I don't really feel qualified to start a Westminstenders thread but we need a new one....

Of course, some people might think that pulling the UK apart is a benefit of Brexit!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/10/2019 09:41

I am so convinced that voting this down would kill Brexit. It would keep the BXP aligned with the Tories.

borntobequiet · 18/10/2019 09:42

I agree with Peregrina that the main driver of the Referendum result was not austerity. Immigration (or the perception of immigration) was probably a much more important factor - without any rational consideration of the benefits brought by immigration - partly because these were never properly elucidated.
Sheer bloody mindedness and visceral dislike of the political and (perceived) privileged classes (aka the "elite") probably played a big part as well.

Peregrina · 18/10/2019 09:42

So if it gets voted down - then what? Johnson is forced to ask for an extension?

If it gets passed - bonfire of regulations here we come. Don't say you weren't warned, Leavers. It will be exactly what you voted for.

Timeywimey10 · 18/10/2019 09:43

Every vote for the Tories’ deal on Saturday is a vote to further deregulate workers' rights

Agreed. I've said this ad infinitum but there are two reasons Tories wanted Brexit, one is about money and avoiding tax, the other is about removing worker's rights. We only joined the Social Chapter under the Labour government.

prettybird · 18/10/2019 09:46

On practical level, the onus for dealing with the consequences of this deal is going to be placed on Scotland, Liverpool, Wales and France as they will now be the customs point Hmm I know that the Scottish ports are not geared up for any customs clearing. I doubt Holyhead is either Confused

I was also wondering if they might become a target for loyalist terrorists Sad And while we're talking about it, why isn't Arlene being excoriated for meeting with loyalist terrorist organisations yesterday? ShockAngry The fact that Corbyn (who I'm no fan of, as most of you know Wink) met with Sinn Fein is still held against him demonstrates double standards Confused

Peregrina · 18/10/2019 09:46

Sheer bloody mindedness and visceral dislike of the political and (perceived) privileged classes (aka the "elite") probably played a big part as well.

That accounts for the vote against Cameron. But Johnson is from the same mould yet people fell in behind him and Farage. Farage I imagine, is not seen as part of the elite, despite his moneyed Public school background. Is it because Johnson and Farage try to do their 'man of the people' act?

JeSuisPoulet · 18/10/2019 09:48

Borntobe I personally think the immigration issue was a spin off from austerity - the whole "they come over here and take our jobs" vox pop we were subjected to by those who didn't want to take the cleaning/fruit picking jobs but weren't qualified enough to be a nurse, etc.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/10/2019 09:54

Immigration wouldnt have been such an issue if the country hadnt been underfunded for a decade and there needs to be questions asked of MSM when all this shitshow is finished in the next 50 years

Ok-You’ve been bullied into then? Great.

You appear to have difficulties with both comprehension and empathy.

I personally wouldn't vote for the deal actually. Though I'm also scared of no deal.

I have just run the numbers again for Saturday's vote, based on my own estimations (not the Twitter polls)

My current estimate:
FOR the Deal 317
AGAINST the Deal 319

This is getting very nervous now

thecatfromjapan · 18/10/2019 10:01

It's incredible, isn't it?

The deal is so bad. It's Neville Chamberlain bad.

It's insane that the numbers are so close.

mrslaughan · 18/10/2019 10:01

@JustAnotherPoster00
The vote was 3 years ago - are those constituencies still leave? Many are already feeling the effects of brexit - jobs lost, and v clear more are in the line......
Are there labour MPs in there telling them this deal will mean the end to the NHS and a bonfire if there workers rights - and it will take generations to claw those back? Where's labours impassioned message to them that this will ruin lives..... take our hand and we will fight for you against this....but then who would know if labour would fight for their rights and jobs.....

I heard JC in the radio yesterday about this deal - his statement was so weak and wishy washy and not delivered with any passion. I am not saying what he said is wrong - buried in it was the right message - but BURIED - that's what makes him in-electable..... and such a disappointment.

TatianaLarina · 18/10/2019 10:03

bojo bringing back TMs WA in all but name.

It’s fundamentally different - and much worse. May’s never had a hope in hell. This one does.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/10/2019 10:04

On twitter and in the alternative media absolutely, but as far as the MSM goes...

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

From LBC radio this morning - spokesperson for NI farmers, plus the CBI appear to be in favour of Boris' deal.

prettybird · 18/10/2019 10:10

For ever Tory (or ex Tory) who votes against BJ's abomination of a Deal, he'll need to convince two Labour MPs to rebel.

While I'm posting, just to remind you all (and give you a cheerful and accurate ear worm Wink) for the weekend..... Grin

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/10/2019 10:11

You missed out the other three results!

Not intentionally, I post things whether they are in support or Labour or not Cutandpasteinova so much less partisan than yourself

Clavinova · 18/10/2019 10:13

JustAnotherPoster00
How can you be much less partisan than me if you only post in favour of Labour? Grin

BunchMunch · 18/10/2019 10:17

Not a surprise that Princes Park had such a strong Labour victory - Liverpool is solidly Labour.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/10/2019 10:21

How can you be much less partisan than me if you only post in favour of Labour?

It was a retweet I posted, but like I say, normally when I post election or poll results I post them whether they are in Labours favour or not, so meh Grin

PigeonofDoom · 18/10/2019 10:29

The dales and north York’s results are also unsurprising- it’s true blue farmer area. The farmers round our way all vote Tory/UKIP/leave (judging by the massive placards in their fields).

borntobequiet · 18/10/2019 10:31

I did wonder about problems with immigration being a spin off of austerity, but decided against, because it seemed to me that plenty of people who weren't being directly impacted by austerity, and didn't care a lot those who were, voted Leave. My guess was that very many of those most impacted by austerity- the poorest and most disadvantaged - didn't vote.

The more you look into PM deal, the worse it is

It trashes environment, dumps workers’ rights & stokes tension in NI.

And when transition ends in Dec 2020, likely no trade agreement agreed & hard right will get their dream of crash out No Deal Brexit

I’ll be voting against

borntobequiet · 18/10/2019 10:32

And on balance, I don't want this deal to pass.
