Westminstenders: Showdown

Big week ahead.

Johnson has until Tuesday Afternoon to get his shit together for the EU.

He thinks it can be down, but still lots to do in that time.

This week we have the Queen's Speech too, which is going to be misused as a party political broadcast.

Remember if the government can't pass the QS, there's a crisis that gets generated as a direct result. Sticking in proposals that any liberal or leftie will struggle with, is deliberately provoking a crisis of that nature. A proposal of that type would have to be anti democratic in nature, like... Ermmm... Voter ID. Hell, well what do you know.

Johnson is still after his election because as it stands he's a passenger stuck in the runaway train of his own creation.

Talk of a deal breakthrough is still overstated too. The DUP and many of the usual ERG suspects have poured water on the idea. And many on the opposition benches are pushing hard on a confirmary ref being needed for a deal - they don't have the numbers yet, but talk is that they are close. We also have loyalist military making threats about an Irish Sea Border solution.

Time for Project Shit Meets Fan.

Don't be fooled by the word "preparedness" in that link. It should be preceded with "un" for precision.

DGRossetti · 16/10/2019 16:42

Government have tabled a motion for tomorrow to sit on Saturday.

I wonder what would happen if it lost ?

RedToothBrush · 16/10/2019 16:45

Harry Cole@mrharrycole
🚨 Diplomatic source: EU are telling HMG that DUP “is an unreliable partner” and hampering deal closing.

1922 committee meeting lasted 8 minutes.

Mujtabi Rahman @mij_europe
Sticking my neck out. Seems most likely outcome for now is an agreement on a draft legal text - late tonight, tomorrow - that wins in principle endorsement from the European Council, subject to @BorisJohnson being able to show he has a majority for it in London. Seem reasonable?

Paul Waugh @paulwaugh
.@BorisJohnson told his MPs at 1922 cttee re Brexit deal:"We are at the Hillary Step. The summit is not far. But at the moment there is still cloud around the summit. "

Did you know more people die on the descent from Everest than on the ascent.

Just saying.

Robert Peston@peston
Because Brexit talks are still "in the tunnel", Cabinet was told almost nothing about the what is being negotiated and the state of play. But ministers were struck that Attorney General Cox seemed upbeat, and assume he has seen legal text. The reason this matters is that...

AG's view in March that the backstop could be forever were the big reason why DUP and Tory Brexit Spartans rejected @theresa_may's deal. So if he genuinely believes that what @BorisJohnson is set to agree is in no sense a backstop by another name, then maybe DUP and Spartans...

will - if the deal is ever formally agreed with the EU - back Johnson's Brexit in parliament. Though this is all hypothetical, since there is as yet no deal on which MPs can be asked to give or withhold their assent

BigChocFrenzy · 16/10/2019 16:49

In effect an indicative vote on Saturday, to see if it is worth working out the details and legal text over the next weeks

What sort of majority would make it worthwhile - 2 or 20 ?
And will they even get a majority if there is no level playing field - or enough ERG votes if the LPF stays ?

BigChocFrenzy · 16/10/2019 16:51

Or the AG thinks that what is in effect a backstop is acceptable if it has the consent of NI in some kind of vote

DGRossetti · 16/10/2019 16:51

BorisJohnson told his MPs at 1922 cttee re Brexit deal:"We are at the Hillary Step.

Just when you thought life couldn't get any more meta ...

Did he really say that ? And if he did, was he aware of how it sounds ?

BigChocFrenzy · 16/10/2019 16:52

I assumed BJ meant that Barnier had put him on the Naughty Step

DGRossetti · 16/10/2019 16:55

I just saw "Hillary step" and thought of the Benn bill.

ListeningQuietly · 16/10/2019 16:58

Queues at the Hillary step result in people dying
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-48415290
so a very apt analogy methinks

DGRossetti · 16/10/2019 17:03

Queues at the Hillary step result in people dying

Is it true that more people have climbed Everest than swum the channel ????

Now that would be a talking point on the old cv ....

tobee · 16/10/2019 17:07

On another note:

Dh & i were wondering how many people, like us, shout "oh fuck off!!!!" every time the getting ready for Brexit advert comes on tv? Smile

DGRossetti · 16/10/2019 17:12

Just opened this evenings wine for dinner ...

After going through our 3rd shitty corkscrew in as many years, I finally dusted out a beautiful 2-piece corkscrew I got from a German client in 2001 as a Christmas gift (although it's actually based on an English patented design from the late 1800s).

The year after they gave me a lovely desk watch - that sits in a beautiful wooden cup. Exquisite.

Just had a tinge of sadness ...

prettybird · 16/10/2019 17:18

The MP Daniel K(Polish name) is on Sky News repeating the trope (unchallenged) that "every time the countries in the EU have referendums that the EU doesn't agree with, they are made to take them again" Angry as a reason why there shouldn't be a PV. Angry

Oakenbeach · 16/10/2019 17:20

If the Government get the support of the DUP, the deal’s very likely to pass the HoC, but even if they don’t, there are probably still enough Labour MPs who would side with the Government to get it over the line now most of the ERG seem onside... will be a close run thing though

prettybird · 16/10/2019 17:21

tobee - we I do the same Grin - also when I see the billboards. Nearly made dh crash on Sunday as I exclaimed "Oh Fuck" as we were driving to the station on Sunday and I saw a new billboard with one of the Brexit ads Blush

tobee · 16/10/2019 17:27

Solidarity with pretty in foul mouthness! Grin

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 16/10/2019 17:27

@tobee I flick the Vs at the TV when it comes on. And at any politicians I don't like.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 16/10/2019 17:31

Will Saturday be televised? What time are they sitting and how long for?

Ellie56 · 16/10/2019 17:32

So a Brexiter who said we were going to get the best deal ever is now likely to get a crap deal, even more crap than TM (a remainer)'s deal through the HOC, even though he has no majority? Hmm

Surely the sensible MPs won't buy it?

You couldn't make it up.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2019 17:32

I swear at spotify whenever a brexit advert comes on when I'm running. It really pisses me off that my escape is marred by propaganda.

tobee · 16/10/2019 17:33

Bercows 🤛 Grin

tobee · 16/10/2019 17:34

And OhYouBad and everyone else!!! Grin

Basilpots · 16/10/2019 17:35

The MP Daniel K(Polish name) is on Sky News repeating the trope

Every time he’s on the TV a ‘full fact’ amendment from the BBC or Channel4 appears in my Twitter feed correcting whatever nonsense he has just spouted.

I like to think there is a Daniel Kawczynski ‘desk’ manned at all times....
