Big week ahead.

Johnson has until Tuesday Afternoon to get his shit together for the EU.

He thinks it can be down, but still lots to do in that time.

This week we have the Queen's Speech too, which is going to be misused as a party political broadcast.

Remember if the government can't pass the QS, there's a crisis that gets generated as a direct result. Sticking in proposals that any liberal or leftie will struggle with, is deliberately provoking a crisis of that nature. A proposal of that type would have to be anti democratic in nature, like... Ermmm... Voter ID. Hell, well what do you know.

Johnson is still after his election because as it stands he's a passenger stuck in the runaway train of his own creation.

Talk of a deal breakthrough is still overstated too. The DUP and many of the usual ERG suspects have poured water on the idea. And many on the opposition benches are pushing hard on a confirmary ref being needed for a deal - they don't have the numbers yet, but talk is that they are close. We also have loyalist military making threats about an Irish Sea Border solution.

Time for Project Shit Meets Fan.

We are having to find someone to countersign dd's passport for a school trip. Both parents live in an area where there are no professional people. We changed church and there is a new vicar who hasn't been around for two years. Thankfully there are some retired teachers at church, alternatively we could ask the department that is organising the trip.

Thankfully we have some

NoWordForFluffy · 14/10/2019 07:35

What a nightmare. I'm always willing to offer my signing services to everyone I've known for the right number of years! I've done surprisingly few though.

PMK
I’m at loss with the idea of ID card to be able to vote
A switch to postal vote solves that problem easily.

Doesn’t solve the issue with bank accounts etc... but tbh how many countries don’t have a system of ID card of some sort?.
I’ve never understood the issue britain has with it (bar the cost but that’s a government issue, not an ID card issue)

We have had to find £400 per child to equip them for school. I am on Carers'allowance get dla and child benefit. Their dad contributes quite a lot but we went overdrawn last month due to school costs.

If it were not for the bank of mum and dad, I would be in the position of not being able to afford passport or school trip.

Basilpots · 14/10/2019 07:56

Didn’t we have the whole ID card debate some years ago ? It couldn’t be agreed what information would be included on it I think.

Wasn’t it scuppered by the very people who are proposing it now seem to remember David Davis getting his knickers in a right twist about the very idea of British citizens having identity cards.

Timeywimey10 · 14/10/2019 08:40

I don't know why they can't have a card almost identical to a driving licence in size and cost, and you can choose to have that if you can't or don't drive.

Is there an expiry on a provisional licence? I suppose you could have that as ID (though the first one is about £35 so a lot of money).

If the state want you to have ID to vote, the state should probably provide it. I am not really against the idea of ID and hate all the hassle around trying to find a bank statement or bill that is less than 3 months old, and I think postal votes are massively open to fraud and undue influence. Not sure why we can't look at Estonia's digital system and nick theirs. They have online voting and have obviously (hopefully) got around the fraud issues.

Timeywimey10 · 14/10/2019 08:40

What do they do in NI? You have to have ID to vote there.

thecatfromjapan · 14/10/2019 08:50

We did, Basilpots.

I think this wheeze will run into the buffers of reality quite quickly too.

thecatfromjapan · 14/10/2019 08:53

I'm tired of being gaslit by Boris Johnson.

Honestly, it's a form of abuse, or even terrorism, of the UK population.

We need to start naming this crap for what it is, not pretending it's in any way rational or sensible.

Normal, democracy-based (or democracy-intended) governments don't terrorise their populations.

PMK (finally caught up!)
Thanks, RTB
What a month this will be!

GingerPCatt · 14/10/2019 09:05

Cat that plays on my mind a lot.
This is our own MPs, our own government holding a gun to the heads of the most vulnerable. This isn’t an a war that’s been waged on us by another country (OK that may be debatable). The EU is not kicking us out. People voted for this and then the tories have run with it to make it the most extreme version (and most damaging to the people) possible.

MockersthefeMANist · 14/10/2019 09:10

It's the Queen's Peach Today!

'My Government is going to hand out free unicorns to all. Apparently. And I want you all to know, I don't write this rubbish....'

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 14/10/2019 09:14

What time is the QS?

BlackeyedGruesome · 14/10/2019 09:16

Poor queen. Fancy having to read out rubbish.

Twitter

Is reporting that Johnson's speech was checked by lawyers acting for the Queen in advance. 😮

'+BREAKING+

In an unprecedented move, the Queen demanded Boris Johnson hand over the “The Queen’s Speech” a week in advance to check legal status.

Complete breakdown in trust between the Queen & Nr. 10.'

That seems quite incredible to me. 😮

thecatfromjapan · 14/10/2019 09:19

I mean, the last 3 years have basically been an erosion of the boundaries of what we'll tolerate - and that has speeded up exponentially under Johnson - but ... seriously, WTF?! 😮

BlackeyedGruesome · 14/10/2019 09:27

OMG. Lawyers

thecatfromjapan · 14/10/2019 09:30

Ginger I know it's a truism now, & it's been widely reported that Brexit is known to be affecting the UK's mental health (with GPs reporting AD requests citing Brexit) but ... every now and then I just stop & think

  • how extraordinary that is
  • how unacceptable that is
  • how awful that is for each and every one of us
  • how unnecessary & unethical it is, when we live such short, usually quite tough, lives
  • how I will never, ever allow myself to accept this as OK or 'normal', however long it goes on, however much pressure there is to absorb it into 'everyday reality'.

It's not OK.
It's not normal.

DGRossetti · 14/10/2019 09:49

In an unprecedented move, the Queen demanded Boris Johnson hand over the “The Queen’s Speech” a week in advance to check legal status.

I had one of those "if only" moments on Saturday, imagining her madge (and I personally would consider it significant if she chooses to appear in person to read the speech) adding her own coda (or preface) to the speech kicking arse.

However the preceding news is extraordinary enough. Having got a preview of the speech, will this mean the palace are going to critique it ? And what if Boris decides at the last minute to substitute it for a fresh - unseen - copy ? Or is that part of the palaces plan ?

BigChocFrenzy · 14/10/2019 09:53

Everyone who has to deal with BJ soon learns what a lying weasel he is
Now HMQ knows and sounds pissed - or maybe Charles / WIlliam adding this advice

For some reason - personal feelings about monarchy to one side - it really hit me when I read (another thread) that HMQ had decided to no longer keep corgis, as they were likely to outlive her. It suggested an incredibly practical approach to sentiment and certainly someone who is quite capable of and prepared to think the worst.

(Compare with some folk who won't even make a will as they "can't think about it").

Which makes me wonder if there is an element of trying to ensure Charles - whenever he does wear the crown - is as prepped as possible.

After all, if HMQ were to be taken in the next few weeks, it would be Boris that would be expected to advise the new Monarch.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 14/10/2019 10:17

Borrowed cat still looking unimpressed as we settle in for the QS. I do love the pomp and ceremony in our country. I feel the same for the pomp and ceremony associated with Catholicism. I no longer go to church but the rituals and calm are comforting. Maybe it's my ASD/ADD brain that finds it soothing. I know many disagree with the royal family and I'm not a fan of most of them (loved Diana) but the history, tradition and heritage and just the whole kit and kaboodle really strikes a chord with me somehow. I'm not describing it well but nevermind.

I love it too, Bercows. I particularly love the horses, they are magnificent.
