The Pro Rogues plan to prorogue again this week.

The Queen might be challenged to sack Johnson. Or he might be forced to extend.

It depends on which newspaper you read. Either way it strikes you that no one really knows what's going to happen...

We got to Laura Kuenssberg who has an anonymous source who has information on Corbyn calling Lee Harvey Oswald a friend

Careful. To a lot of Americans an allotment is a grassy knoll.

Grinchly · 09/10/2019 16:37

Our old Corb's a commie
He wears a Commie hat...

cherin · 09/10/2019 16:38

Do you think he’s still hiding Lee Oswald’s rifle in his allotment shed? :-)

In the meantime...
The information provided by Boris Johnson to an inquiry into his relations with a US businesswoman as London mayor has been deemed "insufficient" to resolve issues raised.
The prime minister's response to a demand for details of his contacts with Jennifer Arcuri was handed over by his lawyers to the London Assembly oversight committee late on Tuesday.
But the committee said it was "frustrated" by the material provided and is now considering issuing a summons for Mr Johnson to give evidence in person

JustAnotherPoster00 · 09/10/2019 16:41

Props it up against the 2015 Ed Stone

Id love that thing in my garden if im honest

DGRossetti · 09/10/2019 16:43

Not sure if it's related, but either someone has missed a memo, or there's signs of a seismic shift somewhere ....

Falling property prices ? Uncertainty of investment ? Lack of buyers due to Londons diminishing attractiveness ?

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/oct/08/residents-of-london-peoples-estates-hail-council-move-against-developer

Hundreds of council housing residents in west London are celebrating after councillors agreed to take forward compulsory purchase order plans that could halt one one of the largest luxury developments in Europe.

The West Kensington and Gibbs Green council estates are home to more than 2,000 people. For more than a decade, the residents have lived with uncertainty about whether or not they will lose their homes as part of a 31 hectare (77 acre) development in Earl’s Court by Capital & Counties, known as Capco, a FTSE 250-listed company. The developer has planned a £12bn redevelopment of the site and refers to the project as its Earls Court Master Plan.

yolofish · 09/10/2019 16:45

I've heard that Corby also shot John Lennon...

just I'd love an Ed Stone!

Turkey and the Kurds is very worrying. Because we need something else to worry about - and don't they say that going to war is always a nationally unifying thing? (not IMO obvs)

DGRossetti · 09/10/2019 16:50

Turkey and the Kurds is very worrying.

Be curious to see how the UK fits in between the US and EU on this one. Especially given how people in the UK feel (and there's threads on MN already about it ...)

BigChocFrenzy · 09/10/2019 16:51

Something up ? Vlarge German tech company where I work
^
HR have not EMailed before about Brexit,^
but looks like they think 31 October is serious - heads up from German govt ?^ Hmm

  • because this arrived on 1 October:

Dear Mrs XXXXXXX,

we are contacting you regarding BREXIT, which is currently scheduled to take place on 31 October 2019.
As a UK National your situation could be affected by BREXIT as, after a transitional period, you would no longer be considered to be a EU citizen and^
would no longer be eligible for the rights of free movement within the EU Member States
^
Currently, there are two scenarios that could arise:

  • If the EU and the UK agree on a withdrawal before this date, there would be a transitional period until the end of 2020.
  • If there is no agreement, The UK leaves the EU and the transitional period would only last three months. ^ For both of these scenarios, you would need a residence permit to stay in Germany, which also includes a work permit. This must be applied for by you after the 31.10.2019 at your local immigration authority.

The "Landrat des Landkreises XXXXXXX Ausländeramt" is responsible for you

According to the current draft law of the federal government, the grant does not pose any major problems, so you do not have to worry about your employment at XXXXXXX

Unfortunately, we cannot provide you with more detailed information regarding deadlines for applying, this depends on whether or not there will be a termination agreement.

We will discuss the next steps with you at the appropriate time and will be happy to assist you personally with the implementation.
In the meantime there are two additional items we would recommend that you take a look at:

< links to 2 unhelpful UK govt sites !>

We are available to answer any questions you may have on this subject.

Kind regards,
XXXXXXXXXXXXX

BigChocFrenzy · 09/10/2019 16:53

btw, the transitional period they refer to in the event of No Deal is the 3 months that UK expats will have to register.

It of course doesn't mean the UK has 3 months transition

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/10/2019 17:03

It's quite a reassuring email BigChoc in that it sounds like they have your best interests at heart.

I've entered total despair about it all. I'm struggling to see any hope of things being ok today.

Twitter users mock Tory MP over ridiculous Brexit graph
By The Jouker
3 minutes

IT'S often said the Tories and LibDems have particularly little separating them – and James Cleverly seems determined to prove this is the case.

Jo Swinson's party may be the ones more associated with dodgy graphs, but it's the Tory MP making a contribution to the field this time.

Cleverly decided to step up to the plate with his explanation of why Brexit should not be delayed.

His evidence was about as strong as you've come to expect from Boris Johnson's Brexiteers, so brace yourself.

The Tory Party chairman tweeted: "Why 'more time' doesn’t actually help 'get a deal'. We want a new deal, will leave with no deal if we have to, but no more delays. #GetBrexitDone."

Accompanying that text was the below graph.

— James Cleverly MP (<strong>@JamesCleverly</strong>) October 7, 2019

Decisiveness on the y-axis, time on the x-axis. No other labels. This is Tory science at its finest.

Twitter users had plenty of fun pointing out the ridiculousness of the graph.

People act decisively on a sinking ship. Let's sink the ship. <a class="break-all" href="https://t.co/vs1wTJixFW" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">t.co/vs1wTJixFW</a>

And if him being named "Cleverly" wasn't ridiculous enough, he's the MP for Braintree...

cherin · 09/10/2019 17:07

Well, they did the right thing to get in touch, it’s just a pity that you can’t get any more definite information (none of us can, but tbh the U.K. govt has been very explicit in all documents until now, and Eu citizens in the U.K. know they have until dec 2020...)

I think the situation of pensions is also going to create massive issues. Not just the drop in value of the £ (which would drop more if we no deal) but the 25% fee we might need to pay to get the money transferred abroad, and the no guarantee of the triple lock past 2023....you would think the U.K. would be hestatic at the prospect of losing a pensioner to a foreign state- off they go, with their little pension, to get their old years treated by some other country health service....why would they create a deterrent to that?

DGRossetti · 09/10/2019 17:10

I'm guessing UK employers simply wouldn't be able to send the same notice ? Or has it become a requirement to keep employees nationality now (as opposed to right to work details) ?

cherin · 09/10/2019 17:14

No, not yet. But the guidance of government is for employers to remind employees to do it and support the application if needed. No obligation to check if they’ve actually done it or report back to government

PerkingFaintly · 09/10/2019 17:15

I swear I heard the music to "My Old Mans a Dustman" reading that ....

Not just you, DGRGrin

BigChocFrenzy · 09/10/2019 17:15

(( { kitten } )) 💐 Although the alarm bells are ringing, I still think we probably won't leave on 31 October and especially not with No Deal

Yes, the letter was reassuring and from what I hear on the grapevine, most German employers are being similarly sympathetic, although I suspect small firms may feel out of their depth.

I've never been worried about the German govt being spiteful towards me, just our own.

To cheer you up, did you read A #brexitit story with #flagsgs I posted last thread ?
Lovely & whimsical^^ 😂😂

The story of the EU, from 1950 to a deep dive into Brexit

DGRossetti · 09/10/2019 17:18

you would think the U.K. would be ecstatic at the prospect of losing a pensioner to a foreign state- off they go, with their little pension, to get their old years treated by some other country health service....why would they create a deterrent to that?

Because said pensioners can always return to the UK without two pennies to rub together, and cause a massive PR problem for whichever government is holding the parcel when they have to say "fuck off".

Plus the fact that having to house, treat and pay for such pensioners - many of whom will have paid nothing in tax & NI, won't be received with great enthusiasm by the poor sods who never went abroad and find themselves back of the queue for everything.

Although, as a social experiment, it will be fascinating to see if immigrant UK pensioners receive the same hatefest that non-UK immigrants (who worked and paid taxes) did.

If ever you needed proof that Brexit wasn't a great idea, then it's worth reflecting that whatever future you imagine for the UK, Brexit only makes it 100 times worse.

I wonder if the UK could become the first country in the world to require it's own (returning) citizens to comply with savings and healthcare rules before letting them back in. Maybe that's why successive Home Secretaries have tried so hard to get away with creating stateless individuals. Today Jihadi Jack. Tomorrow grandad Jones ?

PestyMachtubernahme · 09/10/2019 17:22

"A Number 10 source said that Leo V was dressed as a leprechaun, kept saying 'Top of the morning to ye' and, confronted by Johnson's incredible charisma, agreed to forget about the backstop in return for a multi-pack of Taytos"

I thought Corby shot Kennedy and Dirty Den.

The propaganda and blame game is starting to drive me nuts.

thecatfromjapan · 09/10/2019 17:25

mrslaughin To be fair, the next manifesto (despite the post-Conference headlines) won't be crazy socialist.

It's shaping up to be quite nice (honestly), with a lot of emphasis on Green pledges.

A lot of the Conference things will be watered down but -crucially - Labour won't be able to backtrack on those FOM motions. That pretty much kills Lexit and that horrible nativist streak Labour was showing.

So it's not all bad. Really.

I really hope people read the manifesto - not just the headlines.

I sometimes think people like Owen Jones and Ash Sharkar do Labour more harm than good. 🤷‍♀️

tobee · 09/10/2019 17:29

Ash Sarkar is an idiot

thecatfromjapan · 09/10/2019 17:29

OYBBK

Chin up! 💐💐💐

It's bumpy but worth remembering the numbers who want Brexit keep falling - and the numbers who want a PV are higher than they've ever been.

Reasons to be cheerful ... and keep hoping.

And I'll be looking out for you on the 29th. 🙂

thecatfromjapan · 09/10/2019 17:30

tobee I keep vacillating between thinking that - and then telling myself off for being mean.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/10/2019 17:35

I don't know anything about a 25% fee, cherin ? < gulp >
Is that the tax penalty or something, to move an entire private pension fund ?

I retained my UK building society account, so when the time comes my state pension would be paid into that monthly
I assume I would just transfer it over say annually, with the usual small conversion cost to Euros that I had before.

Luckily, my other pensions are all German, so I'm not much affected by Sterling or UK tax.

It is v much in the interests of the UK govt to keep up the (EU) S1 system of repaying the host country healthcare, as in the WA:

the HoC Committee last year heard that it is substantially cheaper when a pensioner is in the EU than in the UK

The last thing the NHS - and the social care system - needs is up to 300,000 pensioners returning to the UK.
As well as the expense, they should be aware of the difficulty of finding extra hospital beds & services, GP surgeries, staff ....
