The only thing I know for sure is that Corbin hasn't got a snowballs chance in hell.
I disagree, under 25s who notoriously don't vote have become far more politically aware during the last 3 years and are much more likely to vote Labour than any other demographic, so if they turn out in numbers I think Labour could scrape a small majority, enough to form a coalition with the SNP.

gonnamythme · 06/10/2019 19:12

I was talking specifically about where I’m from, as it’s a staunch leave area but I still can’t put my finger on which way the wind is blowing (apart from that it’s not blowing in Corbyn’s direction).

Agreed, the younger voters will to go Labour (if they vote).

gonnamythme · 06/10/2019 19:18

The common thread between the leavers I know and the remainers that I know, is disgust for Corbyn.

I count myself in there too.

rosie39forever · 06/10/2019 19:29

I'm from a large university town, one of the biggest universities in the country and loads of colleges and the support for labour is massive (although we have Tory MP with a tiny majority) The students are very politically engaged and really active in the community. I haven't seen student activism like it since my uni days during the poll tax demos.

frumpety · 06/10/2019 19:30

The thing with prorogation, I don't think it was really Brexit related, if it was, what has Parliament achieved in the time back with bums on seats ?
What in actual fact could they achieve ?
This was a case of Boris having a go at flexing his muscles and pushing boundaries, seeing where the land lies if he does something unusual and outside the norm. He got put back in his place. This is not what is important, what is important is the medias reaction to it, the voting public's reaction to it, how they view the Judiciary and their alleged bias. It is interesting to see the reactions on here to their ruling , interesting but not surprising.

Mistigri · 06/10/2019 19:35

As far as I can tell parliament has done bugger all with relation to Brexit since it has been back.

Parliament can't do anything unless it uses a nuclear option (eg VONC) because it's the government that controls what business is done in parliament.

What parliament has done is progress important legislation, such as the domestic abuse bill (which has its second reading last week) - legislation that would have fallen away if parliament had been prorogued.

gonnamythme · 06/10/2019 19:36

That’s nice hear. The general attitude towards politics when I went to university was complete apathy.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 06/10/2019 19:42

Obviously polls can be wrong but todays gave Boris a 15 point lead. He must be doing something right. And the libdems are not soaking up leavers at only 15%

Bearbehind · 06/10/2019 19:43

That not necessarily just a mark of how good people think BJ is, it’s how shite they think JC is.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 06/10/2019 19:47

I dont remember Lawyers saying that was their reason for stopping prorogation. It was all about the Brexit, guess lawyers can lie as well.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 06/10/2019 19:52

how good people think BJ is, it’s how shite they think JC is
Well there are other parties and you dont have to vote. So must be some people supporting what Boris is doing.

rosie39forever · 06/10/2019 19:59

That 15 point lead was the you gov poll which are right wing run and notoriously way out, they are the ones who predicted that May would win with a landslide! All polls need to be taken with a pinch of salt as are biased one way or another and are conducted in their own echo chambers.

Mistigri · 06/10/2019 20:04

The lawyers brought the prorogation case because they believed government had acted unlawfully.

They were right.

frumpety · 06/10/2019 20:05

Good point Misti about the domestic abuse bill.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 06/10/2019 20:10

What law was broken?
Can you explain why it was ok for John Major to prorogue for 3 weeks to avoid a cash for questions scandal but it wasn't for Boris?

ContinuityError · 06/10/2019 20:13

What law was broken?

What’s the difference between illegal and unlawful?

gonnamythme · 06/10/2019 20:18

Can you explain why it was ok for John Major to prorogue for 3 weeks to avoid a cash for questions scandal but it wasn't for Boris?

Nobody is saying that it wasn’t. It might well have been illegal. Nobody brought a case against the government on that occasion, so we will never know.

Mistigri · 06/10/2019 20:22

The U.K. constitution is not codified. It is made up of decisions like the Supreme Court one. They didn't find that Johnson "broke a law" (because the U.K. constitution isn't written down as a series of laws on the statute book) but that he had exceeded his powers and that prorogation was therefore unlawful.

It's not impossible that Major also acted unlawfully, but no one asked the question.

DustyDiamond · 06/10/2019 20:32

That 15 point lead was the you gov poll which are right wing run and notoriously way out,

The 15 point lead was Opinium

Last YouGov one had 11 point lead a few days ago

Overall, the polls were tracking at an average of 8 point lead for Tories last week

All polls need to be taken with a pinch of salt

Agree

jasjas1973 · 06/10/2019 20:46

So its ok for the head Judge in the UK to be publicly biased as long as the other ones are as well?

They are top judges for a reason, in their careers they have faced many situations where their personal views may be in conflict with what they are presiding over but they are trained and have the experience to put that to one side.
Just because a decision doesn't go your way does not mean they are biased.... it just means they didn't agree with you!

The courts are the last thing between civil society and chaos, we should respect the independence of the judiciary or face the consequences.
If they had deemed the prorogation legal, then that would have been ok too.

What Parliament does or does not do with the extra time is immaterial.

howabout · 06/10/2019 20:48

The Opinium poll is interesting because it shows LibDem vote flipping back to Labour but then Labour losing compensating Leavers. Net result is 38% Con and 12% Bxt Prty.

Polling looks predictable given shifts in Labour and LibDem positions re Labour becoming more Remain and LibDem continuing to distance themselves from Left of Centre coalition / co-operation.

HateIsNotGood · 06/10/2019 20:56

The thing is...the polls are mainly irrelevant...each party/interest group has their own criteria for when they think the time to move for a GE is different.

I think it's mightily possible that BJ would go as far as accepting imprisonment rather than a 'nondescript' request for an extension. Why wouldn't he? Obviously there are many other variations that could happen prior to that, but it should be accepted that BJ will take it all the way.

Imnotthrowingawaymyshot · 06/10/2019 22:14

Well then jas the top top judge said it wasn't their business and kept out of it Confused

It's embarrassing. This is embarrassing. They are literally sticking fingers on nose going..

Ner ner na ner neeeer.

Shameful. I've lost all respect for lady hale.

Imnotthrowingawaymyshot · 06/10/2019 22:15

It would be something to see Boris in jail.

BertrandRussell · 06/10/2019 22:17

“Can you explain why it was ok for John Major to prorogue for 3 weeks to avoid a cash for questions scandal but it wasn't for Boris?“

It probably wasn’t OK- but nobody challenged it so we’ll never know....
