Westministenders: Conference Cult

Is it over yet?

The Tory Party Conference is in full swing in the Manchester Rain, and is proving to be its usual fun.

Johnson is caught up in all sorts of allegations of abuses of power - the non-declaration of his "friendship" to a busty blonde whom was getting a large tax payer grant, and then there the Odey question after his sister said he was under the control of the Hedge Funders.

And thats before we talk about the 40 hospitals, his provocative language and how many times he can say the word surrender.

There is lots of distancing from Lyton Crosby. And accusations that Johnson has gone 'rogue' only listening to the wisdom of Cummings and Symonds.

The Queen apparently has asked for advice as to under what circumstance she can dismiss a PM.

AND NO ONE IS EVEN TALKING ABOUT A DEAL.

And can the executive be embodied in the person of the queen?

...runs away.

Her Maj would actually strangle Boris with her bare hands if he put her in that position.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 20:07

Thanks, crackly It's excellent that Rogers dealt with that point

Makes sense.
In any business deal, you would always need to be 100% sure that the person you are dealing with has the legal authority
And the EU are sticklers for detail when it comes to legal agreements

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 20:08

She'd turn the Corgis onto him
I heard rumours that staff say that they are bitey little sods

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 20:12

On reflection, that leaked deal with 3 borders is so incredibly stupid, that I hope it was just a fake from Cummings,
so when we see the real thing it looks more reasonable

Icantreachthepretzels · 01/10/2019 20:13

I'm sad to say that I'm pretty sure the corgis are all dead.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 20:16

EU say they won't let Uk restart from zero
i.e. Uk won't leave on 31 October with BJ's proposals if it is totally different from May's

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/10/2019 20:16

Talk of HMQ reminds me f the fact that Nicholas Soames is a very close friend of Prince Charles.

Wonder if Charles has his mother's ear in these matters?

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 20:17

pretzels Shock What do you mean they are all dead ?

Random18 · 01/10/2019 20:17

Would the EU accept the letter from the Queen?

She is head of state- albeit in name only.

If a law was passed that she had to sign it would that be a way around it?

I know it is very unlikely to happen as they don't want to involve her.

My honest thoughts- they need to be prepared to revoke. BJ will not sign the Extension - well ok we are prepared to stop the clock!

Don't imagine any of them are brave enough for that though - and it wouldn't go down well with many of the electorate - bit wants to stop BJ doing No Deal if he wins an election?

Corgis superseded by dorgis

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/10/2019 20:20

BigChoc she stopped breeding them a few years ago because she didn't want to leave any behind when she died.

The last Royal Corgi died last year. (Wikipedia)

Grinchly · 01/10/2019 20:21

Whaaa? Corgis dead?
JRM referred to meet g them at the famous PC meeting at Balmoral.
I think we should be told!

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 20:22

Yes, HMQ has an indirect info line to the rebels, so she's know what to expect from them at least
Soames would never lie to either of them

Grieve claims she would sack BJ immediately if he openly refused to extend
But .... she then would have to ask someone else to be PM
and that person has to agree
and then has to have the confidence of the HoC, i.e. a majority of votes.

More to the point, she would hate being dragged into politics
and many Brexiters would never forgive her

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 20:22

Oh Bore That's rather sad

Grinchly · 01/10/2019 20:23

Oh Bore! SadBut sensible I guess.
PoW and Camilla are terrier people I think?

HoneyandSpice · 01/10/2019 20:28

@NoWordForFluffy I totally agree with you. And I feel I'm seeing this whole shit storm through your eyes

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 20:32

This is the new Scottish case that Jo Maugham is bringing, so that the court would ask for an extension
Almost certainly would go to the Supreme Court later, whatever the decision

The problem is whether the EU stick to what they said and refuse to consider a request that is not from the executive

Again, imo ludicrous that the rebels can't agree on a new PM, for whom the EU would almost certainly grant an extension
and then we wouldn't need all these dreadfully divisive legal cases

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/oct/01/anti-brexiters-in-legal-bid-to-force-boris-johnson-to-ask-eu-for-delay

Vince’s legal action was originally due to be heard by the inner house next Tuesday
because it has a power unique within the UK to take action if someone refuses to do something they are legally obliged to do.

That authority is known as the nobile officium,
and Vince, Maugham and Cherry are likely to ask the inner house to use those powers to write to the EU seeking the extension on the prime minister’s behalf if he refuses to do so.

GingerPCatt · 01/10/2019 20:34

I’m not sure I’m remembering correctly, but did at one point parliament vote on attaching a PV to the WA? Is this something they could try again?
As a remainer (but really more of a let’s avoid Armageddon-er) I could support that. The ERG would vote against it (fuckers) but labour could vote for it as PV is part of their strategy. But I guess the blind brexshit/political declaration could be a stumbling block as it’s still undefined.
Plus if parliament could pass that before the 31st, I don’t think the EU would have (as many or as strong) reservations about granting an extension.

About the corgis's being bitey - there was one hilarious moment in one royal family doco (around HMQ 99th?)- when Prince Charles with some humour recounted he had been bitten quite a lot by them as a child...... at least he had a bit of a sense of humour about it.....

borntobequiet · 01/10/2019 20:37

He’ll probably just manage the offensive bit
Too true

Icantreachthepretzels · 01/10/2019 20:37

What do you mean they are all dead ?

I heard the last one died a couple of years ago and she didn't replace it because - being so old - any new dog was likely to outlive her and that wasn't fair on them.

Icantreachthepretzels · 01/10/2019 20:39

She'll have to turn the DofE on him instead!

I fear BJ and Pip would probably find they had a lot in common - and it would be the makings of a new buddy comedy.

Importconundrums · 01/10/2019 20:40

Namechanged because this is so specific to my work, but I’ve been here a while...

Cherin very kindly sent me the slides from the get ready for Brexit workshop and I fell down a hideous rabbit hole at work all day as a result. If anyone sensible has any ideas then I’d love to hear them, or any idea of who on earth I should ask...

So we import machinery that has a CE mark. If we no deal then CE Marks are no longer valid and we have to use the UKCA mark. Except that in order to use the UKCA mark the machines would have to be certified by a UK qualified inspection body, which doesn’t exist. So we can’t use CE and we can’t use UKCA Confused Ideas on a postcard because I’d really like to still have a job by the end of the year...
