I see the decision re Jo Maugham’s s 55 Taxation (Cross Border Trade) Act challenge is expected to be handed down at 5 pm

Switches on China Today for first dibs at news ....

HeyNotInMyName · 18/10/2019 17:21

Can I check with you?
If the WA passes, after the 31st October, nothing is changing until the full TA is signed off? That is end of 2020 or later?
Otherwise, what is supposed to happen?

MockersthefeMANist · 18/10/2019 17:22

One more reason to dislike Priti Patel:

She has the most annoying vocal affectation of a dropped 'G', like Desmond Olivier Dingle of the National Theatre of Brent:

'We will be leavin the EU...'

Basilpots · 18/10/2019 17:26

Hey if we can’t agree a TA then a ‘no (trade) deal/WTO is back in play. Without the option of remaining this time.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 17:27

red I read Letwin has put in an amendment for a PV (but no confirmation of this)
and definitely has this one to close the Benn loophole:

"That, in light of the new deal agreed with the European Union,
which enables the United Kingdom to respect the result of the referendum on its membership of the European Union and to leave the European Unionn^ on 31 October with a deal,
this house has considered the matter but withholds approval unless and until implementing legislation is passed."

Basilpots · 18/10/2019 17:27

It’s the smirk with Patel that does me in, I can just about deal with the voice.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 17:28

Oops, sorryMship Blush - I'm so used to red's posts being highlighted as OP

Oakenbeach · 18/10/2019 17:29

Because Johnson will bomb in an election with his cry of, 'I fixed Brexit.'

The vast majority of voters will who’ll vote for BJ on the back of an “I fixed Brexit” message will vote for him in a GE should Parliament block him tomorrow.

However, with Brexit done, quite a few people
won’t feel so inclined to do so... Voters don’t tend to vote out of gratitude.

TheMShip · 18/10/2019 17:35

That's ok BCF I found more info on the Guardian. Basically the govt has 2 motions tabled. Motion 1 is for the deal, for which Letwin has proposed the delay amendment. Motion 2 is for no deal on 31st, for which Kyle and Wilson, the usual PV suspects, have proposed a PV amendment on the deal. Motion 2 is unlikely to be moved, therefore likely no PV vote tomorrow. Confused? I kind of still am.

For that to work there would gap for people to realise he hasn’t fixed Brexit he’s just got it off the telly for a bit. A gap that is going to be painful to endure.

placemats · 18/10/2019 17:38

A gap that is going to be painful to endure.

Agree Basil

It will expose the charlatan.

everythingcrossed · 18/10/2019 17:38

Has anyone mentioned Philip Hammond's piece that has just gone live on the Times website? He seems to be saying that he will not support the government tomorrow - I think they were counting on his vote (and Mark Francois is also saying that he has yet to make up his mind, for entirely opposite reasons, one supposes).

"If the government can reassure sceptics like me of its commitment to an ambitious future relationship under this deal, then even if it loses the vote on the amendment tomorrow and has to seek an extension to the Article 50 period, it can re-present the deal to parliament in the form of the WAIB once the extension has been granted and there is no longer a risk of a crash-out on October 31. There are many colleagues who would then support it — and the extension could be terminated as soon as the WAIB is passed."

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 18/10/2019 17:39

Will no deal be completely off the table at any point?

placemats · 18/10/2019 17:43

Of course it could Bercows

A new government, entirely composed of remain voters, with a majority in Parliament, could easily take the country to another referendum.

Keir Starmerr@Keir*_Starmer

Excuse the long thread, but I have looked carefully at the #BrexitDeal negotiated by Boris Johnson.
Here is my analysis: 1/

Labour’s concerns with Theresa May’s deal were not principally about the backstop.
They were about the Political Declaration and our future relationship with the EU after Brexit. 2/

Having reviewed what has been agreed,
it is clear that the Johnson deal is a far worse deal than Theresa May’s deal.
It paves the way for a decade of deregulation.
It gives Johnson licence to slash workers’ rights, environmental standards and consumer protections. 3/

Rather than strengthening the Political Declaration (PD) along the lines Labour argued,
the political direction of travel under Johnson is to a distant economic relationship with the EU.

It rules out a new Customs Union and a close future relationship with the Single Market. 4/

This inevitably means there will be new trade barriers with the EU and additional checks at borders.
The PD is explicit about this.
And the Johnson deal makes it easier for a Tory Government to cut rights and standards. 5/

On services, the PD offers nothing beyond the weak provisions in the Theresa May deal. Nor has there been any progress on the question of agencies and our future security relationship. 6/

The level playing field commitments are significantly weaker:
no longer building on the measures in the old Withdrawal Agreement, which provided for dynamic alignment in certain areas. 7/

Instead, the level playing field provisions only last until the end of transition with a warning shot from the EU about the impact this will have on (reduced) access to EU markets. 8/

Labour will not support a flawed Brexit deal that harms jobs, rights and living standards.
This deal will unquestionably do that.9/

Labour cannot support this deal.
If Boris Johnson has confidence in his deal, he should put it back to the people in a public vote against remain
- and that is an argument we will be making on Saturday.^ 10/

Butterymuffin · 18/10/2019 17:45

Twitter reporting the Maugham petition has been refused.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 17:45

The trick is, getting that Remain govt

DGRossetti · 18/10/2019 17:46

Hammond is basically saying what my old boss would have:

If this deal is so good, then a few weeks delay to inspect it properly won't do any harm, will it ?

At the moment Boris is doing a very good personation of one of these characters that knocks on your door offering to do your drive because they are "in the area" with a price that (let's be honest) might not last as long as the drive they lay.

In fact the better Boris says the deal is, the less it should matter if we have to wait for it a bit. Not unlike a Tory government, really.

Completely ruining the flow of Westminstenders, and not at all woo, but presumably some reflection of underlying anxiety (or wine) I had a weird dream last night. Can't recall the flow of story, but the standout scene was me being shown around somewhere by some Americans (hopefully not Guantanamo Bay) ... they were pointing out various buts and pieces, and one said "This was put in for (or by ?) Ronald Reagan". At which point I started blubbing. One of the Americans (a man) said "Hey, buddy, what's up ?" and I was struggling to try and say that I hadn't realised we'd had peace in Northern Ireland that long.

ENDS

As you were Grin

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2019 17:47

If it’s worse then at some point I hope they look at their own role in constantly thwarting agreement on May’s.

Feel annoyed at the lot of them.

ListeningQuietly · 18/10/2019 17:50

Lewis Goodall (Twitter @lewis_goodall)
Is reporting that a Labour group of MPs have been assured of concessions on worker rights.

Translation: here is a fig-leaf and salve for your conscience.

CendrillonSings · 18/10/2019 17:54

Jolyon has been told to jog on! Grin

At least Lord Pentland lets him down gently:

"I conclude that the petitioner’s applications for interim orders are misconceived and unjustified. They have no or at best a weak prima facie case."

Ouch.

Peregrina · 18/10/2019 17:55

Is reporting that a Labour group of MPs have been assured of concessions on worker rights.

Then they are bigger fools than they look because Johnson doesn't honour commitments and if they don't know that now, they never will.
