Westminstenders: The Non-Pact Pact

RedToothBrush · 12/11/2019 00:23

The Brexit Party and the Conservatives have agreed a trumpian pact to no deal. Led by the ERG.

They don't want you to know its a pact because the Conservatives still want One Nation Conservatives types to believe they are still One Nation Conservatives, simply because they say they are. They are not.

The Brexit Party won't stand any candidates in a Conservative held seat. But don't be surprised if there isn't more Non-Pact tactical stepping aside. This of course won't be a Pact. Cos the Brexit Party say its not. And the Conservative Party say its not.

The Liberal Democrats, Plaid and the Greens are in an electoral pact. They say they are in an electoral pact and have published a list.

Meanwhile the Labour Party isn't in a Pact. But there is still talk that in key seats that someone (either the LDs or Labour) should stand aside to try and deseat key Conservatives. This won't happen because the Lib Dems and Labour are not in a pact. And when they say they are not in a pact they aren't.

If after an election we have a hung parliament then either the Conservatives or Labour who are not in a pact and say they will never be in a pact, will try and woo someone to a kingmaker and be in government with them, probably on a supply and demand basis rather than coalition. They'll deny this but we kind of know how this goes...

If you want the Tories to win, why would you be bothered about Remainer Tories returning to the Tory fold ? Hmm

Swinson's idiocy is going to let in a lot of Tories, by siphoning off votes from Labour Remain candidates who would otherwise win

So Tories would be cheering on Swinson to split the Remain vote

Understandable for an ex-tory to vote LDem if you have a Momentum activist parachuted in,
but not if you have a good moderate local Labour MP who has been valuable in the HoC

e.g. Rosie Duffield gave the best HoC speech I can remember on domestic abuse - the best because she is a survivor from it,
unlike other MPs who may have been well-intentioned, but were talking about what to them was a theoretical ill.

The LDems are only just recovering from the anger over student fees
If Swinson's arrogance and blatant party politics lets in a hard right Tory govt, that carries out a v hard Brexit and rolls back workers rights, the LDems will be damned for the next 2-3 generations

I have voted before for them, but I would certainly never forgive their arrogant stupidity.

They would permanently lose the votes of many Remainers, plus many on the centre and left, if Swinson just chases ex-Tories and tells everyone else to fuck off

@Ellie56 Because being nice or makeing an alliance guarantees she will be eaten alive?

Jo does come across as pigheaded and I have an entire dictionary of swearwords for their trans stance, but in all fairness, she is following the manifesto and promises made at the Lib Dem conference.

CendrillonSings · 13/11/2019 12:41

She’s not submitting to Brexit because she thinks it will destroy the country, and she’s not submitting to Corbynite Labour because she thinks it will destroy the country.

Admirably principled, no?

BigChocFrenzy · 13/11/2019 12:42

I very much hope the SNP win Swinson's seat

We need to get rid of leaders who put party politics before the country
After Uxbrisdge, her seat is the one I'll be most watching and hoping for an upset.

There’s no such thing as a “moderate local Labour MP” - they’ll make Corbyn PM and vote through all his socialist nonsense just the same as any other Labour MP.

ContinuityError · 13/11/2019 12:46

It’s worth noting that no undergraduates will have been old enough to vote in the Ref

Many of those that are on 4+ yr courses will have been able to vote in the referendum - so medicine / dentistry / vet med, integrated masters etc and final year undergrads in Scotland (plus third year undergrads that took a year out).

TheABC · 13/11/2019 12:46

Johnson's walkabouts have cheered me up. It's good to know I am not the only one who thinks so little of him.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/11/2019 12:47

No, she's putting party politics before the country
We've had enough of that

The Tories cheering her on should be a guide as to what will happen:
splitting the remainer vote and letting in a hard right Tory govt

JustAnotherPoster00 · 13/11/2019 12:48

She’s not submitting to Brexit because she thinks it will destroy the country

She's likely to cause it with this level of foolishness, I think in her head and because of the EU elections she thinks she can get a majority or at least be the 2nd party in the HOC

BigChocFrenzy · 13/11/2019 12:49

When you find Tories who keep propogandising for the Tories on all threads they go on,
then cheering for a politican of another party,
THINK WHY

CendrillonSings · 13/11/2019 12:50

No, she's putting party politics before the country. We've had enough of that

Oh, we have, have we? How many Labour candidates is Corbyn standing down in seats that are winnable for other opposition parties?

Let me check... oh, it’s zero. Zero.

So tell me - why is the Great Comrade exempt from your moralising strictures about putting party politics above country?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 13/11/2019 12:52

My own a opinion on Swinson, Tories gona Tory

borntobequiet · 13/11/2019 12:52

Well that's it. I'm voting Labour.

borntobequiet · 13/11/2019 12:56

And I've just called LD HQ and given them an earful.

Frankiestein402 · 13/11/2019 12:56

If there is foreign interference or a cabal of the wealthy attempting to manipulate the state then its not partial to call them out - nothing in the civil service code to prevent that.

We went to bed as great Britain, woke as little Britain,
repeat - whenever/wherever possible - because it sure won't come up on R4, BBC news, QT etc.

Mistigri · 13/11/2019 12:57

I thought Guy Kiddey's letter was very good and the bit about people wanting the abuse and tirades to stop rang very true.

I'm unfollowing a lot of people on twitter because of silly partisan politicking and pretty fed up with it on here too. There are good people in all the parties and the idea that "you can't trust a Lib Dem" as someone posted up thread is incredibly insulting to LD members or supporters on here like Peregrina.

Honestly, what with the insane bickering over party personalities on here and the infantile hard right emojifest that is the Brexit arms, you all deserve what is coming. I'll be in London to see the aftermath on the 13th but am feeling increasingly emotionally detached from it all.

dreichwinter · 13/11/2019 12:58

I worked for a few years in the area of Yorkshire Johnson is in.
As ex mining areas decimated by mine closures and then opioid issues it's right that Johnson is getting a hard time.

I entirely agree with this. I think she is in for a shock.
