“Shameful. I've lost all respect for lady hale.“
Why?

Walkingdeadfangirl · 06/10/2019 22:41

“Shameful. I've lost all respect for lady hale.“
She has done the equivalent of ruling something was not racist and then going to a party where she blacked up.

Of course Judges have personal opinions but they should be kept private. Once they start parading their personal opinion in public they become partial.

MysteryTripAgain · 07/10/2019 03:36

I disagree, under 25s who notoriously don't vote have become far more politically aware during the last 3 years and are much more likely to vote Labour than any other demographic

Do you think students have forgotten the lie Labour told about student loans being scrapped.

frumpety · 07/10/2019 06:41

Fangirl can you describe how Lady Hale's behaviour is shameful ? What did she do that upset you particularly ?

rosie39forever · 07/10/2019 06:58

The last labour gov Blair/ Briown didn't promise to scrap uni fees they positively supported fees as they weren't labour they were pink torys. It's the current Labour Party who have promised to scrap frees but seen as how they're not in power are not able to do so. The Lib Dem's on the other hand did exactly that when propping up Cameron's government.

bellinisurge · 07/10/2019 07:00

Hardly going on Love Island to say she's a girly swot and proud if it.
It's an expression that has become trendy because the PM used it as an insult. Being a girly swot, especially if her generation, was really hard.
Why is calling yourself a girly swot or even a big girl's blouse (I am both) a bad thing?

It's not like she said Johnson is a twat.
Johnson is a twat.

BertrandRussell · 07/10/2019 08:41

What was it she said? “Let’s hear it for the girly swots!”

Hardly a political opinion...

PierreBezukov · 07/10/2019 09:24

What was it she said? “Let’s hear it for the girly swots!"

It was a reference to Boris Johnson. Perhaps not a political opinion, but a politically-motivated comment. It has demeaned her position, no doubt about that. Her public rhetoric should be devoid of politics.

Statesmanlikeship and professionalism in public office no longer exists these days it would appear.

jasjas1973 · 07/10/2019 10:00

Well then jas the top top judge said it wasn't their business and kept out of it

This is true but the High Court then gave right of appeal to be the Supreme court, not appeal court or if they were that certain, no appeal.

That is their function to look at decisions made in lower courts and make the final decision and that is what they have done.

What Hale said after the event is immaterial.

Aside, had the SC gone with Johnson, there would then have been absolutely nothing to stop a PM proroguing Parliament for 51 weeks out of 52 and then doing it again.

Proroguing should only ever be used for the state opening of Parliament and only a few days needed, so, Major shouldn't have done it either.

BertrandRussell · 07/10/2019 10:08

“It was a reference to Boris Johnson. Perhaps not a political opinion, but a politically-motivated comment.”

What- because it quoted a politician?

bellinisurge · 07/10/2019 13:31

We complain if judges are so out of touch they don't know who the Kardashians are, or whatever. And so if a judge knows that "girly swot " is a current phrase that people are using and having a laugh with, it means that she is ...well, I'm not sure what the accusation is.

DustyDiamond · 07/10/2019 13:56

The pretend bemusement on this thread re Lady Hale is ridiculous

She was stood in front of the image of this newspaper headline

"Spider woman takes down Hulk: viewers transfixed by judges brooch as ruling crushes PM"

And referred to 'girly swot' - the redacted (but since leaked) part of a memo sent by BJ which formed part of the evidence in the court case

Agree or disagree as to whether she is remaining above politics & retaining an impartial impression, whatever. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But pretending that you 'just can't possibly understand' how some people can think her actions are not prudent at this time is to be deliberately disingenuous

howabout · 07/10/2019 14:06

Not sure Lady Hale actually joined the dots on what she was saying.

Johnson referred to David Cameron as "a girly swot". Using the term herself reinforces the implied misogyny and homophobia in the generic term. It also puts her on the side of Cameron who started the whole Constitutional mess with the FTPA and his penchant for ill defined Referendums.

My Gran was one of the first degree educated female teachers. She strongly objected to terms such as girly swot. I am quite surprised Lady Hale doesn't feel likewise.

PierreBezukov · 07/10/2019 14:09

Bertrand because of quoting BJ in reference to herself, and the context of standing in front of a poster mocking BJ.

PierreBezukov · 07/10/2019 14:12

Overall, very disappointing that she entered the political fray and it has demeaned not just herself but her position and that of the Supreme Court and its supposed impartiality.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 07/10/2019 14:31

ODFOD 🙄

ContinuityError · 07/10/2019 16:38

Using the term herself reinforces the implied misogyny and homophobia in the generic term

Suspect she was being at least partly ironic, given that the speech was to Association of State Girls’ Schools’ leaders.

frumpety · 07/10/2019 19:11

So she put something someone else had written about her on a slide and used the term girly swot, a term that was not invented by the current PM , but used by him in the past to describe a previous PM. A term that most of the population will have used at some point, it does have a slightly derogatory whiff about it, being girly and clever and applying yourself ( an expert ? ) is often seen as a bad thing. Quite nice to see someone reclaiming the phrase and using it ironically Smile

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 07/10/2019 20:22

No surprise the EU27 rejected it as anyone with half a brain could see it was a crock of shit. This is going to take a decade to iron out.

Parker231 · 07/10/2019 20:27

It wasn’t rocket science to see that the EU weren’t going to go anywhere with Boris proposals. So now an extension - will it be until January or for the two years which has been mentioned?

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 07/10/2019 20:29

Certain posters seemed to think he'd got it in the bag though Grin

Lonelycrab · 07/10/2019 20:37

Statesmanlikeship and professionalism in public office no longer exists these days it would appear.

Hmm and you’re a BJ fan, yeah? You couldn’t make this shit up.

Lonelycrab · 07/10/2019 20:39

time at the bar

I need to mop up and get home- there’s bile all over the floor. Come on!
