To feel so fucking depressed and angry about brexit?

I'm Scottish. I voted to remain. It feels like nothing I vote for matters. I despise Farage and Johnstone. I despise the call for sovereignty certain parts of England still believe in. I despise of the right wing media.

I really feel this country is fucked, unless you have money behind you and beside you.

The thing is, there's a point where we'll all have to vote to make ourselves poorer if we're serious about climate change and lifting people out of global poverty. The world simply doesn't have enough resources to sustain the lifestyles we have.

derxa · 12/11/2019 15:51

My cousin lost hundreds of ewes and lambs in the Beast From The East snow. It brought him to near bankruptcy. Us farmers have most to lose from No Deal. We voted Remain and No to independence. He says 'Fuck It! Whatever will be will be now. All these people saying they have to leave the country actually give me the rage.

Mistigri · 12/11/2019 16:12

" I’m saying that uncontrolled immigration brings problems with it."

  1. Migration is not "uncontrolled" and suggesting it is, is about as racist as that Farage poster (ie very).
  1. Name the problems, tell us the extent to which they are caused by migration, and we'll be able to judge the extent to which your opinion has a factual basis as opposed to a racist one.

Lexiter my arse.

Danetobe · 12/11/2019 16:25

No I don't in the Brexit context. Obviously the government can already control migration wrt the labour market. Wages, identity etc, I don't understand what Brexit will add tbh

Danetobe · 12/11/2019 16:26

Identity checks that should be.

Lexitleft · 12/11/2019 16:28

Bit lofty there aren’t you Misti

Sorry - this serf isn’t snapping to your tune. If you genuinely can’t see how an influx of low skilled workers impacts on other low skilled workers then you and I aren’t going to see eye to eye on this. It is a mystery to me how people can’t see this, quite honestly. It increases competition over housing, public services, space, just about everything.

Mistigri · 12/11/2019 16:37

I love to see left wingers effectively telling Windrush victims that they are in fact victims of "uncontrolled migration".

Songsofexperience · 12/11/2019 16:39

It increases competition over housing, public services, space, just about everything.

The answer to that is investment in infrastructures. Brexit will make that much harder and another 5 years of Tories will make it impossible.
Let's remain and look after the country, FINALLY.

DustyDiamond · 12/11/2019 16:44

The hand wringing and the disbelief on here comes from a kind of spoilt anger.

Yep

The article linked to earlier about Brexit Anxiety Disorder pretty much nailed it.

To still be regurgitating the tedious, tired, done to fucking death arguments and insults of 2016 is beyond boring now.

I used to be bothered by the unfair & untrue generalisations & character assassinations of Leave voters but now I don't give a fuck.

Hysterical attacks on people who merely exercised their right to vote in a democracy is entitlement at its extreme.

Lexitleft · 12/11/2019 16:45

Except no one is talking about Windrush (except you.) This is FOM, which has a disproportionately negative impact on the poor.

Songs, no, ta. I don’t want every single field built on, every road disappearing under traffic, a school on every street.

DrCoconut · 12/11/2019 16:46

Our present MP is the victim of a nasty hate campaign on social media at the minute. The local idiots blame him for Brexit not having happened because "that's what we voted him in to do". He voted yes to article 50 but won't back no deal or Boris's deal, for context. They will all vote for the tories or the Brexit party for sure 😫. If we leave the EU with a Tory or Brexit party MP and their livelihoods go down the pan (local industry is on the edge of survival as it is) and the benefits system is cut right back (to prevent "scroungers") who will they blame when they are cold and hungry with no help available? The EU will say "nothing to do with us", because it won't be, and The MP won't care as he will be a millionaire. There is no reasoning with them so I've given up trying.

Mistigri · 12/11/2019 16:48

I'm talking about Windrush because you are dog whistling about "uncontrolled migration" but won't say what you mean.

Lexitleft · 12/11/2019 16:49

I just have. Freedom of movement. I’m quite surprised you think that was dog-whistling when I said quite clearly above ‘fom disproportionately impacts on the poorest.’

SweetSummerchild · 12/11/2019 17:12

This is FOM, which has a disproportionately negative impact on the poor.

Agree 100%. I remember politicians discussing how FOM was driving up housing costs and driving down wages back in the Blair/Brown years.

Can someone remind me when it was that Brown muttered the infamous ’bigoted woman’ under his breath? I don’t honk the word ‘austerity’ was even in the MN dictionary then.

ArseDarkly · 12/11/2019 17:17

DrCoconut - remember a social media hate campaign only represents a small proportion of idiots - don't lose hope!

DustyDiamond · 12/11/2019 17:49

Can someone remind me when it was that Brown muttered the infamous ’bigoted woman’ under his breath?

It was 28th April 2010.

MN folklore has it that Gillian Duffy from Rochdale was indeed a bigoted woman, who 'ranted incessantly about immigrants' to Gordon Brown.

The truth (as ever) is rather different to MN's collective memory.

In a 4 & half minute conversation with Gordon Brown, Gillian mentioned immigrants once, 2 & half mins into the conversation.

Her exact words:

"You can't say anything about the immigrants because you're saying that you're … but all these eastern European what are coming in, where are they flocking from?"

....and that was it. The sum total of her 'rant about immigrants' comprised 26 words...

ArseDarkly · 12/11/2019 17:52

I for one am suffering ennui at the fact we can never have a thread to discuss our feelings about what is a seismic shift in our future expectations, without clever dicks coming on to sneer. We’re allowed our feelings

Corrected. And agreed - they really cannot stand to hear the truth that Brexit is a disaster

Danetobe · 12/11/2019 17:56

The UK gov have prioritised the economy over the wellbeing of the population for at least 40 years, including issues relating to migration. Brexit or remain ain't gonna change that.

SweetSummerchild · 12/11/2019 17:57

Thank you for that DustyDiamond.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 12/11/2019 18:01

....and that was it. The sum total of her 'rant about immigrants' comprised 26 words...

how many words before it becomes a coherent argument?

UserX · 12/11/2019 18:05

I’m struggling to understand why Blair is responsible for FOM going unchecked? Tories were in power from 2010 and had plenty of time to implement controls.

As per usual this thread has devolved into leavers beating their drums (Germany bad!) and blowing their dog whistles. Very likely Lexitleft has money in hedge funds because I can’t see an other reason for defending brexit so staunchly.

ArseDarkly · 12/11/2019 18:06

Danetobe I don't think that's true at all - after 9+ years of austerity we are still massively in debt

UserX · 12/11/2019 18:08

The UK gov have prioritised the economy over the wellbeing of the population for at least 40 years, including issues relating to migration. Brexit or remain ain't gonna change that.

The economy and the well being of the people are the same thing. What governments have actually prioritized is corporations and the rich.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 12/11/2019 18:09

UKIP founded 1993

Blair became PM in 1997

Xenophobia in England has always been a thing. Irish immigrants used to get it. The windrush generation got it.

Lexitleft · 12/11/2019 18:14

I wish I had money in hedge funds. Actually, any money at all would be good.

I am honestly not coming here with the intention to sneer. My stance is a fairly straightforward and unremarkable one, though and it isn’t rooted in xenophobia, it’s a simple recognition of the fact that the beneficiaries of FOM and the EU generally are middle class.

Tony Benn, Frank Field, Corbyn himself are or were eurosceptic. You do not need to have money in a hedge fund to be wary about the EU.
