Saw the mad shellfish woman. She's bought a yellow sprayed turd from soneone who told her it was a gold brick. Can't admit she's been had.

DustyDiamond · 27/09/2019 10:20

BTW my 20 year old (currently studying at Oxford) and all his friends think Brexit is a crock

I just graduated this year - although there were many remainers, quite a few of the students in my course supported leaving (they didn't speak up in the seminars but spoke to me after I did - they didn't want to piss off the lecturers by disagreeing with them whereas I didn't give a shit)
Lecturers were vocally anti-brexit & were very forceful with the 'little-englander' narrative

A few of my fellow students actually voted to leave, but most just didn't bother to vote at all

When I did a politics degree my lecturers ranged from soft left to Trots who were bessie mates with Dave Nellist, and they all without exception admired conservative someauthors and encouraged us to read them, and despised others ("Booo," I still hear whenever I hear the name Patrick Minford, as my prof always followed it) and encouraged us to read them also.

jasjas1973 · 27/09/2019 11:22

My DDs at Uni, no talks politics in lectures, that's not what they are there for.

Perhaps those with medical conditions should have a look at the NAO report on medical stock piling and supplies to the UK.

The social care sector is particularly poorly prepared.

...and you still all want no-deal.

DustyDiamond · 27/09/2019 11:27

I take it you just have studied politics. I know academics in STEM

No, Psychology & Sociology

My background is in Engineering though

I think it's because Brexit is such a big deal tbh & I started it in 2016 so brexit was the topic of the moment.

It ties in with all sorts of stuff with Sociology & Psychology regardless though, so understandable that it was discussed.

I have a question and I'm really not sure where to ask it but believe that you vipers may be able to help me understand. I've not seen this anywhere.

Last Friday thousands of people attended marches and rallies for climate change. Some were addressed by Jeremy Corbyn telling them he was listening and agreed. Yesterday MPs voted on whether to allow a short break while the Conservative party conference takes place in Manchester. It was made clear in advance that the conference would continue, yet MPs including Jeremy Corbyn and ex Green Party leader Caroline Lucas voted to keep parliament open.
This would have been a fantastic opportunity to show they were putting their money where their mouths are when it comes to small changes to help prevent climate change and show that they really were listening to the climate protests. Instead they seem to have put their party politics first and belittled their own argument by ensuring that mps may have to make a number of unnecessary journeys.
Why is this not being talked about given the strength of feeling on climate change?

jasjas1973 · 27/09/2019 12:45

drummergirl

There is no controversial business planned next week or likely.

MockersthefeMANist · 27/09/2019 12:51

The planes and trains between London and Manchester will be travelling anyway, so extra emissions are negligable.

twofingerstoEverything · 27/09/2019 12:51

Why don't you start a thread about it then, drummergirl? When you do, perhaps you could make clearer what this has has to do with Corbyn and Lucas specifically and explain why you think sitting in parliament is 'unnecessary'. As it stands, your post just sounds like you want to take cheap shots at a couple of politicians that you've singled out, while ignoring the fact that the Tories' green record is atrocious (eg. they support fracking etc.)

DustyDiamond · 27/09/2019 13:07

Thank goodness the SNP are breaking now for GE.

Exactly as I said - VONC, install caretaker PM to get extension & straight to GE.

I don't want an extension personally, but it is the only way to clear out this shitty Parliament & start afresh.

DustyDiamond · 27/09/2019 13:09

Ironically this route could fail if Tories vote for confidence in themselves (as they'd likely do) & enough opposition MPs abstain 🙄😂

jasjas1973 · 27/09/2019 13:25

Thought only the opposition could call for a VNOC under the FTPA?

Might be wrong but if BJ is so keen on a GE (rather than grandstanding) then its the obvious course of action.

Still doesn't get us away from possibly another hung parliament, probably another year or two of arguing before yet another GE or a 2nd vote.

jasjas1973 · 27/09/2019 13:26

Surely, they would vote no confidence in themselves to ensure a GE ??? after all they would have called the VNOC.

DustyDiamond · 27/09/2019 13:29

Thought only the opposition could call for a VNOC under the FTPA?

Technically yes, but BJ explicitly said the other day that the govt would make time for any opposition party to bring VONC

DustyDiamond · 27/09/2019 13:32

Surely, they would vote no confidence in themselves to ensure a GE ??? after all they would have called the VNOC.

You'd think.

If I was them then I'd abstain at least...

But to vote no confidence in themselves is a farce even though it's what they want as only route now to GE

The whole thing is so utterly ridiculous now so normal expectations are out the window

DustyDiamond · 27/09/2019 13:37

I don't give a toss about Tories saving face or anything now (even though I want to see a Tory majority govt) - I just want this Parliament dissolved & replaced.

A hung Parliament is likely I think, but it will be a fresh start at least & hopefully more conducive to cooperation going forwards.

Perhaps just scrapping WA altogether & going for EEA/EFTA & time limited CU as a transition agreement whilst future relationship is negotiated.

And if hung Parliament then negotiating team should be cross party

DustyDiamond · 27/09/2019 13:41

Ideal scenario would be Labour tanking & then they can get rid of Corbyn.

A new labour leader is more likely to be open to cross party working I think & less toxic for other parties to team up with

howabout · 27/09/2019 13:41

The Nine (Scotland's news at 10) raised this with a Scottish Tory MP on Wednesday. He said to date Whips were not indicating that Tories would vote no confidence in themselves. If they were planning on doing this then the more straightforward route would just be for Boris to resign as PM.

So far the 21 ex-Tories are saying they would vote against VoNC. That means it would need absolutely everyone else to succeed.

To me this looks like Nicola very astutely working out how to cause maximum embarrassment for the LibDems. She is also using the positioning to further pressure Labour on Indyref2.

DustyDiamond · 27/09/2019 13:44

Agree Howabout

The Tories are beyond stupid if they vote confidence in themselves - at the very least they should abstain

If Tories abstained, do Labour & SNP have the numbers to succeed without Lib Dem cooperation?

howabout · 27/09/2019 13:45

Dusty if your ideal scenario involves a hung Parliament and Labour tanking then you are likely proposing a Conservative / LibDem majority. The only thing the LibDems would extract for this would be a 2nd Ref. Then it would be a reset to Osbornomics. Is that what you want?
