If labour abstain won’t it go through anyway though?

Epicwaffle · 28/10/2019 15:18

“Not entirely sure what the fuck is going on now though so every possibility I'm wrong 😂😂”

This really speaks to me.

“If labour abstain won’t it go through anyway though?”

I’m trying to figure this out too Bear Confused

DustyDiamond · 28/10/2019 15:34

If labour abstain won’t it go through anyway though?

Not within the FTPA, no
I think it needs at least 2/3 majority

If it's a one line bill, then it's a simple majority (so should pass if labour abstain)

But one line Bill is amendable (hence Labour etc could table amendments such as lowered voting age or 2nd ref etc)

DustyDiamond · 28/10/2019 15:36

I swear I knew fuck all about Parliamentary procedures Pre ref

I've become such a fucking BORE!!! 🙄🙄

BelleHathor · 28/10/2019 15:44

Not a bore at all Dusty , imagine winning the pub quiz by answering a question on parliamentary constitutional procedure! 😉👍

Epicwaffle · 28/10/2019 16:01

Yes Belle, or even better, one day Dusty, you could win a quiz show and loads of money on the back of all this guff! Grin

Parker231 · 28/10/2019 16:03

I did Industrial Relations and Politics for my degree - the amount of material Brexit has generated for current students makes me quite jealous

DustyDiamond · 28/10/2019 16:07

imagine winning the pub quiz by answering a question on parliamentary constitutional procedure!

Picture the scenes!!!

I'd be a local hero 🌟

Bearbehind · 28/10/2019 16:08

Thanks dusty, I was thinking of the wrong bill! This is such a fucking joke!

time4chocolate · 28/10/2019 16:11

Lol at that NewsThump article Parker 😂

You'd honestly be incredulous at the pitch for 'Brexit' as a tv series - too convoluted, too far-fetched & ridiculous twists that are not remotely rooted in reality.

You'd be laughed out the place.

YY as well to the wealth of material for various future study areas!!

IR & politics obvs, but also History, Sociology, Psychology & many others I'm sure...

It's like the trans thing at the mo as well - I had to do a module on Human Rights

DustyDiamond · 28/10/2019 16:17

Aaargh!
Posted by accident....

My Human Rights module I had to do an essay on conflicting rights & had heaps of material on that subject but had to bite my knuckles & not touch it as it's such a contentious area

I managed to shoehorn a bit of politics into my psych dissertation though (voting behaviour & effect on costly-signalling behaviour was touched on)

DustyDiamond · 28/10/2019 16:20

Not effect on, relationship with 🙄

crankyassnoperope · 28/10/2019 16:24

Here's one thing I can't get my head around, does Bojo WANT a general election? Or not? I mean yeah he's asking for one, but he's known all along the chances of Labour going for it are slim. Has he been calling their bluff? Like, destroy them a little bit more by making them refuse? What does he WANT??

I used to be quite sure he wanted No Deal, and that he only bothered negotiating a deal when the Benn act meant the only way he could get No Deal would be to have one! Then he could have got it through (amended, of course) through parliament, but he didn't, which also implies that wouldn't have been Brexity enough, so is a GE now somehow his only route to getting a Brexit hard enough to satisfy the ERG?

If that were the case wouldn't he be doing a bit more to win over Labour and GET his GE? Like ruling out No Deal until it's over? Or simply by doing ANYTHING to win over Labour??

DustyDiamond · 28/10/2019 16:36

Cranky - my read on it is like you said in your first para - he has been using GE as stick to goad Corbyn with & chip away at them. But he's also ok with the idea of a GE as it's a chance to reconfigure Parliament

Wrt deal - I diverge from you as I think he always wanted a deal, the backstop was the bone of contention in the TM's WA - once that was gone the transition deal was ok

By passing the Benn bill, the 'threat' of imminent no deal was removed, which took pressure off the EU as well as Parliament which was an annoyance tbh as it was only that which was focusing minds to reach a conclusion

He has nothing to gain from winning over Corbyn & majority of Labour, nor the Lib Dems or SNP - they've all been explicit that they'd never vote for a 'Tory deal' so it would be a waste of time & energy

I think he's happy with GE or passing of WAB - I don't even think he's bothered which comes first tbh

Epicwaffle · 28/10/2019 16:36

cranky

No idea, but this might help? GrinWink

Brexits Arms - To GE or Not to GE that is the question?
crankyassnoperope · 28/10/2019 16:41

Really useful, thanks Dusty

I think he's happy with GE or passing of WAB - I don't even think he's bothered which comes first tbh

Why has he halted any efforts towards passing the WAB then do you think? And all of that about going on strike until he gets his GE... it seems it's GE or nothing, but WHY?? And if it's so crucial why not assure Labour (who have said this is all it would take) that No Deal is off the table for the time being?

I just can't see why he'd have "paused" his WAB's progress so completely if he were at all into it. Labour would have done just enough to pass it IMO because they want Brexit delivered under a Tory government - that's the only way they can continue to play to their strengths; i.e. neither remainers nor leavers, just a strident domestic policy. All they need out of Brexit is that it's not too hard and that someone else does it, then they'd have a proper shot in a GE.
