I don't really feel qualified to start a Westminstenders thread but we need a new one....

Macron says no more delays /extensions.

According to twitter

Dusty01 · 18/10/2019 15:03

Just on the Guardian live page:

The court of session has finished hearing submissions on the latest legal challenge by anti-Brexit campaigner Jolyon Maugham QC, and Lord Pentland has said that he will give his decision by the end of the day.

Scotland’s highest court heard that Boris Johnson’s new withdrawal agreement to leave the European Union involves a “clear and unequivocal breach” of national law.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 15:07

It is very different to have something as a possibility after a PM is dumped,
to having it as the fixed future

It's not an insurance policy; it's the main event

It's totally blatant

The big difference in this WA is not just that there is no figleaf, (magic tech)
but that for the first time ever in NI,
the Nationalists have been given control over what happens

That really changes the atmosphere
The Nationalists will keep the Irish Sea border for ever

WeshMaGueule · 18/10/2019 15:07

I was at school with a girl called Jo Maugham. I'm slightly disappointed that it's not her. /irrelevant

prettybird · 18/10/2019 15:09

@thewomanontheshore - as has been pointed out, Scotland leaving the Union does not give the Conservatives an electoral advantage.

The UK almost always gets the government that England wants. On the rare occasions that that does not happen, where the Scottish MPs have made a difference, the government formed is not stable. The current one, where the 12 extra Scottish Conservative MPs elected in 2017 gave May sufficient numbers to be able to form a government (albeit with the C&S arrangement with the DUP), is an example of one such unstable government Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 15:13

Also, switching the backstop to NI-only in May's WA required the EU to agree

In that situation, the EU would much rather the UK stayed in a v close relationship,
which is why the ERG kept saying that May's WA trapped them forever^

ListeningQuietly · 18/10/2019 15:14

I give in.
I'll just go along and shout even though nobody will be listening and the world has gone mad.

Peregrina · 18/10/2019 15:14

But at least with Scotland gaining independence, it gives us somewhere to move to. Bring it on, I say.

QueenOfThorns · 18/10/2019 15:17

But at least with Scotland gaining independence, it gives us somewhere to move to.

My thoughts exactly.

TatianaLarina · 18/10/2019 15:18

It’s very different to have something as a possibility after a PM is dumped, to having it as the fixed future

It wasn’t just a possibilty it was the intention. And as long as the Tories kept power, it was the most likely outcome.

Watching my paint drying is coming on a treat, much more invigorating than Brexit. At another level it represents progress.

Timeywimey10 · 18/10/2019 15:19

Maybe MPs could vote for the deal but require transition to be extended to 2022. A lot could change by the end of 2022. Or indeed, nothing at all but it prevents a no deal exit for three more years.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 15:19

pretty Removing Scotland's 59 seats & NI's 18 seats does make it easier for the Tories to get a majority

They only have to get a majority in a say 575-seat England & Wales HoC, instead of a 650-seat HoC
where out of those 77 seats they have at most 15 possibles.

Timeywimey10 · 18/10/2019 15:20

But at least with Scotland gaining independence, it gives us somewhere to move to

And NI!

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 15:25

When May's deal was rejected, MPs still hoped for a better deal

If, as predicted, Letwin's amendment asking for a PV is heavily defeated, then MPs will be under great pressure to vote for BJ's deal

If MPs think it no worse than May's deal, then they are more likely to vote for it at this late stage

thecatfromjapan · 18/10/2019 15:32

Best for Britain have a list of potentially wavering MPs and two separate suggested email texts (one for Labour MPs, one for Conservatives).

They also add a list of email addresses.

Please follow the link and send some emails.

This is going to be such a close vote and so much hangs on it.

It really is worth a few minutes.

I've sent 3 in 10 minutes - and will keep on working through the list in batches as I wait for things to cook, wait to pick up daughter, etc.

prettybird · 18/10/2019 15:37

BigChoc - historically, it has made no difference. Labour only gets in when it has sufficient votes in middle England. May only "won"(ish Wink) this time thanks to the 12 extra Conservative MPs. Scotland returned 56 SNP MPs in 2015. Even if every single one of them, or even if all 59 Scottish seats Shock, had been Labour, that still wouldn't have been enough for Labour to form a majority. Confused

My constituent Graham Norman just came to my surgery. He is a lifelong Unite member who voted Leave. He begged me to vote for a deal tomorrow. I haven’t decided what I’ll do but when I look at some people’s comments on twitter calling people like him a Tory - I despair

Boris Johnson, sacked twice for lying, has misled the Queen, unlawfully suspended Parliament, sacked 21 MP’s for disagreeing with him & now plans voter suppression to rig the result of the next General Election. And some think he can be trusted on Brexit!

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/10/2019 15:41

This is an interesting development if Bercow chooses it

Heather Stewart
@GuardianHeather
Understand Labour will support the Letwin amendment - which makes it likely to pass.
Would force Johnson to request an extension tomorrow; and mean we won't get a clean, up-and-down vote on his deal.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 15:45

YouGov

Opinion may change as more is written about the WA, but:

By 41% to 24%, voters want Parliament to pass the WA
that is 67% of Leave voters in favour

BUT
17% support the WA
15% neutral
23% oppose
45% Don't Know

thecatfromjapan · 18/10/2019 15:46

Well boo fucking Hoo for Gloria.

It's her job to explain to him why this Deal will fuck him and his lifetime's work over. And his children's lives.

And then to promise him - and mean it - that she will do everything she can to ensure a better future.

She talks about him as though he's a pitiful little gerbil. That's one bloody patronising post.

If I encountered someone trying to eat poison, I hope i'd have the sense to stop them. Not pat them gently on their way.

mrslaughan · 18/10/2019 15:47

@JustAnotherPoster00 what I would like to know - is what she said to the United member? Did she explain it could mean loss of sick and holiday pay? Or just simply loss of his job entirely?
Did he explain why he wants this deal?

Sure - it's a moving story and will be probably used to justify her supporting this deal - but thy is just not enough

thecatfromjapan · 18/10/2019 15:48

I think she thinks she's Pontius Pilate crosses with Our Lady of the Sorrows.

As opposed to an adult, with a job.
