Have to make this quick.

Johnson has made an 'offer' to the EU. Let's stress this isn't a deal because they haven't agreed.

The EU have made kind noises about it but will say no thanks.

The UK are expecting this, and despite what's been said apparently are expecting more negotiation on this.

The DUP and the ERG seem to be on board with the proposal meaning in theory Johnson might have numbers to get through parliament. Except its not a deal so this is currently meaningless.

Parliament is prorogued again from next week with the Queen's Speech the following week.

Is it worth emailing him via theyworkforyou Bercows ? That way his lack of response gets rolled up into his stats about his lack of work?

And yes, I know some of them neither care nor need to work as a monkey with the correct coloured rosette would get in, but at least it goes on record Grin

MockersthefeMANist · 03/10/2019 12:21

Chastened Hulk has reverting to Bruce Banner mode.

The variable answers to the customs check question are all over the place: Sometimes there will be no checks 'at the border,' sometimes 'at or near the border,' and just once, 'or anywhere else,' but that may, or may not, have been a reference to new facilities, not the checks.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/10/2019 12:28

I'm missing it all due to crap public transport. Perhaps it's just as well.

prettybird · 03/10/2019 12:28

Sam Coates saying that there is now a sense that there is now a majority in the HoC to get the proposals now on the table through.

That is not the sense that I get Confused

Even discounting the inconvenient fact that the EU won't agree. Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 03/10/2019 12:29

Brilliant post elements 🏅and very informative

I've read Orwell of course - not realising he just got the bloody year wrong - but hadn't read Dawkin's "signalling"theory

prettybird · 03/10/2019 12:33

Is this yet another example of Schrödinger?

It's a Schrödinger's Border ++: simultaneously not existing but also existing in multiple places Confused

Myriade · 03/10/2019 12:34

PMK

BigChocFrenzy · 03/10/2019 12:36

I understand your concern, Mship but stopping the prosecutions now would send a far worse signal to the Nationalist community that politics trumps the law and justice,
especially with the govt so obviously leaning towards the DUP since May 2017

I agree about the timing being unfortunate - it would have been so much better several years ago, before Brexit inflamed the situation

Jeux sans Frontiers?

'If looks could kill, they probably will...'

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 03/10/2019 12:40

"Statesmanship and ingenuity" is he having a laugh?

bellinisurge · 03/10/2019 12:46

Grease-Smug keeps touching his nose - Liar? Coke fiend? Utterly out of his depth and uncomfortable about it?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 03/10/2019 12:46

Schrödinger’s cat is going to vote for and against the deal that has the border that isn’t a border

Money on all 3

Peregrina · 03/10/2019 12:53

I wouldn't go for 'uncomfortable about it', with Grease-Smug. What has he got to be uncomfortable about; he was born to rule, dontcha know.

Ellie56 · 03/10/2019 12:54

I wonder how many MPs are now wishing they hadn't been so keen to:

a) Force Theresa May out
b) Vote down the WA
c) Prevent TM from bringing the WA back for the fourth time.

The Johnson shit show even makes her running backwards and forwards to Brussels look reasonable.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/10/2019 13:18

Lewis Goodall@lewis_goodall

Not at all clear from that intervention that Bill Cash will vote for even this deal.

Some of the “Spartans” will come on board. I will eat my hat if they all do.

The talk of a majority for these proposals have already been massively overhyped.

< and the EU definitely won't accept it anyway >

BigChocFrenzy · 03/10/2019 13:19

Lewis Goodall@lewis_goodall

Sylvia Hermon, independent unionist MP (and only representative of NI in the chamber today):
< DUP cba ? >

“The Prime Minister’s proposals demonstrate that he does not understand Northern Ireland...

The DUP do not represent the people of Northern Ireland.”

BigChocFrenzy · 03/10/2019 13:29

My Wild idea ?

  • if Labour can't telerate an ex-Tory as PM, noone can stand Corbyn and any other Labour MP would be regarded as a threat to him .......

Why not make Lady Hermon the temporary PM ? Hmm

Especially since the Rebel Alliance seem to just want an extension and a GE before it ends
As an lone NI independent, reportedly retiring at the next GE, having her as caretaker PM during a GE avoids giving incumbency advantage to any party

No rebel MP has any grudge against her, or questions her integrity,
even if any disagree with her moderate Unionist / Alliance stand

Might even reassure quite a lot of NI, too

Just a radical idea to break the rebel deadlock, if MPs / advisers really do read Westministenders Wink

prettybird · 03/10/2019 13:30

That's not a bad idea BigChoc Grin

Inniu · 03/10/2019 13:42

Has there been an Irish UK Prime Minister since the Duke of Wellington?

TheMShip · 03/10/2019 13:42

@BigChocFrenzy Definitely the prosecutions must go ahead, you're right that it's just unfortunate timing. I didn't grow up here, but I've heard a lot about what it was like during the Troubles in Scotland, which has its own sectarian problems. I don't want that for my kids.

bellinisurge · 03/10/2019 13:44

@Inniu , there has certainly never been a Catholic one.

TheMShip · 03/10/2019 13:49

Didn't Blair convert? Or was that later?

MockersthefeMANist · 03/10/2019 13:55

Has there been an Irish UK Prime Minister since the Duke of Wellington?

...there has certainly never been a Catholic one.

Tony Blair was accepted into the RC church in 2007.

James Callaghan's father was Irish.

Christopher Hope @christopherhope
^Boris Johnson's suggestion that he will consider a vote in the Commons before the EU summit on Oct 17/18 looks wise.
If the PM gets it through it will make it much harder for the EU to reject it. #BrexitDeal^

Cos that worked with the Malthouse Compromise...

... and no it won't make it harder for the EU to reject
