Westministenders: Sub-Prime Minister at large

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2019 13:24

Our Sub-Prime Minister BJ is threatening a govt tantrum strike until he is allowed his Haribo GE on 12 December.

If MPs vote for a GE, he has promised them "more time" to debate the WAB,
but that would only be from 29 October to 7 November

  • ridiculously inadequate for such complex legislation -
before Parliament is automatically dissolved for the 25 sitting days before a GE.

The GE debate starts Monday 2:30 pm in the HoC
Corbyn says he'll agree to a GE if BJ takes No Deal off the table

BUT wIth this WA,
No deal cannot 100% be taken off the table whilst the Tories are in office:

they could still No Deal after transition ends on 31 December 2020,
if they don't request a transition by July.

We don't know when the EU will give their decision on an extension, or what it will be:

The EU may decide only after the HoC vote
- in which case MPs would be voting "blindly"

Tusk, Merkel & most other leaders want to grant the Flextension until 31 January,
but Macron & a few others want to give a short extension of only 2-4 weeks, to pressure MPs to pass the WA in November

  • in which case the GE would take place shortly after Brexit, which would be a gift to BJ.

A 12 December GE would also cause serious logistical problems for local council officials:

Apart from their poll station bookings clashing with Xmas bookings for church halls & schools,

they are legally required to send out all the polling cards based on the current electoral roll,
then at the GE, check names against the new electoral roll which must be updated on 1 December

The Rebel Alliance want a long extension, so they have time to add amendments to the WAB,
e.g. a CU, the Level Playing Field agreement in May's WA, maybe even a PV
So many may want to vote against a GE before that ..... but what does Corbyn want ?

BJ as PM could still change the date of any GE after he has agreed to it, if it suits him.

What does BJ want ?
Alice Cooper said it:

"I'm your top prime cut of meat, I'm your choice
I wanna be elected
I'm your yankee doodle dandy in a gold Rolls Royce
I wanna be elected
Kids want a savior, don't need a fake

I wanna be elected
We're all gonna rock to the rules that I make
I wanna be elected, elected, elected..."

Now you’re a No Dealer talk about pile on the pressure on those that don’t have the means and the personal strength to survive another 5 years of Tory rule after No Deal

My whole point about that is that it would be such a fucking mess it wouldn’t take 5 years to sort - we’d be begging to go back in weeks / months

You’re going to get 5 more years of Tory rule, deal or no deal, unless Corbyn buck his ideas up

As I said above, I probably won’t vote because I have no allegiance with any party with a chance here - if enough people do that, BJ doesn’t even need very high numbers to win

placemats · 27/10/2019 16:09

With a PM like we have any opposition should be annihilating him in the polls but no, BJ and the Tories are miles ahead

So Bear are you saying that those who voted in those polls for the Tories are stupid?

Bearbehind · 27/10/2019 16:19

So Bear are you saying that those who voted in those polls for the Tories are stupid?

No, I’m saying more people support what BJ is saying / doing than support what JC is saying / doing.

Regardless of what you think of those people, it is them who will decide a GE

If you don’t want a Tory government then people should be doing more to make the alternative viable

And endlessly defending Corbyn and blaming the Tories for Brexit doesn’t do that

Frankiestein402 · 27/10/2019 16:24

If the labour leader is even vaguely left of centre it doesn't matter who they are the tory spin/right wing media will portray them as extremist and they will become yet another 'hindrance' to Labour being elected.

Corbyn's policies are not extremist - those saying they are have taken the blue pill.

thecatfromjapan · 27/10/2019 16:24

It is stressful Just. You're valuable here. And all posters, communicating in good faith is what makes this such a good place to visit and spend time.

Goodness knows, it's pretty awful in many places outside this thread.

thecatfromjapan · 27/10/2019 16:26

Anyway, in other news, I'm taking a little bit of heart from what Basil posted about the 'Don't Knowz'.

Basilpots · 27/10/2019 16:31

Just Assume stoic stance. Wink

Seriously I know you have had tough time Flowers

Bearbehind · 27/10/2019 16:33

Anyway, in other news, I'm taking a little bit of heart from what Basil posted about the 'Don't Knowz'.

I’d probably be in the ‘Don’t Knows’ and, as above, if those of us in that category just don’t vote or spoil their ballot paper, the threshold for winning just gets lower.

Basilpots · 27/10/2019 16:34

Always beware the ‘Don’t Knows’ Cat Wink

NoWordForFluffy · 27/10/2019 16:44

I'm a don't know. Just means I'm voting tactically, as probably many others are.

Regarding austerity, this is an interesting read on Labour's viewpoint (I've no idea how reliable the source is though).

Bearbehind · 27/10/2019 16:47

But there will be tactical votes on both sides won’t there, so they could even out?

Jason118 · 27/10/2019 16:48

I think the issue with Corbyn is nothing to do with policy. Labour policy is left of centre social democrat stuff. The issue is competence as a leader, the main spokesperson for those policies, and as such he's not very good at it. I get that the media don't help and misinformation reigns, but a good leader would ameliorate some of these problems. He doesn't.

chomalungma · 27/10/2019 16:50

But there will be tactical votes on both sides won’t there, so they could even out

True - but there are many Conservative / Lib Dem marginals and Labour / Conservative marginals. There aren't many Lib Dem / Labour marginals - so that makes the vote splitting between Remain / Leave and tactical voting much more interesting and unpredicatable.

wondering7777 · 27/10/2019 16:53

I can’t see how it is anything other than Corbyns latest tactic to avoid stepping up to the plate.

He can’t keep saying he doesn’t want the GE he’s been asking for every time he’s spoken about Brexit so he’s trying this to divert from it because he knows he won’t win a GE.

Totally agree, Bear. I just hope Macron is serious in his threats about refusing any further extensions, as in my opinion it’s the only thing that will force Corbyn/Labour to back a GE.

Basilpots · 27/10/2019 16:55

Aron Banks has announced they will be launching a Brexit tactical voting app.

chomalungma · 27/10/2019 16:59

Aron Banks has announced they will be launching a Brexit tactical voting app

Does he want the deal or does he want No Deal?

What does a vote for the Conservative party lead to?

Basilpots · 27/10/2019 17:07

Aron Banks said he would back Johnson’s deal. Back in the day he was happy with Norway option.

He was more interested in avoiding a repeat of Peterborough where Leave vote split letting Labour in. That and he’s probably not averse to a bit of data harvesting.

Frankiestein402 · 27/10/2019 17:10

He can’t keep saying he doesn’t want the GE he’s been asking for every time he’s spoken about Brexit so he’s trying this to divert from it because he knows he won’t win a GE.

Whatever you think his motive is, do you understand that agreeing to any of Boris GE offerings to date simply hands control of a no-deal option to Boris - is that what you want?

Basilpots · 27/10/2019 17:11

What does a vote for the Conservative party lead to?

Christ knows I’m sure your average Tory voter in 2017 didn’t expect what has unfolded over the past two years Confused

The Tory Party is indeed to be blamed for Brexit. I concur wholeheartedly with BCF on this. The referendum was put to 'the will of the people' simply to placate the ERG members in the Tory Party. Everyone with an ounce of political sense knows this.

I've never endlessly defended Corbyn and I know few people and posters on this board who do so.

Bear

Bearbehind · 27/10/2019 17:15

Whatever you think his motive is, do you understand that agreeing to any of Boris GE offerings to date simply hands control of a no-deal option to Boris - is that what you want?

The Tories have had the no deal option since day 1 and haven’t used it

Corbyn has been banging on about a GE since then too

Nothing has actually changed so it’s just an excuse from Corbyn

As my first post today pointed out, no deal can’t actually be technically prevented (or at least no one has explained how it could) so it’s stalemate because what Corbyn wants is not possible

So then what?

Basilpots · 27/10/2019 17:15

The Tory Party is indeed to be blamed for Brexit. I concur wholeheartedly with BCF on this.
^^This times a thousand.

To.Be.Repeated.Ad nauseum.

placemats · 27/10/2019 17:18

What are the benefits of a 'no deal' Brexit Bear?

Bearbehind · 27/10/2019 17:18

To.Be.Repeated.Ad nauseum.

And what does that achieve?

A lot of people on this thread spend far too much time attributing blame for things that cannot be changed and not enough about considering what is possible in practice now

This whole thing is a fucking disaster - harping on about who is to blame doesn’t change that
