Westministenders: Sub-Prime Minister at large

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2019 13:24

Our Sub-Prime Minister BJ is threatening a govt tantrum strike until he is allowed his Haribo GE on 12 December.

If MPs vote for a GE, he has promised them "more time" to debate the WAB,
but that would only be from 29 October to 7 November

  • ridiculously inadequate for such complex legislation -
before Parliament is automatically dissolved for the 25 sitting days before a GE.

The GE debate starts Monday 2:30 pm in the HoC
Corbyn says he'll agree to a GE if BJ takes No Deal off the table

BUT wIth this WA,
No deal cannot 100% be taken off the table whilst the Tories are in office:

they could still No Deal after transition ends on 31 December 2020,
if they don't request a transition by July.

We don't know when the EU will give their decision on an extension, or what it will be:

The EU may decide only after the HoC vote
- in which case MPs would be voting "blindly"

Tusk, Merkel & most other leaders want to grant the Flextension until 31 January,
but Macron & a few others want to give a short extension of only 2-4 weeks, to pressure MPs to pass the WA in November

  • in which case the GE would take place shortly after Brexit, which would be a gift to BJ.

A 12 December GE would also cause serious logistical problems for local council officials:

Apart from their poll station bookings clashing with Xmas bookings for church halls & schools,

they are legally required to send out all the polling cards based on the current electoral roll,
then at the GE, check names against the new electoral roll which must be updated on 1 December

The Rebel Alliance want a long extension, so they have time to add amendments to the WAB,
e.g. a CU, the Level Playing Field agreement in May's WA, maybe even a PV
So many may want to vote against a GE before that ..... but what does Corbyn want ?

BJ as PM could still change the date of any GE after he has agreed to it, if it suits him.

What does BJ want ?
Alice Cooper said it:

"I'm your top prime cut of meat, I'm your choice
I wanna be elected
I'm your yankee doodle dandy in a gold Rolls Royce
I wanna be elected
Kids want a savior, don't need a fake

I wanna be elected
We're all gonna rock to the rules that I make
I wanna be elected, elected, elected..."

Yes just visiting Unis is expensive. I was lucky @Sostenueto and because I was registered as a disabled student the Scottish Office bought me a computer and printer.

I noticed when I got to Uni that the army had recruited heavily at my working class Scottish school. None of my English peers at my Russel Group Uni had had anything to do with them, no school army work experience weeks for them. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the week but I did feel the recruitment was targeted.

@Hoooo doesn't !

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2019 22:48

That's another difference, sos - the dreadful expense of interviews.

When I applied to uni, it was normal to get offers without interview, just on expected A level results
Maybe because many students then wouldn't have had parental transport and they wouldn't have refunded my train & bus tickets either
Same for my Master's; I only had an interview for my PhD

Wombles of Wimbledon common are we....Grin

the Lib Dems and SNP are going to put forward a proposal for an election on Monday 9th Dec. I'm not sure of the logic behind this, will have to read more, just seen a post on Twitter. Does anyone else understand this ?

If they get a GE then Macron will agree to an extension to allow the GE to happen. If MPs don’t vote for a GE next week (and BJ’s deal isn’t voted through either) then there’s a chance that Macron will veto any further extension and we’ll be out with no deal on October 31st.

ListeningQuietly · 26/10/2019 22:49

Tobemory or Madame Chaulet ?

Basilpots · 26/10/2019 22:50

Great Uncle Bulgaria obvs...

ListeningQuietly · 26/10/2019 22:52

Bigchoc
TBH my kids had no interviews for their degrees
one went to one open day on their own by train and one by car with me
the other went to one by car with DH
I think it varies massively between subjects

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/10/2019 22:54

I had interviews. I paid for them out of my saturday job. Dd only had one.

tobee · 26/10/2019 22:54

Someone should be starting another"are Wombles real?" thread on chat again soon. Confused iIts overdue!!

Personally, I have higher standards for some parties than others, in response to an earlier poster. I don't think that's weird at all. I'm never going to vote Tory, for a start. I have no standards for them. Ditto the Brexit Party.

Best of luck to your dgd Sos and her uni applications!! Smile

Well, this will be fun for those in Kent Confused

A trial run of a no deal brexit scenario for the whole of the UK for 3 weeks might make brexiters (who would be happy with no deal) realise what a clusterfuck it would be. Obviously this would never happen because we can't ethically trial lack of good and essential medication. But then surely a no deal brexit is unethical in that case? Thinking out loud here. Something needs to happen to make people realise. Just not something that would harm the vulnerable.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/10/2019 22:57

I only had interviews for the courses with Drama as the joint subject (which I dropped as my preferred course after realising I couldn't do 4 years with luvvies, sticking to Eng. Lit.!).

Sos, you can apply to unis for funds if you're low income. I got some money every year on my undergraduate course as I was from a low income family. Always worth an application.

Violetparis · 26/10/2019 22:58

Thanks wondering, is it just a case of getting an election on their terms rather than Boris's terms Confused ? Does 3 days earlier make a difference, weren't some of the SNP MP's complaining about voters having to come out to vote in the cold and the dark in December ?

Dusty01 · 26/10/2019 22:58

Someone upthread just mentioned this. It looks like it might be for real.

Well Bon Marche shop in town preparing to shut down as firm in administration. If they can't get enough business to pay rates and rent in a town 69% over the age of 65 then who can!?

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 26/10/2019 23:03

Just saw on Twitter and have seen it mentioned by a couple of pps re Dec 9th election - the thread is here:

I don't know if sufficient Labour MPs would support a GE, even if Corbyn whipped them
However, iirc the Monday debate is not a VoNC, just a govt motion for a GE, hence only a simple majority required

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn

Excl: Nicola Sturgeon pleaded with Jeremy Corbyn to back a snap General Election alongside her during secret Westminster meeting
