Westminstenders: Dissolved.

Parliament has formally been dissolved. We are now officially in an election period including purdah and spending limits. Not that all the parties haven't got campaign material out already to bypass the rules, making the rules a complete farce. And the government has made some very dodgy adverts about the fund for towns, 90% of which just happen to be marginals.

The Tory Campaign has got off to an interesting start with a dead cat dog whistle against Grenfell where many well educated people lived (Inc an architect), privately owned their property and just happened to be white. And fast asleep. I'm not sure about you but I don't tend to have huge amounts of 'common sense' when I'm snoring.

Apologies have of course been made. In true Trumpian / Bannon style. But the whistle was blown and made its desired point to its target audience. Expect many more examples before we get to the end of this campaign.

Of course the same day it was made public that the government have blocked the publication of a report into Russian Electoral Interference. Which is in no way connected to the massive amount of donations the Tory Party has been receiving lately and who Boris Johnson hangs out with.

This election is all about breaking 'The Red Wall' and the Tories taking Northern seats. So everyone between Birmingham and Cumbria is going to be particularly fed up by 12th December at people from London coming out with ridiculous stereotypes, and telling them how to vote. We await Corbyn and Johnson adopting flat caps and vowels whilst drinking a pint of bitter or mild.

As usual we've had the candidate selection process throw up a few curve balls including forcing cabinet minister Alun Cairns to resign as Welsh Secretary on the day the tories launch their campaign. Its become very clear from the list of Tory MPs who aren't standing that the party has officially split and 'one nation conservatism' is merely now a slogan Johnson throws around to pretend that the hard right of the party hasn't slung out or forced out all the moderates. On the Labour side we have the usual rows at factions in local parties fighting or being really upset at a London candidate being parachuted in.

Farage isn't standing but the Brexit Party apparently is, despite calls for an electoral pact with the Tories. Whether local parties get the memo from Leave.eu and CCHQ we will find out in time. The LDs, Greens and Plaid seem to be consolidating a Remain pact in some seats but this still splits the vote with Labour which will be a problem in some areas.

Johnson is apparently standing in Uxbridge. This does leave us with the possibility he could yet lose his seat. Swinson's seat is also far from a safe one. Corbyn will likely be safe but Islington did back the LDs as the 1st Party at the Euros with the assistance of some very pissed off Labour members.

Nothing is certain about the next 6 weeks apart from the fact it will throw up some shocks and leave us all shouting at the telly at some point.

I could live with the sort of Brexit Labour might negotiate tbh.

I bet you could - you live in France - the rest of us get Corbyn and McDonnell.

TatianaLarina · 08/11/2019 11:37

A second referendum is a separate issue from Corbyn’s personal pro-Brexit stance. That is the way he will lead the party.

A vote for Labour is not a vote for brexit and cannot be spun that way this time around.

Of course it can. The Tories can and will spin it any way they like just as they did last time.

That Corbyn would negotiate a soft Brexit is precisely the problem.

The LD’s are the only party with the balls to be explicitly Remain, much as I may dislike them.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/11/2019 11:38

Hopefully Labour will highlight the amount of money the Tories have squandered on brexit including the commemorative coins (snort) and the October 31st propaganda. Let's put to bed the idea the Tories are sound with he economy and end the magic money tree jibes we often hear from the right.

ContinuityError · 08/11/2019 11:42

Labour spending plans sustainable because they would go for soft / no Brexit.

Tory spending plans unsustainable because of the economic hit of their hard Brexit.

3dogs2cats thankyou for that sincere and thought-provoking post.

TatianaLarina · 08/11/2019 12:02

I think he is a principled man with a moral compass

Hmmm great post, but what happened to his moral compass on antisemitism? Or the treatment of female MPs - recent deselection list, Luciana Berger etc?

Corbyn has resided over an explosion of AS in Labour that was previously only a minuscule problem.

Well. I have read everything.I can find about anti Semitism in the Labour Party, and I think it’s a smear campaign.I think Luciana Berger certainly suffered abuse, as many politicians , particularly female politicians have. Angela Eagle for example suffered abuse in Liverpool, and in my experience, people who hate you and wish to wound you will use anything, black ,gay, Jewish, fat, thin ,partnered, single, barren, a breeder, ugly, vain, a tart, frigid, posh, common, old , young. Right wing, left wing , fascist, communist.
I deplore it. Diversity is our strength. I think Jeremy Corbyn also deplores it. I think Chris Williamson , who has been suspended also deplores it. I think this is a smear campaign and a witch hunt. And I so wish that the outcome would be for all politicians to promise to be polite and honest and stop abusing and bullying people.
I am in the Labour Party. I have never heard or seen any racism or anti semitism. I have heard Conservatives and Liberal Democrat’s speak to and of Jeremy Corbyn with utter contempt and incivility. I have never seen that in him.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/11/2019 12:26

I agree 3dogs. There was a list of edms and campaigns i saw a while ago that corbyn supported that were very much opposed to and spoke out against as.

Clacton Labour candidate quits over 'Shylock' comment

A Labour candidate has pulled out of the election race over using an anti-semitic remark.

Gideon Bull denied calling a Jewish councillor Shylock directly but admitted using the term during a private meeting.

The Haringey councillor, who was standing in Clacton, Essex, said he did not realise the Shakespearean character was a Jew.

So the best defence of his antisemitism that this Labour candidate could put up is that he lacks the most basic cultural literacy! Grin

Keep sending us your best, Labour!

ContinuityError · 08/11/2019 12:28

@Clavinova

Not sure of your point as your link explains nothing. And yes I know he sits on the Labour Party economic advisory committee.

Does Wren Lewis just not sit comfortably in your Tory bias?

StarryGazeyEyes · 08/11/2019 12:29

I'm only a very occasional poster, but I very much value what you have said 3dogs, both in regard to Labour and in regard to how important Red's contribution has been.

Mistigri · 08/11/2019 12:30

the rest of us get Corbyn and McDonnell.

If you get a Corbyn government it's because voters have voted for it. That's democracy.

You could always move, of course Wink

prettybird · 08/11/2019 12:36

3dogs2cats - excellent post Thanks - even though I won't be voting Labour Wink because I live in Scotland Grin

I watched Nicola Sturgeon's launch of the SNP Campaign and the Q&As afterwards. What a contrast to BJ Hmm: clear statements and clear answers to questions, without obfuscation, being backed into a corner or trapped into inconsistencies Smile. I might be biased though Wink

"I am in the Labour Party. I have never heard or seen any racism or anti semitism."
So your glorious leader seeing a mural with an Anti Jewish caricature straight out of the Goebbels playbook and then "not realising it was offensive ", that doesn't make you wonder? Speaks volumes about critical thinking.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 08/11/2019 12:39

At least bellini and Bear are united in their hatred of Corbyn [crying laughing emoji]

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/labour-general-election-latest-kate-ramsden-resign-corbyn-israel-child-abuse-a9193926.html

A Labour general election candidate has quit after it emerged she likened the actions of the Israeli government to those of a child abuser.

Kate Ramsden stood down over a blog post in which she also reportedly alleged that antisemitism claims against Jeremy Corbyn were “orchestrated by the wealthy establishment”.

The Jewish Labour Movement said the reality was that it “had been shunned and our views ignored”, adding: “There are hundreds of outstanding cases yet to be resolved.”

These cases are literally from the last few days. Amazing how you've never seen any cases of antisemitism in the Labour Party when Labour candidates are dropping like flies over it every day!

3dogs2cats · 08/11/2019 12:41

@CendrillonSings
The point , it seems to me, is that the Labour Councillor resigned and will undoubtedly have had his membership revoked, but Boris Johnson’s numerous, recent and well documented racist bon mots paved the way to leadership of the Conservative Party.

bellinisurge · 08/11/2019 12:45

We expect better of the Labour Party. Saying "the other side are just as bad" is no excuse when the other side are a bunch of wankers.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/11/2019 12:50

Yep, its remarkably cognitive dissonance when tory supporters scream about Labours AS allegations but stay largely silent on all the allegations made towards the conservatives including those made by Baroness Warsi.

Johnson has made countless insensitive comments on various issues (ask the people of Liverpool) but he's treated like the harmless loveable uncle at the family wedding. Makes you wonder who the real dear leader is.

Let's not forget also that the stench of xenophobia still lingers from the brexit campaign (the breaking point poster being a particular low).

Dusty01 · 08/11/2019 12:50

That was such a refreshing post. So heartfelt and a relief from the nasty stuff that I'm trying to ignore.

I also feel reassured by what you say about Corbyn and the Labour party. I am going to vote Labour. To me all the parties have their flaws - as all people do. But my gut feeling is that Corbyn is honest with good intentions. Of course he has made mistakes as has Boris and other leaders. But it is his intentions that matter and I know that the Tories do not have the country's best interests at heart.

Awesome - so you admit that you don't give a damn about Labour antisemitism because "Tories are bad, okay"?

At least we're making some progress - could you at least ask Just to stop pretending that Labour antisemitism doesn't exist, because as the cases I quoted above indicate, it really, really does.
