There are signs that traditional party alignment might well have broken.

The Tories have split, labour are pretending they have not.

The pattern so far seems to be closely following the EU. This favours a Tory majority.

A long way to go.

Continuity, genuinely, I've come across this once or twice at work and it's the science equivalent of a commodities trader lecturing trade experts on GATT. As with trade, no one is an expert on everything; it's a body of work; "disagreeing with the mathematical models" begs the question "which models" and "what is the physical basis of your objections" (climate models use maths but they are of course models of actual physical processes; they are not just numbers).

Few non specialists would seriously entertain the idea of holding an opinion on other highly complex scientific topics (hence my Higgs Boson comment); the only reason they do so on climate is because it is politicised.

It's almost always men too, often people who are highly expert in their own small field.

The most depressing thing is reading this thread and nodding my head along to the attacks on both Corbyn and Swinson (Boris, it goes without saying) and thinking 'Yep, that's a fair point...'

I will vote tactically to keep the tories out (as much as I can do...) but jesus fucking christ, what I wouldn't give for a leader I believed in, rather than someone who will possibly, hopefully, maybe, fuck the country the least.

thecatfromjapan · 10/11/2019 20:00

More tactical vote news.

I'm still not brave enough to post it in AIBU.

I really think I'll need to drink a glass of whisky to do it.

But I'm going to have to be bold at some point ...

Being an outlier doesn't mean it's wrong. Which has the best method?

One of my small professional successes over the last five years has been being an outlier whose forecast turned out to be substantially better than everyone else's!

thecatfromjapan · 10/11/2019 20:08

Indeed, Misti.

I'm just passing on news ...

England’s National Health Service is mired in “perpetual winter” as the general election campaign begins, with performance sharply deteriorating against important targets such as waiting times for emergency departments and cancer treatment

Clegg sold the farm for a handful of magic beans. It is a minor political miracle the Libs have managed to shake off the responsibility for all this shit they facilitated.

Mistigri · 10/11/2019 20:11

Ah sorry about the mess, the Mumsnet app won't let me see posts properly before I post them :(

Mistigri they are both PhD geoscientists, one worked in climate research and the other in predictive petrophysical modelling. I’m sure neither have a particular view on the Higgs Boson because they are not nuclear physicists. One has questioned the modelling coming out of JPL because he was based there for a while - does that meet your bar?

Mistigri · 10/11/2019 20:18

Continuity, in that case it's more a question of put up or shut up; this is an argument that can and should play out in peer reviewed journals.

WeshMaGueule · 10/11/2019 20:25

teaching kids to obey authority

Presumably unless that authority is the fire bridage Hmm

TatianaLarina · 10/11/2019 20:25

It is a minor political miracle the Libs have managed to shake off the responsibility for all this shit they facilitated.

Desperation begets strange fish.

thecatfromjapan · 10/11/2019 20:28

And Jolyon Maugham on Twitter is taking issue with the Gina Miller site ...

🤦‍♀️ Nothing is going to save us from that Johnson majority ...

ContinuityError · 10/11/2019 20:36

Misti one is a mathematical modeller that doesn’t work directly in that field and the other one works in a sensitive position. They won’t publish anything.

And as I said, neither deny climate change, they just question the mathematical models.

Am rather behind on the thread but I think
ALL NEED THIS

Lack of actual, real places to meet - for free & in the warm - is a factor in food bank use and food poverty

www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk/2019/11/we-ve-missed-important-reason-why-people-are-going-hungry-britain

Honestly, that book on 'The New Enclosures' needs to be written.

thecatfromjapan · 10/11/2019 21:03

🙂 @Listening

DGRossetti · 10/11/2019 21:13

The forgotten referendum of 2011 wasn't for a form of PR though

During the campaign, I encountered people who were going to vote against because it wasn't the PR they wanted. Their logic (and I use that word incorrectly) was that by rejecting Alternative Vote, they'd ensure true PR was on the ballot next time.

DGRossetti · 10/11/2019 21:15

Clegg should have demanded PR as the first bill to be passed, without a referendum

But we did get the FTPA ...

tobee · 10/11/2019 21:17

Hooo Grin

Mistigri · 10/11/2019 21:21

Nothing is going to save us from that Johnson majority ...

Tbh with a double figure lead that is going to grow as the BXP minnow gets gobbled up by the bigger blue fish, I think this observation is correct with or without 4 (or is it 5 now?) different tactical voting recommendations.

dreichwinter · 10/11/2019 21:23

I do think the last couple of threads highlight what a totally inane idea Brexit is.
If such a wide range of people who disagree about so much can come together to clearly state that Brexit is is shocking idea, then it really is a truly shocking idea.
