Westminstenders: The Slow No

Have to make this quick.

Johnson has made an 'offer' to the EU. Let's stress this isn't a deal because they haven't agreed.

The EU have made kind noises about it but will say no thanks.

The UK are expecting this, and despite what's been said apparently are expecting more negotiation on this.

The DUP and the ERG seem to be on board with the proposal meaning in theory Johnson might have numbers to get through parliament. Except its not a deal so this is currently meaningless.

Parliament is prorogued again from next week with the Queen's Speech the following week.

Jo Swinson could help if she stopped all the nonsense about not backing him in a temporary govt

Firstly, you give her too much power... Even if the LDs did back JC, they would still be short.

Secondly, if we get to late October and it becomes certain that BJ is going to evade the Benn Act, that will concentrate minds on all sides... There’s no need to dance to Corbyn as PM at the moment. If that moment does come, and Swinson et al grudgingly support Corbyn, it’s Corbyn who will look bad for insisting on putting his own ambition over national interest. (Of course, if none of them agree, it’ll be a plague on all their houses)

Thirdly, if she supports Corbyn now, she’ll be made out to be a Corbyn stooge (vote LD - get Corbyn), which would do untold damage to the LDs and their championing of Remain cause.

It’s a tightrope, but she’d be daft to support Corbyn unless there genuinely is no alternative. The LDs would unnecessarily likely lose a chunk of their current support if she did so. Opinium polls consistently poll LDs poorly (5% below EU election result) and their support was not in line with all it September polls bar the last one.

As I’ve mentioned before, JC can only really lose by his obstinate insistence on becoming temporary PM, however events unfold.

Oakenbeach · 06/10/2019 09:55

their (LD) support was in line with all its (Opinium) September polls bar the last one.

Oakenbeach · 06/10/2019 10:00

The Opinium poll data sheets didn’t appear until Monday last week. They are confusing to read.

It was also carried out in the immediate aftermath of the Johnson “deal” which is likely to have wrong-footed waverers who potentially saw a solution.

mrslaughan · 06/10/2019 10:06

I know this is from the Daily fail. But there is an article saying Geoffrey Cox will resign is Bozo doesn't comply with the Benn law. Interesting- are they going to swing and paint Bozo as the villain?

Also buried in the article is the comment thy Bozo wanted to meet Macron and Merkel this weekend and they declined to reorganise their diaries for him. His divide in conquer strategy has failed......and he is learning pretty quickly, I suspect, that nobody outside the UK actually gives a fuck that he went to Eton.....

I'm a great fan of stubby pencils on strings for general elections and other national votes.

For the 3rd referendum, I'd give a postal vote to every single UK national resident anywhere in the EU. I'd give it to all 16 year olds, and to anyone under 16 who could pass a basic general knowledge test about the EU. It's their future.

Wonder how many of these were polled?

prettybird · 06/10/2019 10:15

In the same way, Frost/the UK delegation apparently wanted to work over the weekend but Barnier said No because the proposals "do not provide a basis for concluding an agreement” and that negotiations would re-start on Monday when the UK would given "another opportunity to present its proposals in detail” ie do its homework again Wink

NoWordForFluffy · 06/10/2019 10:15

I suspect that many in the U.K. also don't GAF about Etonian credentials!

I think BoZo may well find himself to be the fall guy here. Oh dear.

MockersthefeMANist · 06/10/2019 10:21

The one constant in the Tory Party is that it clings to winners and disposes of losers in short order.

Hoooo · 06/10/2019 10:31

Room for a small(ish)! one on the bench??

JustAnotherPoster00 · 06/10/2019 10:35

Jesus its lonely on my lefty bench Grin

HeyNotInMyName · 06/10/2019 10:41

Have I imagined that Bercow has been proposed to be the ‘national unity leader’??

I’m thinking that THAT could be actually a good idea and quite acceptable by many people.

Mistigri · 06/10/2019 10:53

If that means getting behind the official leader of the opposition then that is what has to be done, whether we like it or not. Swinson has to swallow her pride, but then she is a lib dem so won't

Alternatively, Corbyn could swallow his pride and "do what has to be done"?

What's good for the goose is good for the gander, after all.

This silly blame game is part of the problem not part of the solution, and it is mainly directed at Swinson for blatantly and transparently partisan reasons.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/10/2019 10:55

"who else can actually make a difference right now?"

The Tories, who are responsible for the entire Brexit project - they should vote out their leader
Rather than demanding the Opposition change their leader

The guilty people should change, rather than an incomopetent bystander

Ellie56 · 06/10/2019 10:56

When TM finally started talking to Labour back in the summer didn't they come up with a revised WA? (Which she wouldn't accept?)

Would the EU accept the amendments and more to the point would the revised WA now get through Parliament?

Bearbehind · 06/10/2019 10:58

However he has got to be better than this shit.

Replacing one type of shit with another isn’t exactly an appealing choice though is it?

This isn’t about blame for what has already happened, it’s about looking at who has any way of making a difference now.

Bearbehind · 06/10/2019 11:00

The guilty people should change, rather than an incomopetent bystander

But this is exactly the point I was making - ‘the guilty people’ have more support in the polls than the ‘incompetent bystander’ so the former has no incentive to change.

prettybird · 06/10/2019 11:01

I consider myself to be left wing Grin - but am in Scotland so have the viable option of the SNP Wink

I'm soooo glad I'm not in England so don't have the dilemma. Although I'm coming round to my dad's opinion (he's usually right Smile) that I'd have to vote Labour to stop worse happening, after having a heated energetic discussion with him in August Grin

Ellie56 · 06/10/2019 11:01

"Boris Johnson will 'sabotage' the EU by vetoing its budget and causing diplomatic havoc if Brussels forces him to delay Brexit"

I thought we had no power in the EU? Hmm Confused

BigChocFrenzy · 06/10/2019 11:02

"The Tiggs and expelled Tories are not going to make Corbyn PM. Can people not grasp this?"

Then they are choosing No Deal over a few days of Corbyn
Good to know which MPs not to vote for in the GE

Labour are not going to make a (not very ex)-Tory PM. Can people not grasp this ?

Or give a boost to LDem, SNP, Plaid credibility before a GE

Or choose another Labour MP and hence strengthen the chances of that wing of the party taking over after Corbyn steps down

There is only 1 MP who is irrelevant to GB politics and that is Lady Hermon
However, I don't expect 321 MPs to climb down enough even to vote for someone neutral

prettybird · 06/10/2019 11:04

Speaking of my dad, I haven't posted this ear-worm yet this thread Wink. You're welcome Grin

I still can't get over how apposite it still is, even though it was first uploaded in July 2016 Shock ....but then, this particular cunt hasn't changed his spots Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 06/10/2019 11:06

The Rebel Alliance, like the whole HoC, can not agree on anything they all want, enough to put aside their own preferences

Basilpots · 06/10/2019 11:08

Boris Johnson will 'sabotage' the EU by vetoing its budget and causing diplomatic havoc if Brussels forces him to delay Brexit"

Thereby even further alienating the very people we want to negotiate a favourable trade deal with. Bravo !! Well done excellent negotiating strategy Confused
