Every time a Brexiter posts something callous or ignorant about Ireland I'm going to paste the story of one of the 186 children who died in the Troubles. Because if there is one thing we can all agree on, perhaps it is that no child should die because of Brexit.

When 14-year-old Philip Rafferty left his home in west Belfast to go to band practice, his mother, Maureen, made sure he was wearing his new winter coat. The next time she saw it was in a plastic bag at his inquest, saturated with blood.

On January 30th, 1973, Philip was on his way home when he was abducted from the street by loyalist paramilitaries. He was taken to the Giant’s Ring, outside Belfast, where they hooded him with his coat, beat him, and then shot him several times.

He was 14. RIP Philip.

Mistigirl I read that article this morning, it deeply sad and horrifying, unfortunately I don't think they care. The chaos will be over in Ireland or they just dismiss it.
To quote Mystery 'If people on the island of Ireland can’t be neighbours and live with each other, that does not provide a veto over UK leaving EU.'
As if the reason the Troubles started was because people just didn't get alongConfused

bellinisurge · 05/10/2019 13:54

@Mistigri thank you isn't the right phrase but it's all I have.

blubberyboo · 05/10/2019 14:23

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinn_brothers'_killings

This is the kind of thing that happens when tensions get high and start to snowball.

We don’t want this to start again. No child deserves to die like this. These boys died shouting for their mummy because their feet were burning.

A customs border is enough to kick it all off again because people will want it gone even if they have to rip it down with their bare hands. Neither side wants a hard border but people will start to take sides once soldiers police or customs officials start to get killed or injured and this will lead to civilians getting killed as above

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 05/10/2019 18:07

BBC 2 right now is showing what we buy and sell in a day and how it all works.

Finerumpus · 05/10/2019 21:07

It’s a good job that GB, NI & Eire don’t want a hard isn’t it?

Finerumpus · 05/10/2019 22:06

A hard border

MysteryTripAgain · 05/10/2019 22:26

Thought the logic of Johnson’s proposal for checks away from the border was that there would be no hard border.

Mistigri · 05/10/2019 22:28

Under Johnson's plans there will be two borders.

This puts at risk the GFA. If the truce brokered by the GFA breaks, children will die. Is that what you want?

Nine-year-old Patrick Rooney, the first child to die as a result of the Troubles, was killed inside his own home. “They can’t say to me he was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” his father Neely told the Irish News. “He was in his home when he was shot dead.”

Voila212 · 05/10/2019 22:29

Unfortunately finerumpus Boris agreement is worse for NI and will create a hard border at any stage with the 4 years vote, so there is no stability for businesses.

Finerumpus · 05/10/2019 22:31

What does the GFA say about the border?

Bearbehind · 05/10/2019 22:32

Thought the logic of Johnson’s proposal for checks away from the border was that there would be no hard border.

This pretty much sums up the extent of Leavers ‘thinking’

bellinisurge · 05/10/2019 22:33

You think Ireland doesn't care about the Holocaust and that Germany wants to take over the world. Perhaps you could spend some time finding out why that is fucking nasty ignorant bullshit.

A border is a border is a border.
Read this to find out a bit more about the impact of this nonsense.

MysteryTripAgain · 05/10/2019 22:35

What does the GFA say about the border?

No specific mention of borders in the GFA, but talks about self determination and mutual consent.

bellinisurge · 05/10/2019 22:37

Mystery, you claim Ireland doesn't care about the Holocaust and that Germany wants to take over the world.

Mistigri · 05/10/2019 22:38

All the border communities voted to remain.

This is why:

"[Karen McAllister´s] younger sister, four-year-old Siobhan McCabe, was shot and killed in 1975 as they ran home from their granny’s house across the street.

“In the park, they’d be shooting through the railings so everybody would lie under the roundabout, and when it stopped you got back up and got back on again. Imagine that nowadays. We didn’t know anything else. It was just the way it was.”

MysteryTripAgain · 05/10/2019 22:38

This pretty much sums up the extent of Leavers ‘thinking’

So what is the solution? Lots of negatives posted, but not many suggestions going around.

Bearbehind · 05/10/2019 22:41

The backstop - what is actually wrong with something that only comes into play if we don’t sort our shit out in the first place?

bellinisurge · 05/10/2019 22:41

The solution starts with reading @Mistigri 's posts.

Mistigri · 05/10/2019 22:43

The solution is the backstop, or to remain.

It is imperative to prevent a hard border, because neither leavers nor remainers should be prepared to take the smallest risk with what is already a fragile peace. Enough children have died in sectarian violence. Remainers and leavers must unite to say "no more".

Lesley Gordon from Magheraa^ in south Derry ... was killed in 1978 along with her father Willie, a school welfare officer and part-time member of the UDR, as he was about to drive her and her brother to primary school. The IRA bomb had been hidden in a cavity in the car.

MysteryTripAgain · 05/10/2019 22:46

The backstop - what is actually wrong with something that only comes into play if we don’t sort our shit out in the first place?

DUP view is that backstop goes against the GFA in that it changes the status of NI from UK.

Also has the risk of locking UK into EU permanently. The legal advice that Theresa May attempted to hide from the public made it clear that EU could reject any suggestion made by UK without reason.

Finerumpus · 05/10/2019 22:47

There is no appetite for a hard border. The war in Ireland wasn’t caused by a border.

MysteryTripAgain · 05/10/2019 22:48

The solution is the backstop, or to remain

Vote was leave, not remain.

Mistigri · 05/10/2019 22:52

Here's a powerful video, made by a Leave campaigner, about why there must be no hard border.

"Ten of my friends were shot dead beside me".

MysteryTripAgain · 05/10/2019 22:58

@mistigri

Seen it before. Scary stuff.
