Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

I condemn both Labour anti-semitism and Tory Islamophobia, as racism

And yet you still advocate voting for a Labour party that you condemn as racist? So what is the practical effect of that condemnation? Because it looks like the consequence is ... absolutely nothing.

I might be meeting the local labour candidate this week...

Tanith · 18/11/2019 16:40

"The Tories are making completely uncosted and unrealistic spending commitments, too. "

The thing is, we've seen Labour pledges being properly implemented.
For example, they originally brought in the free Early Years entitlement (then called the Nursery Education Grant) and, the way they implemented it, it really was free. No top-ups, no extra charges, free at the point of delivery.

Contrast that with the Conservative promise of 30 hours free entitlement. It's not free. Parents are being charged extras and top-ups and providers have gone out of business trying to subsidise the impossible. It was the Conservatives that promised more than they could deliver.

Christ....

BackInTime · 18/11/2019 17:11

@ListeningQuietly Exactly, so much time spent analysing what might be but how much of it is realistically likely to be implemented. It is like DH & I suddenly jacking in our jobs with no idea what we might do next and then both making outlandish spending plans with no idea where the money might come to pay for it all...unless we get in debt up to our eyeballs.

Fuck business indeed.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/11/2019 17:19

unless we get in debt up to our eyeballs.

We already are, theyve borrowed £1 trillion in the time theyve been in office and what as a country do we have to show for it, nothing, not a fucking thing, so where has that money gone except into the pockets of already wealthy people.

Condemning only Labour anti-semitism and refusing to condemn Tory Islamophobia means no point in engaging directly with that poster

Lewis Goodall@lewis_goodall

My sense is the story of this election could well be low turnout.

Substantial interest but little enthusiasm from the public about the party leaders.

Bad weather.
Despair at politics.

Question will be who can motivate enough of their bases/is more scared of the other side.^

Spent two weeks on the road now.
Travelled 700 miles.
Lots of different places.
Overwhelming impression?

The voters are deeply unhappy with the choice they’re being asked to make.

They don’t much like either of the major parties, nor Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn.

< and yet, the smaller parties on the left, right & centre are being squeezed. Will we see many Independents being elected - Tory & Labour rebels ? >

I saw that one too. Its a cracker.

I've also had some very odd anti EU posts on my FB feed - like an Avaaz petition about the EU taking away certain rights
that they were never going to
and friends shared it without checking the source 'legislation'

More like you can't answer the question because you know how devastating it is for your supposedly "principled" position. If people want to vote for the antisemitic Labour Party, then that's their right, but they should acknowledge the reality of exactly what it is they're doing.

ListeningQuietly · 18/11/2019 17:55

Small parts of the Labour party are anti Semitic
Large parts of the Tory party are Islamophobic
All of UKIP are racist
All of the Brexit party are anti immigrant

I sleep soundly with my choices

DGRossetti · 18/11/2019 17:58

the story of this election could well be low turnout.

Does a shrinking turnout have any significance for any particular side, or does it just make the margins so small as to be chaotic ?

CendrillonSings · 18/11/2019 17:59

The voters are deeply unhappy with the choice they’re being asked to make.

They don’t much like either of the major parties, nor Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn.

Except that every piece of data from every polling company gives much higher leadership ratings to Boris, and much higher voting intention figures to the Tories. Corbyn's leadership ratings with Ipsos Mori, who have been asking the same question since 1977, have him as the most unpopular opposition leader in the history of their polling series.

So naturally Lewis tries to pretend that it's all equal, when the facts show it really isn't.

ListeningQuietly · 18/11/2019 18:02

Cendrillon
Do you have anything positive and constructive to add to the discussion about the future of this country after Brexit
or is your job just to fill the threads with anti Corbyn diatribes
just in case I might actually need to read one of your posts one day

bellinisurge · 18/11/2019 18:03

"Small parts of the Labour party are anti Semitic

Ah yes, the "acceptable " amount of antisemitism that a supposedly social justice focussed party is permitted to have.

Alsohuman · 18/11/2019 18:04

Does a shrinking turnout have any significance for any particular side, or does it just make the margins so small as to be chaotic ?

It used to be that low turnout benefitted the Tories but with the huge rise in young people registering to vote that may change. Especially as they’re the ones least likely to be affected by weather, etc.
