYONE in a position of power, potential or otherwise should be exposed. oh wait, isnt this how we got into this position?
