Westminstenders: The Non-Pact Pact

RedToothBrush · 12/11/2019 00:23

The Brexit Party and the Conservatives have agreed a trumpian pact to no deal. Led by the ERG.

They don't want you to know its a pact because the Conservatives still want One Nation Conservatives types to believe they are still One Nation Conservatives, simply because they say they are. They are not.

The Brexit Party won't stand any candidates in a Conservative held seat. But don't be surprised if there isn't more Non-Pact tactical stepping aside. This of course won't be a Pact. Cos the Brexit Party say its not. And the Conservative Party say its not.

The Liberal Democrats, Plaid and the Greens are in an electoral pact. They say they are in an electoral pact and have published a list.

Meanwhile the Labour Party isn't in a Pact. But there is still talk that in key seats that someone (either the LDs or Labour) should stand aside to try and deseat key Conservatives. This won't happen because the Lib Dems and Labour are not in a pact. And when they say they are not in a pact they aren't.

If after an election we have a hung parliament then either the Conservatives or Labour who are not in a pact and say they will never be in a pact, will try and woo someone to a kingmaker and be in government with them, probably on a supply and demand basis rather than coalition. They'll deny this but we kind of know how this goes...

Liberation usually signifies a bit dodgy?!?!

Icantreachthepretzels · 14/11/2019 16:36

Nigel had tweeted that Boris' chief strategic adviser is offering jobs to brexit party candidates if they step aside. He is incensed because the whole system is corrupt (he says).

Will be interesting to see what the tories say in response to this - as this is either a flat out lie, or they have been exposed as being both corrupt and running scared of the BXP.

It's interesting that Farage is now turning on the tories so absolutely (i mean I know he always hated them - but in the past few weeks he has been trying to pretend like they could work together) - it's almost as if he is actively trying to encourage his supporters not to bother voting. Which to me just proves he is just a shit stirrer out to cause trouble and fuck up the system - and has never cared two hoots about brexit. It was just his rabble rousing du jour - now that's past its sell by date he's moved on to trying to annihilate voter turnout and stick a spoke in the democratic wheel that way.

*Libertarion ffs

tobee · 14/11/2019 16:37

Liberation = burning your bra!

Hoooo · 14/11/2019 16:38

Alwsys makes me think of dodgy types too tobee

Peregrina · 14/11/2019 16:43

Our list of candidates is not up yet... should be by 5pm.

The Cuban Missile crisis was the Sixties....

The Seventies were good for me - I went to University, at at time when a lot of women didn't, (despite my headmistress telling me I would never get there), got married, started a family.........

Hoooo · 14/11/2019 16:48

Midsile crisis was 62 wasn't it?

Peregrina · 14/11/2019 16:48

Spoke too soon, it's now up - Tory, LD, Labour, Brexit Party.
I think that should usefully siphon off some Tory votes (fingers crossed). Although UKIP had a particularly piss-poor result last time, losing their deposit IIRC.

Alsohuman · 14/11/2019 16:50

In our safe Tory seat we have

Conservative
Labour (the only local candidate)
LibDem
Green
Independent Brexiteer - who I assume was ripped off by Farage

missclimpson · 14/11/2019 16:51

I think the seventies felt like a time when our political activism could make a difference. We were living in the People's Republic of South Yorkshire though.

derxa · 14/11/2019 16:52

Our Con candidate in the election replaces a lovely moderate Tory.
She's described as an 'ardent Brexiteer' Angry I'm hoping the Lib Dems give her a fright.

DGRossetti · 14/11/2019 16:53

Did anyone see Rich Halls Red Scare documentary last week ? Covered the missile crisis, briefly (although I was intrigued it made no mention of Gary Powers/U2 ...).

There's a great audio-visual display at RAF Cosford about the missile crisis, and cold war. They have a MIG that defected in the 70s. And for nerdy nerds like myself, the heartbreaking sight of a Nimrod with it's wings folded and all the wires cut Sad. Vandalism.

missclimpson · 14/11/2019 16:57

I remember being terrified by the missile crisis. I was twelve I think. We were in the art room at school when the end was meant to be nigh and everybody prayed. (Not that I thought it would do any goid).

Apileofballyhoo · 14/11/2019 16:58

derxa your post about last night's wine made me laugh! I hope you don't get stuck with the Brexiteer.

missclimpson · 14/11/2019 16:58

... good, even

derxa · 14/11/2019 17:01

derxa your post about last night's wine made me laugh! Grin Well I'm not laughing today and have a stinking hangover. What was I thinking.
Brexit is driving me to drink

Peregrina · 14/11/2019 17:01

We were living in the People's Republic of South Yorkshire though.

I lived there for a couple of years - a well regulated cheap bus service is what I most remember.

It was a time of the Woman's Movement - we definitely thought we could achieve change.

Peregrina · 14/11/2019 17:09

Wantage has a Tory parachuted in from London. Since it's a bit of a pig with a blue rosette constituency he might still win.......

RedToothBrush · 14/11/2019 17:10

Steven Swinford@steven_swinford
Brexit Party's Rupert Lowe has just PULLED his nomination, less than 24 hours after putting papers in

He says it is 'highly conceivable' his candidacy would split the Leave vote

This matters for the Brexit Party - it's the 2nd most marginal Labour seat in England

Dudley North.

Key seat.

mybrainhurtsalot · 14/11/2019 17:11

We have:

Labour
Lib Dem
Green
Conservative
UKIP

It is a Con held seat but a target for Labour - we’ve had lots of Labour leaflets already and the candidate knocked on our door a few Fridays ago. We had Con canvasser too apparently - my husband answered the door.

Last time if all the green voters had voted Labour the seat would have turned. So disappointing the parties couldn’t agree to cooperate for this one crucial election.

Icantreachthepretzels · 14/11/2019 17:13

I might be completely off on this - but I thought you were in Scotland derxa?
Is a brexiteer tory likely to do well there? Even in a toryish area?

tobee · 14/11/2019 17:15

Where about roughly are you Peregrina?

ClashCityRocker · 14/11/2019 17:15

We have labour, lib dem and con.

Con got 51% share of vote last time and I'm not expecting that to change.

Apileofballyhoo · 14/11/2019 17:15

Brexit is driving me to drink

It's an utter disaster. The thing that drives me mad is that Conservatives are supposed to be conservative, but this current lot are planning to make huge changes literally overnight. Real conservatives would be making any changes to membership of the EU as slowly and painlessly as possible. Conservative my arse.

sovielverloren · 14/11/2019 17:17

Can I ask where best to check who the candidates are for a constituency? Did a google on the train and the page I found says only Tory, LD and Brexit Party. Sounds good but want to be sure. A massive conservative majority to overcome but definitely worth fighting for in this scenario.
If there are official sources you could point to i'd be most grateful!
