To feel so fucking depressed and angry about brexit?

I'm Scottish. I voted to remain. It feels like nothing I vote for matters. I despise Farage and Johnstone. I despise the call for sovereignty certain parts of England still believe in. I despise of the right wing media.

I really feel this country is fucked, unless you have money behind you and beside you.

I don't know if MIL is racist, per se, but she's certainly anti-immigrant. She voted Remain.

I believe also that 4% of UKIP voters also voted Remain - which seems a very contradictory stance.

Since the EU citizens couldn't vote in the Referendum, unless they were also Irish or Commonwealth citizens, then whether they were racist or not hardly affected the vote.

Clavinova · 12/11/2019 12:37

The EMA move was dismissed because 840 staff out of 900 were EU citizens, forgetting that they could have UK spouses and UK born children.

True, but if 9 month/2 year/5 year contracts are usual then employees should expect some uncertainty and flexibility.

No one is saying that you have to settle here for most of your working life and have children to be accepted here.

I didn't mention anything about being accepted - the pp's suggestion was that children were being unhappily displaced, rather than taking advantage of a opportunity to experience life in Amsterdam for a few years - "Children had no choice in becoming emigrants. Leavers did that to them."

I thought taking advantage of living in another EU country was supposed to be a benefit of membership - only if you are a singleton or children are off your hands it seems.

Somewhat ironic though.

Peregrina · 12/11/2019 12:45

To explain it simply to the likes of Clavinova - it's not as easy as implied. I know at least 10 families where one partner is an EU citizen, usually the wife, in the cases I know. They moved here in good faith, and had children here. The British partner is not forced to be able to just up sticks and go and work in another country, for some the language would be the biggest barrier.

Clavinova · 12/11/2019 12:45

an opportunity

Peregrina · 12/11/2019 12:50

Yes, an opportunity, but one which needs some thought and preparation.

Clavinova · 12/11/2019 12:50

*The British partner is not forced to be able to just up sticks and go and work in another country, for some the language would be the biggest barrier.^

Indeed - free movement of people not so free and easy after all!

I dont understand this sentiment. You do understand that when you vote, so does everybody else and it's not a certainty that what you vote for wins?

I’m perfectly calm, thank-you Trewser, though I note the continued efforts to police the emotions of others. . Not sure why you are so riled up about the feelings of remainers when you are getting want you want, tbh, but 🤷‍♀️

MrPan · 12/11/2019 13:59

OP - yes it's just dreadful. We are the stupidest nation in the world. Ever. No other peoples have actually voted to make themselves poorer.

Brexit? There is a bunch of politicos on the right wing arguing what Brexit is. Tories say quite different to Labour/BXP.
Yet we are also told that people knew what they were voting for.

Did they hell.

MrPan · 12/11/2019 14:07

No, austerity was a LARGE part of it, from interviews I recall from the time. It was a chance to give a bloody nose to the 'elite'. Not realising of course that the 'elite' you will end up with will be even more elitist.

ArseDarkly · 12/11/2019 14:08

No other peoples have actually voted to make themselves poorer.

They might not have known that's what they were doing, but many many peoples have been led down the path to the theft of their country by corrupt governments as well as being ruined by pointless wars.

I wonder how many of those peoples still continued to worship their dear leader and believe in all their lies, even after all the devastation, because they just couldn't face the truth?

LexitLeft · 12/11/2019 14:15

There has been a growing surge of euroscepticism for decades now.

Austerity may well have exacerbated concerns but it was by no means the only factor. However, simply put, it there is less to go around, it stands to reason that resentments will grow.

Mistigri · 12/11/2019 14:26

You may as well have written “Tough-Shit For Them”. People get that message loud and clear, and they take note.
They don’t count/It wasn’t that bad/they had it coming.

Same attitude towards Britons in Europe tbf. They don't give a shit.

KenDodd · 12/11/2019 14:34

I agree. Certain politicians have been pointing the finger at foreigners for years, saying it's all their fault, your problems are all down to immigrants, it's never, ever our fault.
Can't get a doctor's appointment- blame a foreigner.
Can't get a school place- blame a foreigner.
Crime - blame a foreigner.

Mistigri · 12/11/2019 14:36

Not racist in the slightest though

KenDodd · 12/11/2019 14:36

They don't give a shit.

Even worse. I have yet to meet a leave voter who gives a single shit about a return to violence in NI.

KenDodd · 12/11/2019 14:38

No, sorry, that's wrong. There was one on here once. A real no deal hard Brexiteer who said that peace and the GRA were more important and if one of them had to go it had to be Brexit. Peace is more important.

LexitLeft · 12/11/2019 15:04

That’s the thing Ken.

There are winners and losers in all aspects of politics.

I’m certainly not ‘blaming foreigners’ Hmm I’m saying that uncontrolled immigration brings problems with it.

Mistigri · 12/11/2019 15:09

You mean problems like this?

^Can't get a doctor's appointment- blame a foreigner.
Can't get a school place- blame a foreigner.
Crime - blame a foreigner^

ArseDarkly · 12/11/2019 15:12

But if we accept that the country is currently in a damaged state after years of austerity, the last thing anyone needs is the uncertainty of Brexit, where we have no idea what effect it will have on us.

Danetobe · 12/11/2019 15:27

WTF is 'controlled migration'?

Controlled by the market? By the government? To what end?

Dissimilitude · 12/11/2019 15:35

@Danetobe

Are you being deliberately obtuse? So is your position that anyone who wants to come and live here should be able to do so?

To what end? Honestly, what on earth do you think would happen if we had completely unrestricted migration? Can you not imagine any downsides to that?

LexitLeft · 12/11/2019 15:39

Do you really not know what controller migration is Dane, honestly?
